Ornamental Grass ID

Could anyone identify this ornamental grass for me? I got it at a flea market last year and the tag has gone missing. It has grown to be a huge (but very tidy) clump and I need to move it. Can this be divided or is it better off left as the original clump. My cat loves this plant - I frequently see him grazing on the lush green grass center.

I would guess a variety of Deschampsia cespitosa. You can move/divide in spring right after you see new growth starting up.

Thank-you pudge - I googled some pics and it looks like you're right. I'm not experienced with grasses and was wondering if it would survive a move at this time of year? We are in reno mode and it would be more convenient. I could live with a growth set back but if it meant probable death I would wait.

It looks like a Pennisetum. They can be weedy. Some varieties are on invasive lists. I don't know whether your plant is the one linked below. Here is a link that might be useful: Pennisetum

I really like grasses that are blue, variegated, or have a color to them. To me, ornamental grass that has plain green foliage can look a bit weedy before it puts off plumes. Unless it is very large of couse, so it can't be mistaken for crab grass, lol. How tall did you want the grass to be? And how wide? My garden is on the small side, so no big grasses for me :-( A favorite grass of mine is Helictotrichon sempervirens, Blue Oat Grass. And also Calamagrostis 'Overdam'. It's a miscanthus sinensis, but can't be sure what variety. Flowering that's kind of high above foliage, could be Malepartus, Graziella or several others. Blades look a bit wide to be Graziella. Definite midrib. Hard to say for sure. What month were these photos taken last year? Did you lose a plant due to cold this winter?

It's a cool season grass, Susan, best moved when it's putting on growth in spring so they say. I suspect it's either already in or approaching dormancy and it won't get busy putting out roots if moved now. I've never moved an OG in fall so I can't say one way or the other if it'll survive, but if you really don't want to lose it, then I'd wait. On the other hand, if you can get the entire root ball with lots of soil so that it doesn't disturb the root system at all, then perhaps it'll be okay to move, but maybe wait until spring to divide it.

Thanks for the great info pudge. I think I will do as you suggested and move it as one large clump and consider dividing in the spring. I am moving it to a more open space where it might not look as large as it does in the cramped space it currently occupies and I may not want to divide it after all.
