Does Anyone Buy Fall Mums ?

I walked past a ton of Fall Mums at the store the other day and was tempted to buy some. I'd like to lengthen my flowering season because it started so late.

I have no intention of trying to keep them over the winter. Are they going to get a lot of aphids? Is that maybe why I haven't bought them before? I can't remember my reasoning from last year.....

I have bought mums in the past three years and found them to be reliable perennials so far. Never an issue with any bugs and never have I fussed over them. I have yellow, pink, white, orange and burgundy ones. They seem to be doing pretty good so far this year as well.

I used to stay away from mums. I always considered them to be 'funeral flowers'. Everytime you went to a funeral you saw lots of mums. When I started gardening, I started buying them because they give a gorgeous splash of color to the fall bed. Like honalee, I have had them come back reliably every year and never seen bugs on them. We just got our usual pack of flyers and I saw that the garden center has them on sale for $3. Time to buy some more. Marg

Hi Judith, I think the best selection of Hollyhocks is going to come right from the wonderful traders here on GW. I've received many varieties through trades. If you post that you are looking for a wide array over on the Seed Exchange, I'm sure you'll get lots of offers. About the mum, I found it listed at Niche Gardens. I wanted some gaudy (I do mean hot colors) cannas and didn't want to spend $10-20 each, so I picked up a box of mixed hot colors at Sam's Club -- 16 of them for the price of one at a nursery. I'm starting a "Hot Tropics" bed and have been digging it out below grade and filling it up with lots of composted manure and good soil. A vendor is sending me a shampoo ginger and a golden lotus banana as a trial for the quality of their products (a web co-op for a lot of small growers who can't justify the cost of having their own website and had been selling on ebay). They sent me an email about doing this and I decided to go ahead and help out these folks by writing an article after I receive the plants. I'm moving some of my own ginger and colocasia to the area and already have clumping bamboo and pineapple sage there. If I can squeeze it in, I'll add my brug to the space.

I love mums! I'm really enjoying the photos here - thanks! I bought some mums called Debbie's Daisy from Bluestone several years ago, and they lived quite nicely in pots for about three years. I finally got them in the ground this spring, and they look awful, lol! Geez, I should have procrastinated another year. But it seems to be the same problem my friend is having - something seems to be eating them, but something small - insect type eating, not critter. Either that or the critter is dieting and taking very small nibbles, lol. My friend bought three different varieties from Bluestone, and between the nibbling and the stomping by deer going through that bed, it's amazing they are still alive. I'm hoping that both hers and mine make it through the winter for another chance at life next year. Evonne, last year I bought seed from Thompson and Morgan for two different types of mums. One was chrysanthemum Koreanum Fanfare Improved F1, and the other was chrys. Early Dwarf Charm Fashion Mixed F1 Hybrid (catchy names, huh, lol?). I had very good germination with both through winter-sowing last winter, although I was a bit underwhelmed with the blooms themselves. Perhaps I need to give the plants a chance to get bigger and older before judging. Ooh! A quick look at T&M's website shows a few more kinds of mum seeds!... I had picked up a few plants at Home Depot last year, they both wintered, though the one got trampled to death this spring. The remaining plant has budded up, though they're far from opening. If it flowers before frost, I'll then consider purchasing more plants next year.

Tigertail and Firestorm, are excellent mums from Jeffries ...

I have limited garden space and I buy mums quite often. In the fall I put them in a nice pot and fill a spot in the garden left by earlier blooming plants that I have cut back. Keeps the garden looking cheery for much longer, and I've never had any problems. I must admit, the few I have have planted in the ground have not come back for me. There's so many beautiful varieties to choose from!

Morden mums are the hardiest and should bloom early for most places.

Yes, I love my mums! I have Morden Delight, Tigertail, Firestorm, Dreamweaver, Showbiz, and am looking forward to getting more! I think their flowers look awesome from later summer on, with nice healthy foliage all summer. I've never had any trouble with bugs, iron chlorosis, or anything else with these plants. They definitely benefit from pinching early on in the summer, and not too much fertilizer. They bloom tons if you fertilize, but the stems are quite floppy and it makes the plant look messy.

They don't need much water either; just decent drainage. Buy them!
