This mornings harvest and other ramblings.

I got up early to beat the birds, although there aren't as many now, .177 seems to be working. I picked a gallon from my Celeste and had a feast on them. They go great after a couple of cups of coffee and before breakfast. Here is a picture of what was left after I had my fun. Actually, I had taken pictures before I ate any but while looking for them to post, the pictures were not on my card.

I also got a treat from some purple grapes also. These used to be grown by my Dad years ago. I had started myself a vine and planted it down the bayou where it got neglected when we move out. 3 years ago, I came upon a small vine with grape like leaves growing in the grass near where the vine had been growing. Taking a chance that it might be the same one and not a wild grape, I air layered a portion of it. I cut it off the mother in the fall and planted it where Dad had his originally. Now it's bearing beautifully and bountifully, happy to be back home.

I also have some green ones that are just getting ripe. Another week and I be swimming in grapes.

Grapes are good, but figs are GREAT.

Hi Joe, no it's not. Just an unknown purchased by my Dad years ago.

I had to do a little experimentation with the edamame. I started pinching each of the shells. If the shells could be pushed in, then I knew they weren't ready. I even opened one of the shells to verify this. Nothing but very tiny soy beans inside. If I pinched the edamame shell, and it was firm, then I knew it was ready to be harvested. I opened up one of the soy beans, and it looked just like the frozen edamame I buy at the store. As for cooking edamame, check out this really cool wiki-how video on how to cook edamame. Living in the Mid-Atlantic--WV's Eastern Panhandle--maybe it was a stretch to write "ski resort", but it does have skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. The place is White Tail, just over the PA line from MD and about 30 minutes away from me in WV. It's just enough farther north and higher in elevation that when it gets really cold, s - - - can be made. At night, it's neat to get on I-81 in WV and see the lighted slopes in PA. I confess that I use the tubing runs; that way, if I fall, I'm pretty close to the ground. :>) It's still fun.

Sue, thanks for posting these. All are beautiful and what fun to see your pics from the same day and almost the same time. You saw things to frame a bit different than I did and that was really fun to see. I think sometime we need to have all the Idyllers present at some function or other and have everyone take photogaphs so we can all see everyone's 'view'. I also loved the narrative. I still can't believe we did all that driving in just three days! I really love your shots of the shade and vegetable gardens. It was a bit too dark to photo down on the flats when I was outside so I never was able to get a photograph of what was my favorite garden too. I'm tickled you got the pics of the kitties. For some reason I never got around to snapping photos of the furbies. I had a good laugh again when I saw Minou in your bag. She kept climbing into our suitcases as well. OK I guess I've got to get outside and get things watered so I can get off to work. I do not know how the heck you keep up with all you do with a full time job. I can hardly get home and get dinner on the table let alone take care of the gardens and exercise. Teaching a class for eight hours wipes me out. Deanne

you did excellent!! and i know them grandpa otts give ya TONS of seeds too!! LOL i still have tons of them. well till they got tipped over on the porch where i forgot about them, and then it rained and then i had sprouts, and then....medo was thinking wha......t.....in....the heck is.....this???? so i had to move some junk/and stuff out of the way and get all them seeds/vines befor whatever they were took over our house, knowing they were vines, i knew what "could" happen!! LOL then i seen the thing they were in. LOL ~Medo

Those look like bunch grapes; according to prevailing gardening wisdom, you can't grow those in Louisiana. Yet you seem to be doing it quite well. I'm amazed. JoeRay

What's a bunch grape? I've never seen grapes that don't grow in a bunch. Is that a variety of grape, then?

JoeRay, I guess no one told me that. So much for text book wisdom. I've acutally seen that written before but until you try something and prove it yourself you really don't know. Both are bunch grapes as opposed to muscadines which appear singular and in small groups. I'm not much into grapes. These have a unique flavor that make them a winner in my book. If left on the vine longer they become almost black and sweeter but as soon as they turn the color as pictured, they are good to eat. The skins are bitter on the red and slightly so on the green. The green was bought at Lowes as a Thompson seedless, which it isn't, or perhaps the climate here make the skins tough.
