I think it might be because of the weird weather we had this year. The warmest late March/early April in a long time, and then back to cooler temps. The little green nubs you cut off had probably a jump-start, but then, because the soil was still somewhat cold, it stopped putting out stem nubs to take a rest. I have some that hadn't shown up when others were off to a good start. First I gently moved some of the soil at the surface to see if I could little nubs that were still underground. If nothing showed then, I inverted a black nursery pot over the place where I thought the stems should be, to warm up the soil, and waited. Didn't check every day for the first week and some started showing up. I did check more often after that, but the air & soil was still sort of cold. Might also be influenced by where in the garden it is located. My laziest ones are in a Northeast corner near the road. I usually prune my 3s when I see Forsythias blooming, but this year I could see new growth on some vines about 3 weeks earlier. And this is the first year I've had Narcissus bloom in March. Did your vet not suggest you seek further help?? It's apparent he's not capable of treating the problem so call him and ask for a referral to a neurologist. If you don't have one in your area, find the nearest veterinary university and take him there. Your dog could have had back pain a year ago when he started biting. I would not be concerned about the biting but definitely worried about his mobility. The longer you wait to have the problem taken care of the less his chance of recovery. As mwoods said, he's probably in a lot of pain. Start making phone calls tomorrow until you can find a specialist and get him in ASAP. Try not to move him unless absolutely necessary and if he'll use it, fix up an area near his bed with some pee pads so he won't have to be taken outside.

I believe this is the 4 th summer for the in ground fig and one fig in a 30 is 3 years, the other 4 in 30's are 2 years old and all the 5 gallon figs are in their 1st year. The first 2 winters the fig trees survived the winter of 10F and 9F. The 3rd winter I got 3 nights of -6F, one -5F and several just below zero. They were killed to the ground. The 4th winter I spread the larger limbs to the ground and covered the figs up with 2 feet of shredded leaves. This left a wagon wheel spokes of limbs the tree grew from in spring. Our low was -12F and the fig tree survived. My figs are just barely larger than a quarter. You must be doing something they really like. Certainly. You could even use organic mulches. When using leaves, pack them tight and allow as many inches between the end of the stems and the chicken wire as you can. The end of the stems is where the invisible flower buds are so, put plenty of leaves between them and the chicken wire. Top with cardboard and some rocks to hold the cardboard in place. Keep a reserve of leaves to add more in mid-winter as they tend to settle and could expose some stems to too much cold/wind in mid-winter. Good luck with Anna.
