Whiskers, It would help if we knew where you were located. The early figs may have been the breba crop which just means figs that grew on last years growth. The current figs which are on the new growth are just too late. The fact it is colder now and as you said the plant has few leaves is why the new crop is not ripening. The breba crop which is probably smaller in number? You can remove those figs next spring as they form and that will speed up the main crop.

I used to be under the impression that mushroom compost had to be excellent, sort of like the manure based composts I had made and used for 25 years in my greenhouse and nursery work. I am not a chemist and do not do soil sampling anymore. I do know what salts are and how high EC levels are damaging to plants When I used up to 1/4 of spent mushroom compost in my potting mix, plants did poorly and salts appeared. In addition our county agent in the local paper described the spent mushroom compost locally available as having high levels of potassium salts...he does have access to high quality soil analyses. Maybe they're using lots of potassium nitrate to feed the mushrooms...I don't know about that. Go ahead and punch holes in the bags if you like. I haul my soil amendments in the pick-up and do the best I can with local available ingredients...minus the peat moss and perlite I can't seem to replace.

You can wait or do it now. Your only worry is making sure their is enough roots that it comes out whole as not to disturb the growth of the plant. Ripping roots is not too big of a deal as long as it is not too much. If it does not come out whole or seems a bit hard to pull out, I would wait until dormant. There is no harm in waiting.

Ditto Yeehova ....get the rooted cuttings into at least a 1 gallon container filled with a quick draining mix. Give them partial shade, i.e morning sun and afternoon shade. The sun can and will heat up the containers, and cause the figs to be heat-stressed, especially when they have a juvenile root system. Err on the side of bright light for a few weeks until the figs get used to full sun. Keep the growing mix moist....better yet, partially bury the containers halfway into garden soil and mulch up the sides of the containers to conserve moisture and cut back the heat reaching the root zone. Think: cool bottoms and sunny tops. Water with very diluted fertilizers. Definitely bring the young trees into a cool garage after they go dormant. If they really put on growth this year, think about up-potting into 5 gallon buckets (with drainage holes) next season. This site and the "Figs4Fun" Forum have plenty of information posted about the culture of containerized figs. The learning curve is short. Doing some research homework is half the fun.
