Saturday Show at Shive's

All of a sudden there are about 100 daylilies open here. How did it happen so quickly? Since there was a heat index of 100 forecast for this aftenoon, I got up very early to photograph and water the gardens. Here's some of what I found.

ARCTIC LACE is having multple blooms every day. Here are four of the 7 blooms from today. There's a rebloom scape starting on it!

I REMEMBER YOU holds the title of bud king here - so far. It slightly beat out Arctic Lace with 34 buds per scape.

CRAZY IVAN is well-budded and branched, too.

GRAPE TWIZZLER made all the other flowers fade away when I saw it in the UF bed.

The EDGE OF YOUR SEAT clump demanded closer attention, too.

ICE CREAM EMPEROR - Seeing this one in the heat and humidity made me crave vanilla ice cream.

SPIRITUAL CORRIDOR never fails to disappoint.

MOZAMBIQUE NIGHTS looking darker than in past years.

Great blooms at your place on Saturday! I truely could pick so many as the favorite as they all so great but can not narrow it down to just one. My favorites include I REMEMBER YOU and EDGE OF YOUR SEAT. The edge and form on EDGE OF YOUR SEAT are just fantatic.

Since every one of them is beautiful I'll choose the two with the most buds as my favorites--ARCTIC LACE and I REMEMBER YOU. Just one question though--what about SPRITUAL CORRIDOR disappoints you? It looks beautiful to me.

Carol, yes, we went to the north shore of Mono. There is a long boardwalk down to a beach area and viewing platform (I visited the other shores last fall where there are a lot more tufas). Just as we were approaching the beach and viewing area, hundreds of shorebirds exploded into the air like nothing I've ever seen. I copied it down last year... made it last year too. Very delish! Pecan Pie Bars - originally posted by Georgysmom: 3 C. A. P. flour, 2 C. sugar, divided, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1 C. (2 sticks unsalted butter + 3 T., 5 eggs lightly beaten, 1 1/2 C. light or dark corn syrup, 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla, 3 C. chopped pecans. Preheat oven 350. Grease bottom and sides 12 x 18" pan and line with parchment paper. (Do not grease parchment paper) In large bowl, combine flour, 1/2 C. sugar and salt. With pastry blender, cut in 1 C. butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press firmly and evenly in pan. Bake 15 - 20 min. In a large bowl, mix together eggs, corn syrup, 1 1/2 C. sugar, 3 T. melted butter and vanilla. Stir in pecans. Spread over hot crust and bake 25 - 27 min. or until set. Cool completely and cut into bars. (I use a combination of half dark and half light corn syrup.) I cut them in smallish bars because they are rich....you can always go back for seconds. Wow, wow, wow! They are all just perfect. Really like MOZAMBIQUE NIGHTS, Edge of your seat & I remember you. Just beautiful pictures. If I remember you has that great a bud count, guess I better add that one to my impossibly long wish list.

Rita - Edge of Your Seat is a fantastic daylily, and it's northern bred. You might want to try that one. I've been very pleased with the four Rick Yost intros I have.

Val and Sue - Spiritual Corridor is another northern-bred daylily that has stood the test of time. With all that rain we got in May, it has never had so many buds or looked so pretty. Val, I think you will love it. That's the one that started me on my Curt Hanson collection.

Nancy VB - Grape Twizzler was a bonus from the hybridizer, Terah George of JTM Daylilies. If you like UFs, she has introduced some excellent ones. Eye On A String is outstanding, and I also have Raspberry Twizzler.

I only tried my first Yost intro lately. That would be HERBGIRLS CHERRY MOONSHINE, which I only planted last fall. Edge of Your Seat looks even better in your picture than it does on his website. And I just looked, it is listed as a rebloomer. I will have to think about that one. I truely really, really like it.

OMG, love that screaming green throat on Grape Twizzler. Your bud counts are fabulous, as are all of the blooms.

Beautiful group -- Mozambique Nights is quite a looker.

Glad to see Arctic Lace finally bloomed for you. I guess it's making up for lost time this year.

these are just gorgeous pictures. I love them all! Arctic Lace is always picture perfect. Crazy Ivan is just an all-around performer, one of the best that I've seen from Frank Smith. Now, I've got to add Edge of Your Seat in the list.

Rita - I bet we both got Herbgirls Cherry Moonshine from Judy Davidson as bonuses last fall. I can't wait to see what that one looks like in person. Edge Of Your Seat is an instant rebloomer. I already have rebloom scapes coming on it. Yippee!

Chris - Arctic Lace does seem to be making up for lost time. Today is another 7-bloom day. I can't take photos of the the whole clump because hybridizing tags would marr the image. It's a wonderful pod parent and the pollen is potent! It's too bad our temps have gone into the mid-90s. Little or no seed will set now.

How beautiful! I love so many of these, I don't think I'll be able to pick a favorite out of this bunch, let's see...Edge of Your seat, or Arctic Lace or I Remember You. No maybe Mozambique Nights. Or Crazy Ivan? I give up. Too many I really like, but I did enjoy this posting, and maybe it won't cost me too much money with "gotta-have-itis".
