Help me choose the perfect multi-stemmed tree/shrub please!
Comments (8)my loquat has been a fast-growing tree that is about 10' tall from seed 5-6 years ago. i have a pittosporum tobira that has been pruned into an open, multi-stemmed shrub, standing almost 8' tall now. it is the variegated form and the soft green might combine well with the wall color. there is also 'wheeler's dwarf' if you want to try something smaller. i also think an oakleaf hydrangea could be something to consider. not growing too fast, it could be pruned for height and they grow naturally in the form you are looking for. japanese maples are a good idea. one with yellow fall color would look nice against that wall....See MoreNeed help choosing small shade tree!!
Comments (5)My choice would be a jacaranda. The Golden Rain is very invasive. Consider also Madrone Arbutus menziesii Strawberry tree Arbutus unedo One of the Bottlebrush species Callistemon would be good Royal Poinciana Delonix regia There are several small to intermediate Eucalyptus trees. You should visit a good nursery in your area. Not a Lowes or Home Depot. The nursery would have a larger variety and a knowledgeable staff with ideas you might not have ever though of....See MoreHelp choosing small/medium tree to shade hosta
Comments (5)Black Tupelo, is a tree of many names, probably nyssa sylvatica. It is a ootentially LONG lived medium growing polite tree with great fall color. It has been a fussy tree for me to transplant though even when I have gotten them locally at Forest Keeling. 10 feet from the house....nyssa is as good as any decent sized tree. Perhaps one of the small maples like Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala 'Flame' would do. There is another our local botanical garden has I like better....not paperbark which I do have but only like in winter lol....having brain locck. Maybe head to MOBOT and get some ideas. Nyssa would be one of the largest trees I woukd consider with the house nearby. Edit: http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=x270 Acer triflorum is what I was thinking of. Comments (18)TF... not sure which block wall you are referring to. Other side of the two taller block walls (on the right side of the picture and the top of the picture) are neighbors yards. the small 3-4 foot retaining wall that sits underneath the large block wall in the back of the yard is part of my yard and has some sort of shrub that I don't know the name of. It was recommended by a nursery when i moved here knowing nothing about plants. Whatever it is, I don't care for it and will eventually replace those as well. Probably with Natal Plum, which I already have a few of growing on that very same ledge, but to the left out of the picture. They seem to do well in that spot, ever-green and have flowers that smell nice. I thought I read on some other thread about figs that somebody in the Phoenix area had that Bordeaux variety (among quite a few others) and said it was the best producer and their favorite of them all. I could be imagining that though....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
