What's happening in the veggie patch?

Well, my fall tomatoes gave out in the middle of February so the new sets went in then. Here's what's happening in the interim.

And, last but not least, although taken a while back, is garden kitty ;-)

You are just too much Tom, can't believe how neat everything is. Wait until you see my "S&S" garden. You probably will not be able to stand it.

How are you tomato plants that you chopped to 12 inches doing ?

Nothing fancy! Yes that is a trellis for the green beans, I let the peas go up first , then there pretty much done in a month, the green beans will smother it.. Im growing.. 1. Shelling Peas "frosty" 2. Pole Green Beans Blue Lake and Kentucky Wonder 3. 3 types of cucumbers... 4. 2 types of zucchini Black Beauty and a yellow, which name escapes me.. 5. A miniture pumpkin for the kids "jack be little" 6. 4 packages of simpson lettuce , outrageous and another loose leaf I got in a trade, that isnt what they said, spinich, swiss chard 7. Tomatoes, Big Boy, Early Girl , Celebrity, a couple of Trudies wintersown eastern european imports (I cant remember thier name, I cant even pronouce them.. though I have it written down) 8. Northstar peppers 9. Cilantro and parsely.. I used to have a bigger garden in my old place and would try watermelons and some fancy stuff like tigger melon .. It would have to expand some more to try melons again...Ive also done alot of the fancy beans, like fortex etc.. but found that the expense of them, wasnt always worth the cost of them, vs having plain old green beans, which I like , taste similiar and heck of alot cheaper! I can't think why having it landscaped should affect the garden parts. Is it possible to contact the landscaper and ask for input as to what specifically was done? But it does sound as if a soil test is needed and they are available from your local county ag extension office for $10-15. You don't indicate your location or even your garden zone in your post (box provided for that info) or I would provide you a direct link to them. Not to mention having that info is important in answering any question. Your garden could easily have a build up of salts, low nitrogen, excess phosphorous, etc. and only a professional soil test will tell you that. It is very possible that the garden problems may only be coincidentally related to the landscaping. There have been increasing reports of herbicide contaminated compost and manures. So if those additives were brought in from the outside that is a real possibility. Plus since the landscaping was done have you been using a lawn service of any kind? If so them you need details on exactly what things they have been using in the area. Check with neighbors too as herbicide drift from as much as a 1/2 mile away can easily affect garden crops. Please don't a be guilty of 'entrapment' however. If there are lures for butterflies in your vegetable garden, you will have to be very careful not to poison them with any contact insecticides you might use on your vegetable plants. Some people think of 'butterfly gardens' as only where the butterflies come to visit the flowers, but it's also going to be where they lay their eggs. I had a customer who wanted me to assemble all the plants needed for a butterfly garden and I got a call from her later in the season saying her plants were full of 'worms' and she wanted to know how she could kill them. After she described them to me, I informed her they were caterpillars from the butterflies and she should leave them alone. It never dawned on her that would be the natural course of events.

Defrost, I am in zone 5 and wintersowed all of my tomatoes this year. ... and I had plenty of ripe tomatoes by August: Here is a summary of the schedule I followed this year. (Your results may very) Beans - direct sown in June Broccoli/Cauliflower - wintersown in February Carrots - direct sown in April Cucumbers - direct sown in May Lettuces/Spinach/Chard - wintersown in January, 2nd batch sown in late June for fall harvest Peas - wintersown in March Peppers - the only thing I sow indoors (March) Radishes - direct sown in April Tomatoes - wintersown in March, planted out late May Herbs, perennial or hardy annuals - wintersow whenever, usually February because I have the time. That is some amazing garden set up. Make sure you are taking pictures of the harvest.
Next, rain barrels...I am going to be waiting for this, since I want some of my own. :o)

You were right on the Butterstick, that is the one that has some little zucchini already.
On the tomato diaries, the one that is doing the worst is the Indian Stripe. Even tough was the first one to set fruit. We will see how it performs later in the season.

I am growing Okra; Baby Bubba and Sweet Lucy. I have them in 3 gallon containers. I hope is enough space, otherwise I will put it in bigger pots.

What a beautiful garden, I can only aspire to that some time in the far, far distant future. In the mean time, I am only eating leafy greens. The icicles are long done, I've been waiting for a couple to bolt so I could harvest seeds. All of the 'mater seeds you sent me sprouted, but they're still too small to produce any fruit. I hope I didn't wait too long. My wild mustard has bolted and is attracting lots of bees, which is great.

I'm still waiting for the cauliflower to do something. Lots of leaves, no flower...

Tom, as always, your setup is so cool. Your sugar snaps are incredible! You gotta be getting a great harvest from those already, no? I always look forward to your pics. Thanks!

Hi folks, I posted this message just before hitting the road. We went to the Leu Gardens sale Sunday, fairly picked over :-( We did buy a cool orchid, a {{gwi:816792}}, fluorescent veins in the leaves; no real flower to speak of. Also, in the garden I saw a really cool mulberry tree called a dwarf weeping mulberry, when cut back the branches grow downward with a curved symmetry like a weeping willow, great for those of us with limited space, anyone head of it or know anything about it?

I'm picking a quart of Super Sugar snaps every other day, tried to post a picture via Photobucket but the site has been very problematic tonight...they're adding way too many high-graphic adds.... time to look for another photo hosting site.

How do you keep the powdery mildew away from the cukes. I have never been sucessful even though I tried several times. It seems I would have to spay it maybe every other day to keep the disease away. I tried lemon cucumbers recently - a few cukes then the plants all died. They did look horrible all the time anyway.

that mulberry is an interesting shape. I am considering a mulberry tree but want to taste whatever variety before planting since I have room for ONE tree-size object and it must be very worthy.

Neves Azorean Red won my personal contest of biggest tomato.
It is de-licious, resistant to whitefly and nematodes...or I just got lucky this time. I've been fooled by tomatoes before :-)

I've been giving plants away and just got a call from one of the charity people who was peeved that the plants got scarfed up when she wasn't in the office so she's picking some up. Volunteers deserve perks too :-)

P.S. Later when I can make a list I'll post all the tomatoes tried from fall season and rate them. YMMV.
I have many baby fruits on winter tomatoes (or should I call them spring now?) Black from Tula, Omars Lebanese, Galina cherry, Black Brandywine, Snow White (a LOT like Dr. Carolyn), Amish Yellow, Carol Chyko's Paste.

Your gardens are such inspirations! Absolutely beautiful and productive too. You can't ask for much more than that.

Tom, the jewel orchid is amazing - I've never seen one like it. See? I knew I would be sorry that I missed Leu's sale this year.
