Asian Fairy Bluebird and other photos

ASIAN FAIRY BLUEBIRD has struggled here, not even blooming last year. This year, I only have one scape out of six fans. But when you look at the bloom, you can't help but forgive it everything. I'm hoping more of those fans put up scapes later.

I've been unhappy with MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD for a couple of years, but this year it's really starting to show what it can do. So far this is the bloom with the bluest eye.

Here's a group shot today. The eyes didn't look as blue, and the petal color was lighter

WINTER'S ANGEL took my breath away yesterday.

NIGHT OF MIRACLES had many nice blooms all week.

HARMONIOUS SIMPLICITY is a new one I just love. I got it because of all Chris's great photos of it.

SNAKE IN THE GRASS BOO looked so amazing when it was backlit with the sun.

EMMAUS - Another one I thought I had lost over the winter. He lost a fan and moved in with his pot mate.

OMG...Winter's Angel took my breath away too Debra. Gotta go look that one up! I love it.

Snake in the Grass Boo is just lovely. All of them are lovely, but that photo is just gorgeous. Thanks for posting them.

Catching up last couple of things, my favy colors would be the jewel tones, sage, olive & dark greens, burgundys, purples, navy, golden and ivory tones, I like rich color, but muted, not bright or neon. How nice of you to ask, Karen! btw that little purple bag JT travels in now was the container for some sheets I had bought in one of those colors - kinda an eggplant. That rock in the photo I attached, I can just see a little fairy sitting on that notch in the rock like it's a little bench, if you just happened to have one in the right size that's in a sitting position. Just came to me when looking at the photo! I think it's wonderful that Jason isn't shy around cameras! Just shows how well grounded and secure he is with himself! That loving support of his family and friends helped to make him the outstanding man that he was when the accident occured, and it helped carry him through the horrible painful days he had to experience to recover! When I was showing my daughter the cute little photo album you'd made of JT's travels, when we got to your photo of Jason she said "I've seen that guy on TV several times", and I said that she probably had, and a brief discription of what happened to him, and she was familiar with the story. She said "Well, I still think he's handsome." and I agreed. He is a very handsome man despite his injuries, and a great example to us all! His kids and wife are beautiful too! Those adorable boys will be the crush of many a little girl .... And you've been fast as lightning with the junk train anyways, I know how hard it can be to get it mailed when there's one snag after the other. At least you won't be "hoggin' it" for almost 2 weeks like I did lol. Fibro is kicking me now too, hope yours is improving! I went and got cortisone shot yesterday, and it helps for a few weeks. They give it to me in the rear, not a joint since poly arthritis is 5 joints or more, and I need the relief all over. On anti-inflam Arthrotec now, helps lots, but some side effects. When I got back from Dr after the cortisone shot yesterday, my daughter noticed my eyes dilated and strange, and she asked if I had been taking some kind of pills. I said no that's just how quick the steriod affected me apparently. Dr warned that it could make my temper more sensitive the day I get it, so I told family "on shot day, leave me alone!" LOL ... if only .... but I was more irritable than my usual grouchy self and can understand how those athletes who abuse steriods can act like angry idiots! Just one shot is hard on the body, while it helps at the same time. I keep thinking of a quote I read that went something like "Getting old ain't for sissies!" (not that your're old, but I am :-)) That little jet-setter JT will be off to another adventure soon enough ... she'll love it with Jeanne & family! ~tenderlee

bfreeman, I was going to say that. Currently on my 30-in-1 citrus tree I have these general citrus categories: 1) Pink and regular lemons 2) Orange x Lemon hybrid (so they say, but you can guess this popular "lemon" fruit) 3) Pummelos 4) Grapefruits 5) Pummelo x Grapefruit hybrids 6) Navels 7) Valencias 8) Acidless oranges (some are green skinned even when ripe) 9) Pigmented oranges (ie, Moro Blood, Sanuginelli) Mandarins (counting all "tangerines" in this category) Mandarin x Pummelo hybrids (Tangelos and Tangors) Limes I would have easily grafted others like Calamondins, Sour Oranges, Limequats, Mandarinquats, Sunquat, Yuzu (considered outside the citrus genus in some literature), Ugli fruit (considered to look the same as the Yuzu and mistakenly grouped the same by some people), Kumquats, Sudachi but it wouldn't make my tree well balanced nor look good. These smallish fruits will be out of place and they have more of a columnar habit of growth. Not counting the various rootstock type. Still there are other various other hybrids between pummelos and oranges, kumquats, lemons, mandarins and limes. And the resulting hybrids can be grafted easily together. some hybrids are complex when they are back crossed, but usually are grouped according to the dominant taste or look. Anyway, that's 12 fruit categories right now, and 11 if you count Meyer in the pure lemon group. And if you go with how US market will group this, probably it would be like this: Valencias, Navels, Mandarins, Tangerines, Tangelos, Pummelos, Grapefruits, Blood, Lemons, Limes, Exotics. So I would still have 11 types. Anyway, categories are tentative and subjctive, they are always debatable depending upon whom you talk to. I myself may have miscategorized some of my citruses as the literature themselves are conflicting. Not surprisingly, California marketing is very good at confusing the markets by introducing the term tangerines when technically it would have only been mandarins. And the same mis-information is spread by the same US growers calling all non-astringent persimmons as Fuyu and the astringent ones as Hachiyas!!!

