Various Plant IDs Needed

Hi there. :-)

Well I've been walking out in the neighborhood and finally remembered to grab my camera. There are some various things that have caught my eye but I have no idea what they are.

The first on is a shade tree. It looked rather like a yew tree of sorts by it's foliage.

The next one is another tree.

This third tree is one that's caught my eye for a while. It reminds me of a christmas tree.

The next two are bushes.

The first one looks like a cross between a japanese aralia and a palm.

The second bush in question is one I've had my eye on since seeing it. It has fine foliage with pink puff ball flowers. Reminds me of a mimosa in some ways.

The last one is a vine that is working its way up a tree.

Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Good idea to take pics and ask questions. It will get you off to a good start. I'd say:

1. Podacarpus (some pluses, but a lot of negatives too)
2. Japanese plum aka loquat. Yummy fruit. Nice looking ornamental tree.
3. Norfolk pine
4. One of the philodendrons
5. Powder Puff...hummingbirds love it, and sometimes even nest in it.
6. Last one is another philodendron relative, I think. There are a couple of those, which are actually houseplants run amok in the Florida climate. The variegated one, I have always known as scindapsis, but I am not at all sure that's correct.

Others will have opinions on the pros and cons of these, and will let you know the Latin names, I'm sure. Someone will also let us know if I've misidentified any of them.

Im with marcia on all of her identifications..
#2 Definately YUMMY Loquat
#4 is a split leaf philodendron
#6 might be monstera (as im told the leaves split as they get bigger and will run amuck if given half the chance)

Sorry Im still learning latin scientific names so I cant help there..

Kate, I might be some help on a couple of issues. 2. The oleander. don't be afraid of cutting them back, it's impossible to kill an oleander. When you say 'not growing to your satisfaction', what do you mean exactly? Not the right shape? You should be able to whack at will at these plants. 3. The bougainvilla. It HATES to be babied. Leave it completely alone, no fertilizer, little water. I recently cut mine all the way back to its main trunk, and I do this every year about this time because it's cold sensitive. Then I ignore it. Don't even make eye contact with it :-) .... next year it will be back in all its glory. For fertilizer, I like to mix up a 5-gallon 'cocktail' of Superthrive (just a few drops) and iron chelate. The chelate will stain the bucket so use one you don't care about. It takes about 3 weeks to see results but this is really good for plants that are losing their green-ness. My other favorite is liquid seaweed. HTH, and maybe someone else will chime in with suggestions as well. Good Luck. Mary

#4 is a Philodendron Selloum . I have many and they are great landscape plants - very hardy and easy to manage .

Agree with #2 Loquat, #4 Selloum, #5 PowerPuff.
#6 could be monstera deleciosa, AKA Split-Leaf Philo, breadfruit.
A word about loquat. While quite tasty the seed is almost as big as the fruit which leaves you very little to nibble on and a short season to harvest.
Oh, and the seeds really like to grow! While living in Houston for a couple of years with quite a few of all sizes along my back fence (from 20' to 6") I considered not mowing to see how long it would take for my yard to disappear. Reconsidered when I reflected on a new buyer not wanting to live in an impenetrable forest. LOL

Then there must be different Loquats, mine has big fruits with seldom as many as three seeds, usually just two. In other words, I get a mouthful of very very sweet and juicy Loquat fruit with each one. The seeds sprout easy but they do not 'fly' (like the GRT seeds) but come up just under the tree and are easy to pull up.

I love my Loquat :-)

I have a question about the podocarpus ... is it normal for them to grown into trees. I have three podacarpus bushes in front of my house and keep them hedgelike. Can they be trained into trees or is it a species on its own?

The tree in your picture is podocarpus gracilior, weeping podocarpus.
The bushes in your yard are probably podocarpus macrophylla.
Both are beautiful, hardy plants, but different.
Google for some pictures.

The Podocarpus is the Japanese Podocarpus, P. macrophyllus. It is the same species used as bushes and hedges but a different form. The tree is the "normal" species, it can be trimmed but will grow as a tree. This form is hardly propagated in FL nursery trade any more. Almost alll that is used for hedges, etc. is a variety called maki. It has shorter leaves and is a bushier and denser grower. Unpruned, it also doesn't get as tall, maybe 10-15ft while the species can get 40-50ft.

The big Philodendron is Selloum, P. bipinnatifidum (used to be P. selloum).

The last one is Pothos Vine, Epipremnum aureum, a green form, probably 'Emerald Queen'. There is another vine behind it with the divided leaves, it is Syngonium podophyllum, Arrowhead Vine.

I can only add, beware of that Norfolk Island Pine. They're pretty when small, but like our climate way too much. I had to spend a bit of money having one taken out when I lived in Stuart _ they get very tall and thin in our climate and tend to come down in hurricanes. My neighbor has a couple, one quite dead now, and another dying, that will have to come out soon, and he's going to have to spend a bill or two for that work because they're so tall, they'll need to be topped a couple times to keep from taking out power lines or my roof.

Yeah, once I had the name I looked up the norfolk pine. For all the trouble, I think I'll enjoy them by looking at other peoples' norfolk pine trees. *grin*
