Vegetable Garden Status - The Harvest Begins

The temperature is heading down to +3 tonight, so it's time for the harvest to begin.

I just picked all of my tomatoes. The Beefsteaks were awful. Most of them split or were misshapen, and were going rotten as they ripened. The Early Cascades were very good, though. I think grasshoppers have been chewing on tomatoes, because many had little holes in them.

Last weekend i picked and froze the rest of the beans. They were excellent this year.

As mentioned before, i got one - count it! - cucumber, but there's another one on one plant so that and a zucchini that's still producing will get covered tonight. Amazingly enough, we got maybe about 6 zucchini this year! LOL Better than 60, i guess!

Dh has been digging a few of his potatoes at a time, just for meals. We'll need to get the onions out soon, but after tonight, the night temps will be okay for another week, so maybe next weekend.

The deer have managed to overcome their fear of the orange snowfencing and had gone in to harvest the swiss chard for me. Oh, too bad.... I like it fresh, but i'm sure i've told everyone how much i hate to have to can the stuff (which is how Dh likes it).

Carrots and beets are still in the ground and there are a couple of cabbages that i'll pick at some point this week so that i can make some cabbage soup. Our leeks look great but i don't know when to harvest them - pretty sure i read that they can take frost. Kale can as well, so our daughter can pick at her leisure - she doesn't have her own garden, and i'd like to remedy that! LOL

Dh picked several ears of corn this week. It's not coming that well - i guess the month of fall we had this summer didn't help! I forgot about it - will have to go and pick the rest now.

I could kick myself right now. Forecast last night was +4, so I thought things would be okay. Nope, it FROSTED this morning! I lost most of the remaining tomatoes and zucchini. The peppers, eggplants and others were partially damaged. I think the surviving plants will still produce if we get more warm weather, so I'm going to keep them covered from now on until at least early October.

^Where are you? I'm in the same zone (in Saskatoon), and there isn't any sign we had frost.

I've been picking my regular tomatoes as they blush rather than when they are fully ripe. This might be a good idea if you have critter/disease issues with tomatoes ripening on the vine. The cherry tomatoes are copious and I've given a lot away. I must remember to only plant one or two next year, but how do I decide which varieties? Hmmm. I guess if I had to choose, it would be Sunsugar and Isis Candy. Those ones had the most flavour; the IC were in good shape long after picking.

My beans are having a second flush, although not as heavily as the first. Grew a few yardlong beans this year and I don't think I'll do that again. The cukes are still producing - Sweet Slice being the best of the bunch. My beets are very good. Carrots and potatoes were just so-so, had a crop but certainly nothing spectacular.

I usually have great peppers in the garden, but this year they were too shaded by other stuff. They haven't produced much. I have some in pots on the deck, including a Thai chili pepper that I grew from a grocery store pepper. These are doing better than the ones in the garden. Even when green, those suckers pack heat! My husband discovered this the hard way as he was sampling peppers for me when I made salsa last week. He bit a tiny corner of this pepper and needed a cup of yogurt to sooth the burn. Said he wasn't going near those for a while, lol.

Many of our medical people have not yet accepted that exposure to many of the poisons sprayed on land that is "conventionally" farmed can cause chronic health problems even though they recognize they can cause acute health problems. Exposure to more then one could cause a symbiotic relationship that is not healthy. That some people are more susceptible to adverse reactions to these poisons is also a known and if that person is exposed to more than one of these potential allergins can cause even larger problems. Unfortunately the only way to find put if a person is suscetible to any substance is to expose them to that substance. While an allergist can, and will, test someone for these types of allergies it will only be done if there is good reason to suspect there is a need. So alaria121 if you are still able to please update us on what, if anything has been found.

