Fall color in my garden

A break in the rain got me out in the garden today. The Japanese Maples were providing some nice contrasting fall color.

Ginko bilboa 'Chi Chi' with Acer palmatum 'Shania'

Abies procera 'Glauca Prostrata' and the 'Chief'

Abies nordmanniana 'Golden Spreader' with A.p. 'Red Filagree'

Pinus mugo 'Mini Mini' with A.p. 'Aratama'

Pinus uncinata 'Kostelnicek' with A.p. 'Ryuzu'

A casual glance outdoors reveals a much more winter-like scene now, as we're 90% defoliated overall. Some color still remains though. A lot of the street trees are Acer rubrum 'October Glory' & various Pyrus calleryana, both of which mostly still have leaves, but past-peak in color. There are also some Scarlet Oaks that still look outstanding - one in particular I'll try to get a picture of tomorrow morning (I go into work at 10:30 so should have good lighting for a pic) - it's a youngish tree, still pyramidal shaped & branched to the ground, but has a very intense, and late developing color every year. From the car I'd guess it's about 10" caliper, so it's no sapling, but not big enough to develop the spreading, mature form yet. Some of the later-coloring Acer rubrum cultivars (some Red Sunset but mostly October Glory) still look great, but the seedling rubrums (wild or planted) are long bare at this point. A few sweetgums are holding on, but mostly drying out and dropping. The white oaks have some leaves, but mostly the browned, dried up ones that hang on most of the winter. Same for the pins. The N. Red oaks are mostly bare or nearly so. Beeches are bare. Liriodendrons are bare. The deciduous conifers are peaking or a bit past now - I'll try to snap some pics of a couple nice Metasequoia tomorrow as well. The Callery pears are average this year. Sugar Maples pretty much defoliated. Some of the Sawtooth Oaks have a nice yellow that is just now developing - these typically stay green until sometime between Nov. 15 & December 1, then normally just turn a weak chartreuse & drop, but this year some actually seem to be turning a good yellow. We'll see what happens -they're my least favorite oak (invasive, not particuarly attractive) but this might redeem them for me temporarily.

No Dax. That's a seedling from a tree I had to cut down to free a jack-knifed Arbor truck and chipper that slid off my driveway behind the house. Fortunately I had a few trees growing from that tree with the same characteristics, light green, fuzzy leaves and brillant multi colors in the Fall. Here's another one from that same tree. Grace really puts on a colorful fall display! I grew it for awhile and can't remember why I discarded it. Why do you "hate it for other reasons"? Bihou looks really interesting! I looked up Spiraea 'Ogon' and came across this very flattering writeup: ONLY ONE DECIDUOUS SHRUB here still has its leaves at Thanksgiving, and what amazing leaves they are. Spiraea thunbergii ‘Ogon’ remains the richest gold, weeks after any other shrub but evergreens and fruit-filled hollies were worth a second look. I can’t stop looking at ‘Ogon’ (Japanese for “gold”), which catches my eye even though it’s at the farthest edge of the garden, beckoning. I have read that in the Pacific Northwest, ‘Ogon’ (Zones 4-8, sun to part shade) may even keep its leaves, and color—the kind of golden that’s closer to orange than yellow–until Christmas.

Sugar maples in old fields that didn't get fertilized all year always color better than those that were pampered. (Also fixed my post from further back.) I always see the best color when I am driving somewhere and there's no time or spot to pull over and take a pic.

Your Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph' is certainly one of the best I have seen on this forum. So many people struggle to get this one going in their garden.

What region/zone are you living in?

What's the ground-hugging plant, is that some sort of moss? I really like it, looks cool with the toadstools popping up through it.

Great pictures, wonderfull color ratio and composition. The low points of view are very powerful and unusual. I love these pictures!:) Enviable climate where so beautiful growing Acer palmatum!!!! I have killed several, but not give up:)

And 'Chief Joseph'...... I lack the words ...

No weeds??????? I grow them here 10 months per year... So many I gave up on them for now...

Thanks for the comments everyone, it is great to be able to share our labors of love with other like minded individuals.
Dave, I am fortunate to live in the PNW, just outside of Seattle. I was hesitent to invest in a Chief Joseph for a long time due to the tragic stories I had heard, but other than some tip burn it does well (**sound of me knocking on wood!)
Alex, that plant is a cool ground cover a friend gave me some starts of, not sure of the name, but it is similar to moss.