I love a real book. Though I am extremely clumsy and I sometimes tend to loose my spot, mainly cause I will fall asleep with the book in hand. Then it ends up on my face, then of course I ROLL. Oh me, sometimes I may spend at least 30 mins to an hour trying to find where I was reading and thinking wait I read that already. E-reader with the kindle app is WONDERFUL for people like me!! I so do not like the borders app. I haven't tried the barnes and noble yet for android but that will be my next app to install. 1000's of free books with the kindle app!!! They even have a kindle app for windows users.

What a story about Cowgirl. Here's to a long happy comfortable life for her inside where she's safe. It's fun to be outside for a cat, and I have one indoor/outdoor cat myself, but it worries me too....And your daylilies are beautiful as always. I like the color on Patsy Cline alot. Looks like it has alot of substance to the petals. And Linda Beck is new for me this year and hasn't bloomed yet, but if she looks like yours I'm in for a treat.....Maryl

Jan - I think Winter's Angel looked so sculptural yesteray. It reminded me of a snow egret.

Night of Miracles is sure pretty, but the best shot for me is Snake in the Grass Boo. Emmaus is a close 2nd. All are just lovely.

Patsy - It sure it hot here! I'm looking to forward to next week's high 80s. Temps in the mid-90s for this long a stretch is just depressing.

Amazing thread of awesome beauties!

After seeing the first one, I though the rest would be ordinary, but they kept getting better!

I chose four to all to my wish list...
Magnificent Hummingbird - The form and patterned eye grab my attention.
Winter's Angel - That's one of the best whites I've ever seen...great fringed/ruffles edges.
Night Of Miracles - Purple, lavender and white...what a great combination.
Snake In The Grass Boo - Just plain awesome.

Juliet - Some of those Lambertsons are very finnicky. Our three-year drought hasn't helped matters either. I think ASIAN FAIRY BLUEBIRD will probably improve with enough water to form long, healthy roots. I just wish they all performed as well as ADA MAY MUSICK.

This season I love the blue eyes, & that 1st one is gorgeous. Night of Miracles has so much going on I can't stop looking at it. Of course I love Snake in the grass boo & Emmaus! And Rick's Cherry Cheesecake, love that bright color on the white.

AFB certainly doesn't look like it's struggling! Wow, that is beautiful!

WA is amazing! I've never seen that one before. Is it my eyes, it looks like it is having the tendency to show a little teeth.

NOM is another I don't think I've seen before, love it.

Winter's Angel looks like it belongs in a bridal bouquet! And Dena Marie has a very pretty sister. I like the way Sweet Child of Mine kinda just glows from the center. Thanks, Pat

Lala - Winter's Angel has plenty of fringe including teeth and tendrils.

Ladypat - I think you're right. Winter's Angel would be pretty in a bridal bouquet!

I look forward to the day I have a whole clump of Winter's Angel blooming.

Another great group of daylilies. Most times when I see photos of Lambertson cultivars in other gardens, they look nothing like the hybridizer's pics. But I must say yours look better! AFB is stunning, and at least you have the fans to (hopefully) produce scapes later. That first photo of MH is also beautiful.

I'm not familiar with Night of Miracles, Sweet Child of Mine or Winter's Angel, but WOW! I love the analogy of the egret to WA. That one is a stunner.

Thanks for adding some new beauties to my list.

Noeyw - Glad to hear from you. I know what it's like to be at work and sneak peeks at the daylily forum. Post when you can.

Chris - I still have Asian Fairy Bluebird in a pot, and that may be part of the problem. However, I have another Lambertson, Blue Eyes Glance, that has 8 fans and no scapes this year. Last year it had 6 mature fans and only two of them scaped. I've had that one five years and it's only bloomed one season. Some Lambertsons don't thrive in freeze and thaw winter climates like we have here. AFB may be one of them. Certulean Warbler also has 6 mature fans and no scapes this time. That's a real disappointment since it did so well last year.

The "freeze and thaw" cycle might explain why I've had difficulties with some Lambertsons, too. MALICIOUS RUMORS and BLUE EYED CURLS did great the first year they were here, but didn't bloom at all the last two years. Now they're barely hanging on. EYED TWISTER has been here a few years with no blooms. I'm thinking I can use those three spots for some more accommodating daylilies.

I see what I am missing. I purchased AFB for spring shipment, and had to be given a refund. Thank you for sharing the photo. I will yet obtain a fan or two. I can only imagin the incredible kids that will come out of others gardens.....Tobin