- Just pick the first batch of peas and ended up with just over 10 lbs shucked. There was more to be picked but the bowls were full!! - Sugar Snap peas are almost done (thank goodness) - Yellow Bush Beans are ready to be picked - Carrots are maturing nicely and are being attacked by grasshoppers - beets vary in size but some could be picked and roasted... yumm! - kale is HUGE (and no cabbage worms ... yet), kohlrabi is almost big enough to pick, and turnips are a nice size - swiss chard has been ready for a while - onions & garlic are HUGE this year - cauliflower has nice size heads, ready to pick soon before cabbage worms get too bad - lots of green tomatoes but nothing ripening get - some zucchini and papaya pear are ready for harvesting - spaghetti squash is behind even though they are monster plants this year! my largest is about the size of a baseball (hard ball not soft ball), last year they were almost full size but green in the beginning of august - tators - Norland harvestable and plants healthy, Yukon Gold harvestable and plants starting to die back - should be able to pick my first greenhouse cucumber within the week :) - Sunflowers starting to open .... and I'm so glad I can start harvesting (& blanching) because that means I have no time for weeding!!! :)

Winter sowing is planting seeds hat can survive very cold weather, and then get an early start once temps rise above freezing. Dill is a good example, as if its winter sowed, or planted right now, the seeds are quite dorment until the soil warms above 50 degrees or so. Getting an ealy start will give earlier maturity. Dill is one plant that does not transplant very well, so a winter or early spring sowing is OK. Not all seeds can survive a freezing cold winter. I have seen tomatoes sprout plants in spring, because some seeds were in soil from the previous year. Survival if the fittest comes into play to, so not all seeds will sprout. Even though the tomatoes had a few on the plants by September, they were hardly full size and froze before they could mature, so starting indoors for tomatoes and peppers is much more preferred. Your potatoes foliage may have died from frost, but if the roots were not badly affected, you may still get now sprouts to emerge. Maybe its a good idea to figure out what you wamt to grow and then make a monthy schedule to tell you when something is to be planted and which are fall crops and which are spring crops. Here, most everything is fine all hrough our summer. I grew peas and many lettuce types, and even broccoli (cool weather crops) even though it was hot in July and August. After the main heads were cut off in early July, my broccoli was producing small heads all they way to September. Shade helps a lot in mide summer, as does some plastic fabric mulch to help hold moisture in the soil and block out weeds. My potatoes grew just fine and were planted in June, and harvested in September.

Hazel, how exciting to hear about your plants! It's a fun and rewarding time of year, isn't it? I have decided not to worry so much about doing every little thing just so, Dawn is right, plants know what to do. SO. . . when did you plant your beans? You planted them from seed? What kind of beans did you plant? I have not planted mine yet but I'm thinking I need to get on the ball and do it. My habit has been to plant later rather than earlier and I think this year I want to go ahead and get my seeds in the ground. It's been a warm and extremely dry season so far. I'm sure the colder temps are behind us. I just want RAIN!! My carrots and beets are still very small but at least they have a start. Everything I started indoors, under the grow light I made, I have been very disappointed with. (I'll do my homework for next year) I started my squash and cukes too early and I'm just going to plant seeds next week. My tomatoes are just pitiful. I think I'll keep trying and transplant next month and have a back up plan with plants from a nursery. Here in Enid, my selection is a joke, BUT actually last year I bought a cherry tomato plant, variety unknown, that just did marvelous and produced till the frost did it's number on it. My peas that I planted from seeds look great, about 3" tall now. Oh how I hope I get a good crop, I do love my peas! My asparagus is doing superb, almost all of the 18 or so plants have sprouted and are now covered with soil and hay. Dawn, you have so much experience and give great advice, so here is a question for you. What kind of Espoma do you use? I had no idea there were so many to choose from! I also have been adding organic material to my soil for the past couple of years and it's looking good, I would like to simplify things and get a basic fertilizer, if that is what can be done. I have had the OSU extension center do soil sample tests on different parts of my garden for a couple of years and my pH is good, just needs a bit of potassium and phosphorus, which I have added. Hi Donna, my garden is located just outside the city. It gets really frigid there at night.

There was also a frost in my garden on June 2 (a very light one that just singed a few leaves) but Saskatoon's last frost was on May 11th.

I should have seen it coming but I got too complacent.
