Seedling Surprises (photos)

I've only had a few seedlings bloom so far. These are the survivors from the fiasco from two years ago when the feral dog kept digging up my seedling bed. This is their first season of bloom. None of them are what I would consider keepers, but they are helping me learn about hybridizing.

#1 is Strawberry Candy X Decatur Cherry Smash, 4-way branching, 13 buds, dormant. This one's orange color suprised me. I was expecting a pink or red with an eye.

Garden named Punkin Eye

#2 is My Darling Clementine X Exotic Candy, 3-way branching, 12 buds, dormant. My goal was to get a soft yellow with a rose eye in a round, ruffled form. Instead I got a pink with a darker pink halo and slight ruffling. I was surprised by the true pink color since Exotic Candy is peachy. I was also suprised by how tall this dame is - scapes are 29-30 inches tall.

Garden named Long Tall Pinky

#3 Royal Heiress X Great White, 3-way branching with the possibility of 5-way in the future, had 8 buds but dropped 5, evergreeen. I was not expecting this freaky babe. Where did that eye come from? And what about those long, funky sepals? This one did have a humongous fan - gigantic compared with the rest of my seedlings.

I won't even subject you to the one garden named Poop Eye.

I love your seedlings.. they are all so bright and cheery.. and especially the pink one.. I am currently in a pink phase so I will be happy to give that baby a home. My EXOTIC CANDY is more pink than peach though.
Freaky Babe may be having flash backs from the dog digging.. ready to take flight with her stepal propeller!
I have had a seedling bloom from two dark eyed/edged parents with NO sign of an eye...or an edge..I even looked back in the parentage to see how far the eye went.. several generations.. but Mother Nature has her own ideas.
They are all lovely

All keepers, Jan! Congrats on the great crosses. I'm in the process of watching many of my seedlings start to bloom from one and two years ago when I first set the babies in the garden. I lost a lot of the parent names, because the "permanent" ink was NOT permanent. I learned my lesson, and from now on will use a China marker, or a more permanent sticky Brother label. Great photos! Vladimir,...I would be happy to..I would even meet you some where and just hand you one. It would probably be easier to hand you one that to ship it. If I ship it, the top would have to be lopped off, but if I hand you a pup, it would be without being cut at all. Thanks too for your care... Steven thanks for your kind comments ))) Jersey, thank a million...I am one that hates taking pain meds...But if feels much better without any of them and for that I am excited..I am too young not to put in an implant in..It should be fun. What fun! That's part of the pleasure, I think, the unexpected. I've seen my share...lol! Very creative names...I'm with Chris....with a name like that, we've got to see it!

I was very excited about a cross I purchased Victorian Lace x Gary Colby. I am very unexcited about the seedlings...however (and after waiting so long!)...of those that have bloomed, they have all been nearly identical peachy things, nothing remotely exceptional. Go figure.

Thanks for sharing yours...we can all learn! Like your names!

Debra, I like long tall pinky but I really wast to see POOP EYE. Can't be worse than Doodie Pants. After all, DP is an award winner...Hehehe!! I think they show potential. Give em' time my girl...Ellie

Sorry gang, I didn't photograph Poop Eye. It was just too brown and ugly. After the third bloom, I composted it.

.....they are helping me learn about hybridizing.

And I am learning from all of you, who share your details of seedling characteristics. I've kept good records of parents, but never thought to record branching, #of buds, or scape height...or even to assign a "garden name!"

BTW, to determine bud count, do you add up the buds, seed pods, and bloom scars per scape?

I only have a very few seedlings setting buds this year, but I am indeed getting excited!
