Late sept zone 6/7 - do I plant in yard or bring indoors?

Just bought a good looking brown turkey fig from a pretty reputable nursery. one single trunk, about 5 -6 feet with only about 8 leaves total, thick fleshy stems, and about six unripe but healthy looking figs on trunk, basically. In a pot that seems way to small - like 1-2 gallon. we have very hot summers for a while, and it's considered between zones 6 and 7 depending which map you consult. Cashmere WA - a microclimate with lush orchards. My soil is clayish, dry, rocky where un-amended. So IF I plant in yard, I would need to dig a pretty big hole and fill with lighter, permeable, soil right? But this can make a bathtub effect where water stands in the hole... Our first freeze is probably only 2-3 weeks off. Better survival chance to repot now to a BIG pot and bring inside for winter, or plant in yard NOW so it can get the hard freeze, go dormant, acclimate if it survives? I have a full morning sun spot in a semi protected space for it.
