On one hand I find it very good, that Edwin knows what plants were renamed at his german friend by the times. Thats very good to make problems clear. On the other hand I also think, if we had breeders or authors, who are able to give names in situ, without later change, our work should have been much more easier in following conifer history. By this way I like sometimes Edwin for these infos. I m fighting since 30 years with authors, who name their plants HB 1, WB 2, WB # 145, HB 28 and so on. Even the bests are able to kill their plants with unuseful names. The most tragic story is the Horstmann's. Everything is full with HB names, sometimes HB 5 or 8. By this way without loveable and unsoldable names the Horstmann Heritage is lost for the conifer history. Half of the Jerry Morris Heritage is also lost by numbers. The czech breeders are able to give names in the forest in situ. Why are others not able this? Chub Harper, Joe Stupka was also able to give names in situ, and their hertiage will be not lost. hi dave... i recognize the tag name.. but cant remember which dave ... are you coming to hidden lakes this weekend???? if so, perhaps you want to stop after and see for yourself ... email me in advance for directions .... link below to AmConifSoc website database .... insert silberlocke into the cultivar name ... there are a few pix .. and note the growth rate .... at 3 to 6 inches .... as i stated .... i bought small one gals .... put in the nursery for a few year.. takes them a bit to get up to speed on annual growth rate ..... and then i move them out into the range .... where it takes them a few other years to get to normal growth rate .... regardless... 3 inches is normal ... but i suspect they will get to 6 inches per year... when fully established ... good luck ken

Beautiful tree, ken. The cones on my 'Silberlocke' are much smaller and less plentiful; the tree doesn't really like the Colorado environment. I've completely deleted my profile a couple of time or drastically changed it, but it still shows up? Any suggestions? conon - after you change your profile, make sure you delete all of the GW cookies stored by your browser on your computer/s; otherwise your old profile garden zone setting will continue to show up on your forum posts, no matter what changes you have made on your profile page! Or you could put the new tree in the existing bed, keep it out of the way of mowing. If you put a tree where the x is you will have to cut out a circle of grass which is kept away from the tree until it is large enough to compete with the grass. So then you would have a bigger bed on the left and a dot bed nearby, which might make it look like the two needed to be joined into one. If you aren't going to develop entire new beds of plantings to flow around the pines - these would have to be pretty big to be in scale with the conifers - it would probably be better to just leave the trees with grass coming up to their trunks - a gracious effect that not everyone is able to achieve - and plant something additional near the bird bath to add interest to that part of the property. Another option would be clinging or supported (netting, wires...) climbing plants on the bare trunks. Ribbons of flaming red Parthenocissus seen against the bluish pine foliage in autumn would be wonderful, but these are large growing and vigorous - you would have to be comfortable with them getting all over the trees in time. If you want to try something like that I would plant one kind of climber in the one spot and another kind in the other. Maybe a fall foliage effect here and a flower display there.
