McFaydens order arrived today...should I plant my tulips?

I received my McFayden's order today with a few lilies and irises but mostly tulips and small bulbs. We are having a really warm fall here and I am wondering if I should wait till October to plant these bulbs. Any thoughts?

Yes, we are planting bulbs now,
so they have good root systems before freeze up.

I do find the selection at van englen great! I am going to try out several smaller daffodils this year as the foliage of some if my bulbs is just now dying down. I am hoping to find varieties that have less noticeable dying leaves through the summer. Last fall was my first with costco bulbs and all went well. Those bags just find a way into my cart...I try to be sure I actually count the total number of bulbs I am buying as a reality check! Last spring I tried some spring bulbs but they were dried up in the bag. Costco has always been good about returns though. Not sure how they'd deal with the wrong fall bulbs though...hmm. When I have had wrong items from van engelen, they have sent replacements, resulting in now hundreds of odd ball daffodils in my woods. I kind of wish now I had just received a refund.

"Believe me, I have planned trips to pass by certain stores that I have wanted to visit in the past. I think however with Donahues I will settle for ordering the quart sized plants and growing them out myself." Hey, Miguel, a visit to MN in the early summer/mid summer is great, warm temps during the days, cooling off in the evenings. After living in St. Louis for 8 years I moved back to MN and was frequently heard to say "What a beautiful evening" that first year back. We also have a wonderful arboretum here. So, come on up! I miss the early springs of St. Louis as it doesn't really get springy and beautiful in MN until May. But, oh, those cool summer nights almost make up for the late spring. I visted Donahues last April during their spring open house and bought several gallon pots of clematis. Have also ordered from them via mail with good results. Bobbie

Received my Cedar Hollow order of three roses on Friday. They were polestar, Dr. Merckley and what was supposed to be lambert Closse but instead was polareis. I must say that the customer service at Cedar Hollow is wonderful because I was not going to worry about it but was contacted by Cedar Hollow and asked if the right rose was sent out and if not they would send it out at no charge. Now I have to find a spot for lambert closse as I put the polareis in the spot that I had for it.

Today was a perfect day for planting, and I AM FINISHED!!!! I don't know what the temperature was, but it took about 5 minutes to trade the jeans and sweatshirt for shorts and a tee. After digging, I even went barefoot! Today I really appreciated the last owner of our property, whcih only goes back to the 1960's. Bless his heart, he had a nursery here, and the digging in the yard (around the stump of an old crabapple that we cut down several years ago) was so easy. The shovel would go all the way in in one step. I found an old iron block and tackle, and an old sledge hammer head buried right next to the stump. Maybe tomorrow I'll go dig for the metal box with the gold coins in it....... Barbara, looking forward to a great night's sleep....

Which irises did you get from McFaydens?

I called today to find out when I could pick mine up, and they said that all the irises were back ordered and none had come in yet from the supplier. hmmm....

I would plant the irises in pots and grow them in the house for the winter, as it is too late for them to get good root systems now in the garden. They need an established root system in order to make it thru our winter. Once they confirm that my irises are in, I will pick them up and plant them in pots...

Brenda ~ I always plant late arriving irses in pots and overwinter in the house. This year I have MANY! I also got the 2 collections from Botanus and 4 from Vesey's. I usually purchase my irses from Trail's End or Chuck and have many from both of them that arrived in August.

Ann just sent me 5 I was looking for as a gift for the puppy they adopted from my pack, I'm assuming....;). I much prefer fresh dug early to shriveled up late. =:>

My main concern was the warm weather and the tulips. We are having a very late summer here. :/

I was interested in three of these irises as I attended the American Iris Society National Convention and saw Keith Keppel, Barry Blyth and Paul Black getting various awards for the irises that they have hybridized. Raven Girl is sooooo dark I just 'had' to have it!!

I ordered mine on August 8. Maybe you ordered before I did?

Definitely get those tulips in the ground, the sooner the better! Think about established tulips -- the tops die down in June and July, then by the end of July they are just bulbs so it's like you've just planted bulbs at the end of July. Hot weather won't hurt them at all, it's important to get them in the ground and setting roots for spring.

The long range forecast calls for a very cold November and December. Don't be deceived by the warm weather we're having now - all it takes is a shift of the jet stream, which is indeed forecast to happen around Halloween, to plunge us into the 'wrong' side of it. I would plant them now.

I'll be planting those bulbs this weekend for sure. I didn't get too many for the front gardens but wanted a little color in the spring. :)
