Small area needs some charm...what to plant?

The picket fence area at the bird feeding patio. Has a space for planting...last season I planted a dwarf butterfly bush. From guidance of the landscape nursery we use. But the harsh winter...was not kind to many yards. It among other things just didn't make it.

Since we get critters at the feeders...ground hog,raccoon,opossum...and all the other typical critter life. Something that can withstand a bit of trampling possibly. Thus I thought shrub like plant. But, maybe I am not seeing potential of what could be planted...

It gets dappled sunlight...but being next to a ravine not many hours of it. The fence is just under 3' and being 3' wide.

It really needs something since my husband decided to PAINT it! I thought we discussed dry brushing paint on if he felt it needed painted. So it is so starkly fresh painted. Hoping something planted will not make it such a beacon...

My other picket fence birdhouse area...as you can see was dry brushed...sigh...it is what it is...now...to hide the paint with plants.

Till I saw how shady it was I was thinking sunflowers and hollyhocks for vertical impact. How about foxgloves and rose campion? They look great together, and are fairly simply to grow, even from seed.

Rian, Lovely plants again, and they're growing so well for you. What does the 'Z3 area' mean? It's not like Area 51, is it, and I know you don't mean Zone 3 (weather colder than ours). Excelsa, It looks like A. petricola to me. I didn't think A. reitzii had thorny undersides and the leaves aren't as longitudinally chunky as Rian's plant. Penny, You should collect the whole capitata complex, many of the species' names relate to what they grow in, e.g. Aloe capitata v. gneissicola, A. c. v. quartzicola (and a few more, too).

I'd agree with all that. Like Dee, I am also a big believer in disturbing the soil as little as possible. I try not to turn it over with a pitchfork, I just insert the pitchfork to the depth of it and lift the soil to loosen it. And you can add good organic compost to the top and just work it in to the top 3 - 6 inches of soil before planting. I like Coast of Maine organic compost in the bags if I don't have my own With a spade, just loosen the soil around the weeds and they should all pull out very easily. For an easy way to grow pole string beans, I buy four 8 or 10ft tall bamboo poles and make a teepee with them and tie them at the top with string and you can directly sow pole string beans, it's not too late. I like purple podded string beans called 'Trionfo Violetto Pole Bean' if you can find the seed. Why? Because the bugs seem to be less interested in them, they are prettier, they cook up green, and they are not too stringy. You don't have to do much to grow string beans, they are easy and fast. If you are planting tomatoes, I actually grow them in raised 4ft square beds and they get large and no more than two plants will fit in each bed. Plant them diagonally from each other so they won't shade each other. I use grass clippings from the lawn to mulch with, but that is because I don't use any chemicals or fertilizer on our lawn. I also put flowers in the corners of the bed or Basil plants along the edge. Nasturtiums or Marigolds are easy and pretty. And you will need some kind of support for the tomato plants. Regular tomato cages are pretty much inadequate for the size the plants will get. But if you stake them and tie the tomato to the stake as it grows and put the largest tomato cage you can buy over it, it should be pretty good. I use 8ft stakes, because they will grow 6ft tall and you need to hammer the stake about a foot into the soil. Good luck and hope you have fun!

Kim - Not a problem at all. I think you should just go for whatever looks interesting. If you're worried, just don't order anything terribly expensive. Haworthia aren't that difficult to grow. Some grow slower and are more difficult than others, but that's just like any succulent. I just get them anyway! For a while, many succulent species were intimidating and I thought I would never grow them. But when I finally got them, I realized they really weren't so bad. =) Sinha - My mix is made of white granite grit (grower size), Turface, and fir bark (blended reptibark). The five photos above show its size and composition. I do customize the ratios of the mix for each plant species. Most important is the mix to be well aerated and not hold too much water. I am fertilizing my succulents and am using liquid Miracle Gro 12-4-8. It's not very fancy, but is easy to get locally and is affordable.

Lavender won't grow in shade :-) It's a full sun, hot summer plant. You could try a daphne - they will tolerate a partially shaded location nicely and offer wonderful fragrance. I'd look at one of the summer blooming ones, like Daphne x transatlantica 'Summer Ice' or 'Eternal Fragrance' or 'Carol Mackie'. They tend to have a very long bloom season and are relatively easy to care for - will stay under your height requirement but spread out to fill the space. Semi-evergreen in your climate and just need very well-drained soil (which hopefully you had for the lavender).

Are you a fan of hosta? I consider that a silly question since how could anyone not be, but ...

I would plant hosta, astilbe (if you will water it), ferns, heuchera, Dicentra spectabilis (now referred to as Lamprocapnos spectabilis) which is so pretty in spring, etc.

Also, had an idea about the paint-now that it has such a great base, you could dry brush over it with that same blue or maybe green or the red of your shutters. I think that would look great!

Oh, Nancy is right. Foxglove would be wonderful. I never seem able to succeed with them, but I do love them!

Nancy...I had briefly thought sunflowers since birds could as well eat the seeds. But as you mention...not near enough sun.

I absolutely LOVE foxgloves...my son bought me some for this past years Mother's Day. I worry though about the raccoon that do climb up on the fence...breaking their stocks down. But I am looking for some color to add...Rose champions are beautiful! Never even knew about them...(what I like from this forum is the knowledge of so many who do know of spectacular plants!)

Cyn, funny you mention dry brushing another color to the fence...my husband is painting the remainder of that birdhouse a brown. I thought to use that...and dry brush it on the cream picket fence to mute it down a bit...but, now that you mention the red...which is the roof's top color of the birdhouse. I am pondering possibly going that route as well. (Though I was second guessing dry brushing a second color...you have made me bold in wanting to definitely do it now!) I will have to google some of the names you put for suggestions...because I am not aware of a few. I do have hostas back near that area though. Though I met one woman...who cuts the stocks before they bloom OFF! She thinks it makes them look messy. (That was the first I had ever heard if one doing that)

Appreciate all your input...I am thrilled with the idea of putting something back there...besides a shrub it is amazing how tunnel vision my brain can get though. For I had thought that my only option.

You know, you might (just might) get coneflowers to bloom there. The goldfinches love them and are such fun to watch as they sit and eat the seeds on the flower! I have some that don't get full sun and they are fantastic. Might be worth a try.

I forgot to tell you how pretty it is there and in your other photo, too! I have mostly shade here, but a lot of the big trees seem to be dying or are being taken down by neighbors. I am noticing more sun lately-not good for what I have planted! Oh well. I will just have to plant more trees. :)

Cyn...I actually had planted once the heuchera...they'd didn't do well. Possibly not juglone tolerant where located, or...the dogs killed them. For they had to learn not to water the flower beds. But...those were one of the first I had planted...again...did poorly, but...it had many scenarios that could have been the cause. Loved the foliage color.

The Lamprocapnos spectabilis...are the blooms fragile?

Nancy...I am in LOVE with the Rose Champion! Curious if one should plant the entire area that...or have additional along with it. The foliage seems pretty even without bloom.

The bleeding heart will disappear completely in the summer heat and then come back the next spring. The blooms aren't especially fragile and although the bloom time isn't all that long, I just think they look so pretty with my other plants.

I hear you about the heuchera. I have some that seem to be doing great and others that either don't grow much or don't even last a season. I do love the colors though!
