Ginkgo majestic butterfly

This is my very first post and will put my ignorance on display for all to see. This summer I realized I am a conifer geek and bought a bunch of young trees and shrubs to put around a new pond. I saw this variegated ginkgo and couldn't say no. I also couldn't decide where to put it and so there it sits out back in a pot. It is in a gallon pot (I think) and 3 to 4 feet high. Is it to late to plant it now to survive the winter? I'm in Pittsford, NY (suburb of Rochester) and not sure of the exact zone either 5a or b seems to depend on which website I check. If it is too late to plant, how best to overwinter? Garage? Inside? The area I want to plant it in is not especially protected but not all that windy. Thanks in advance.
