The daylily garden that runs along the side of my driveway was only done last spring. So the lily bulbs planned had to wait until this year. Only parts of it are done with lily bulbs but it has been a good start.

Don't know if my plan is for the lily bulbs to bloom first or during daylily bloom. Those bulb lilies just started but the daylilies have aways to go.

You can see some asiatic lilies blooming but the daylilies are still only scaped up.

This spring I made a greatly expanted garden in front of a row of serviceberries that has a row of MARY TODD running across in front of it.

I moved daylilies (my Paul Owen Seedling Clumps), put multiple rows of lily bulbs accross and in the middle and finished it off with a double row of late blooming daylilies in front.

I can never get the entire thing in the camera veiwfinder bit heres a section zeroing in on the middle lily section and showing some of the lilies blooming.

The two front rows of daylilies don't currently look like much as they just put in this spring but I think given time this will be a stunner garden bed.

Its not done yet, Still plan to add more bulbs maybe and a row of Siberian Iris for the very front row in front of everything.

The flower broke off from all the rain and was barely hanging on. Couldn't get a picture that way so I just took it and set it in the lilies and took this shot.

I just popped in for a break from playing in the poison ivy and wow what beautiful pictures. Your beds are absolutely gorgeous. Just thinking about all the work you have put into them makes me need a nap ;-)

Rita, I would really, really love to tour your gardens. :) And I love hearing you talk about your methods and design, too. I'm infamous for juggling plants around the yard too, so I could really relate to that! :D It is rare for a plant to be planted just once at my house. In fact, I have a bronze fennel I got this year that I love but is throwing my world into a tailspin because it has a taproot and I feel all this pressure to put it in one place and leave it there. Omigosh! I don't think I can do it!!! LOL!

Anyway, back to your gardens: I really like how you have regular lilies worked in among the daylilies. I would not have thought to do that. Do you find that they tend to bloom together usually? I had some Stargazers at the other place that were increasingly spectacular for five years, then disappeared altogether. Do you have to replace them every so often? What do you do?

connie- I don't know how its going to go with the bulb lilies planted between the daylilies. I only did it this spring so it will be the first year. I have had lilies interplanted between my roses for years and I just love that effect so thought I would try it between the daylilies also.

I wanted to add that I am the queen of moving things around. Of course, I don't start by planting them planing to move them. I just end up having to move things for one reason or another.

Maybe my focus on the daylilies is different than some peoples way of thinking. To me they are another garden plant that needs to make the garden prettier. Poor doers and ugly flowers just don't cut it around here.

I also just don't have so much room so I need to make my space count. The last few years as I have added lots of hardscape as in walls and raised beds, things are especially coming together.

Rita, I wish I have HALF your energy. I bet your neighbors really enjoy your flowers too.

Rita - I love interplanting daylilies and lilies as well - they both have such a variety of colors that you can always find ones that look good together, they both put on pretty reliable shows every year, and you can tuck lilies in just about anywhere. Plus the daylily foliage hides the fact that lilies look like big green caterpillars.:)Beautiful garden!

Connie - LOL! I can so relate to "feeling the pressure" about plants with tap roots!! I planted some globe thistle and sea holly, both of which are supposed to stay in one place if possible, and even worse, some martagon lilies that sulk when you move them for an ENTIRE YEAR, and I've been so stressed out!! What if I can't do it? What if I decide they might look better across the garden next year?! Ahhhhh!!! Everything in my garden gets moved around multiple times...it kind of slows down it's growth, but I love having things just so. Definitely not alone on that one!

I have quite afew of my garden beds were they can easily be viewed from the street. Like so close that you can stand on the sidewalk and touch many of the flowers. I get lots of lookers walking by and even cars stopping or driving really slow. I am often out there gardening and receive compliments as well as questions about the gardens.

If you think moving some of these daylilies is a big deal then you should see what I am doing now. I am moving roses. Lots and lots of roses. Started by moving two big shrub roses but I didn't do that myself, I had some strong guys digging and lugging. But I plan to move just about every rose in my rose garden that runs along the south side of the house because I don't like it well enough. Most of the roses are staying, just moving around but afew will leave here permantly. I have lots of new ones already here or on the way very soon.

Most of my flower beds are in my backyard. Mainly because I can sit at my kitchen table or in my office and see it. I can even look out my bedroom window while lying in bed and see all my daylilies and other plants. It gives me a feeling of calm, until I fully wake up and realize I have to go weed again.

I live out in the country and I get lots of cars slowing down just looking to see what I have going on in my backyard. One of these days I'm going to put a sign out that says "If you want to stop and look, feel free"

I'd like to do more with my front yard. I've just got to many irons in the fire alreay to start on it yet. I love having 2 acres of flat land to play with but at times it is pretty overwhelming.

Rita I love the tiers and the layers of your beds. Your roses are to die for and with the lilies blooming with them it is just spectacular. I just keep telling myself one of these years my yard will look as good as Rita's. I'd be happy with half as good.

Seriously though, I have been working on this garden redo since the summer of 2001 so don't think it got done overnight. And I plant and create gardens all summer long so its constant work, not just the normal matience work but extra work.

You can see how much of my gardens are in the front as that front yard daylily corner pictured is at the very end of my driveway. I have a low stacked stone wall running accross the entire front of my property and then the gardens start.

I am currently working on adding to the rose section at the very end near the driveway. There are three half round planters staggered uphill. The rose in the first one was there for years but the roses in the 2nd I just moved in on Monday. Then I intend to move in another rose to the third planter. Then behind those planters along the driveway I am putting in three more staggered planters. I already have the blocks, just need my guys to come do the work. More roses will be planted there.

Found some pictures that show what I mean about the area at the end of the driveway.

The light white rose in back of the reddish rose just moved there. Plus you can see were I am going to do more planters on this side of the driveway. I tied one out myself to see how that might look but that brick thing is only temporary.

Finishing the planting in the half round planters is one of my projects this year. Then I have bought matching looking blocks (same color) but smaller to make three more have round planters on the driveway side also going up. Going to put more roses in the planters. I have learned (mostly by dumb luck) that daylilies planted in front of roses really look good. So those planter roses will be the backdrop for those two groupings of daylilies in that front hill.
