Is the area full shade? How moist is the soil?

If it is a moist area a Forest Grass (Hakonechloa) would be good since it doesn't bloom. There are many kinds available now. My 'Aureola' has golden variegated foliage. 'Beni Kaze' had red-streaked green foliage. There are some white streaked ones.

Polygonatum (Soloman's Seal) is nice for dry shade. Perennial Geraniums, which come in all shapes and sizes, are winners. I don't know if they would trigger allergies or not though...

It's heavy shade, I think. It's not boggy moist but it's never arid. The mulch on it always stays deep brown in color.

I was thinking it should be something low-growing, so it doesn't block the view of the window. Evergreen would be nice since the rest of the bed is lacking in winter interest.

Does Hakonechloa stay through winter for you?

Hakonechloa does come back perennially in my zone, but it is not evergreen. At full maturity (takes some time for this to get big) it is three feet wide and a little less in height.

Hummm...I am trying to think of things that will not annoy allergies. Will most any blooming thing be bothersome? Only certain things? I never knew fern spores could cause it.

Are you opposed to a groundcover? Gaultheria procumbens, Wintergreen, is nice. It is a wintergreen, used by the Native Americans for tea. It stays evergreen a has red berries in winter (unless the birds eat them). They have tiny bell flowers in spring, but I don't think they produce a lot of pollen.
Geranium macrorrhizum is semi-evergreen here, but it has flowers in spring. Is only a little over a foot tall but forms a nice large mat over the years.
Bergenia is evergreen. Lovely foliage, but it does flower. Only a foot tall when not in bloom.

Let us know how those sound. I am sure we can find something nice for that spot!

Don't want to be a pest, but I just wanted to add that the Wintergreen can sometimes be a slow grower, so it is not a bad idea to plant more than one. I wish I had boughten more, I really love mine.

I have just the common pink-flowered Bergenia, but there are white flowering ones to. They have some really interesting new cultivars out too. 'Bressingham Ruby' has maroon colored foliage in fall and spring, when they bloom. 'Lunar Glow' has golden tinged foliage in spring.

Actually, I think I have wintergreen seeds someone sent me that I will try to wintersow this year. I'd almost forgot about them. If you collect the seeds from your wintergreen you could try that too?

It might be a race against the birds. They seem to like the fruit as well. Oh well, one has to share with the wildlife. ;-)

Here I would plant astilbe. Mounded foliage that looks good even when the short to tall stalks (depending on hybrid) are not bearing their huge feathery plumes of white, lav or pink.
