These plants did not have a "clumping" habit. There was maybe 6 or so of the same kind of plants in the area but they were spread out with only 2 leaves per plant, all of which were basal. The leaf stalks were quite stiff and the underside of the leaves had pronounced veins. The leaves were not as fleshy or as glossy as marsh marigolds are. This plant puzzled the entire group I was with including the group leader - and he and I have found and pointed out marsh marigold on medicinal herb identification walks in other locations. I wish I had gotten some more pix but it was rather difficult to get these. I really didn't want to sink into the bog and becomes NY's equivalent of the Tollund Man! ;) Thanks for all the assistance and suggestions thus far! FataMorgana

I've never read anything about testing for chlorine resistance. Chlorine is more like fire than poison to plants, so it would depend on many things. There would be a lot in gravel for chlorine to react with and once it reacts it's gone. Unlike something like copper which kills a cell and then the copper is released to go kill another cell. People put chlorinated water on plants all the time, but of course pools can have a much higher level. But it's the same type of deal, can a plant heal from the damage. So fast growers would always have a better chance imo. A bigger and older plant would have a better chance imo. But that also means lots of roots. More roots mean the plant could lose a bunch of roots to chlorine and still recover. I wouldn't worry too much. My guess is any plant would do fine. Easy enough to try some.

Creeping Jenny, is a good candidate for you, it is not invasive, the roots are very slight and easy to pull if you don't want it there. It does well in sun or shade and is very pretty, you could also use sweet woodruff, it is a nice evergreen and blooms with a sweet white flower in the spring. It is a good ground cover that is not invasive and does better with some shade but will tolerate sun too.

I'm currently finishing up creating a bog to lead to my pond. If anyone is needing to divide or would like to send plants in exchange for postage, please email me. I currently need any marginals, but would be happy with just about anything, since about the only pond plants around here that you can buy are water lettuce, hyacinths, iris and lilies. I do have a few extra hyacinths that I could trade, but they are small. I might be able to do duckweed too, if you are in an area that it is legal (depending on how much my fish eat that is).
