Cone Question

Recently, while giving a Conifer PowerPoint to a Garden Club, a question arose concerning cones. I was showing photos of colorful male and female spring cones and explaining conifers being air(wind)pollinated. The question was: "If not pollinated by insects or animals, why bother to be brightly colored?" I thought it might have to do with wavelength of light for maturation of ovaries or pollen. Any ideas? Thanks. Jay
