The size of mature fig tree is remarkably constant for all varieties. This means that a height of 30 'wide and 35' is normal for a fig tree, single, on deep ground, rich and soft. I also thought that trees of varieties that in my country are almost never in the orchard, and cultivated or left fallow were dwarfs, but when I saw the size (of the same variety), in rich deep soil and no competitors, were monumental as the others. So is the plot that matters so much, but worked in poor soil without over-watering, fig trees can occupy a diameter of 15, 'and a height not exceeding 10', though very poor, stony soil, less . redhairing... I understand how daunting pruning an overgrown fig tree can be. But, you are in luck. There have been a number of recent threads that cover this very topic. Search this forum, and you will see plenty of photos of hard-pruned fig trees. Also, You-Tube has some pruning videos. You will need a good, tree-pruning saw to establish the basic structure of the tree. I would not be too worried about "murdering" this fig tree, as they do with crepe myrtles. But you will have to decide where to make those initial pruning cuts to prevent this. You already know the basics of pruning. If you can, post some photos of the tree, and maybe forum members will suggest places for the pruning cuts. You have plenty of time. Major pruning should be done in the Spring, before tree breaks dormancy. You will also want to do this, gradually, over a number of years. Even if you screw up...and I am sure you will not...the tree will put out so much new wood that you will never know within a few seasons. Figs are one of the few trees that can be drastically pruned back, with few worries. It's done all the time to control rampant growth. Good luck. Frank

My Celeste figs (about 50 fruits) have not grown much (if any) in the last 6 weeks. The weather has been ok and watering is ok. My tree is 4yrs old and in the ground and open for sun. I was thinking it was due planting the tree in the shade, but now I see that this is popping up all over the place with Celeste even in full sun. : ( This morning I noticed one fig turning yellow. I didn't get breba this year, so this is the main crop. One could only hope that they will eventually ripen!

I only have edible figs, but I see you have advised people with houseplant figs over and over that this forum is for edible figs. I started looking for where it says that, and don't see anything unless it's the word ficus. Up at the top where it says "This forum is for the discussion of figs, those plants of the genus Ficus." You might add edible in front of the word figs.
