Hello - and a question from a newbie

I have been "visiting" this forum for a couple of weeks now and am finding it quite interesting. So I thought that I would venture in deeper and introduce myself.

I stumbled onto the forum quite by accident one day. And I really found it interesting that there seem to be a few people from my general geographical area - southwestern MB. I find it quite interesting that in the world wide land of internet that I find someone who is almost my neighbor on the same bulletin board.

I do also have a question.

I have an large yard that this year decided was time to spruce it up. I have planted several small shrubs and a few fruit type trees and built one flowerbed that this year is all annuals.

I noticed the other night that my Dogwood seems to be dying off. My yard is quite windy and it looks like its drying out. I am watering it pretty much every night. Is a Dogwood one of those plants that needs to be in a protected area? Or is there something else I should be doing? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sandcase,

What about calling Ed at Patmore's or Nora at the Greenspot? Both are well versed in solving problems with trees/shrubs for our area.

Welcome to the forum Sandcase from another Westman gardener!

Hmmm, usually dogwoods are fairly bullet proof. Have you noticed any worms or bugs on it? Or possibly any mole holes nearby? Is there any chance of chemical drift from a nearby field? Brenda's right about taking in a sample and/or a picture of your dogwood to Patmore's or the Greenspot. Or there's always the Hort-line at the University too.

Hey! Nope, the name is after my street (which I suppose is named after the conference center and estate) - it's the 2-mile long col de sac with offshoots. There are many nice gardens here; my neighbors and I share ideas as well as plants. Mine is at the first large maple on the right, just before the 2nd stop sign. Feel free to come walk the street sometime; people have done some very nice things with their landscapes. As of now, The roses I have include about 3 or 4 hybrid teas (double delight, oregold, etc.), a couple of climbers, Amber and Scarlet carpet roses, a Home Run, and a Moje Hammarberg rugosa. I intend to get some more climbers because they really seem to take off quicker than regular teas. I of course also have all the knockouts minus "Rainbow" which seems to be only at finer nurseries at this time.

Hi, flutterby Your blog looks really charming. My style is very dependant on which room in my house your are standing in on the time. There are too many styles I like to stick to just one. Hi Sandcase! Being a newbie myself, my replies may not be as reliable as others who have been gardening longer, but here goes...Dogwoods do like some shade and you always find the wild ones growing under the canopy close to a river or creek. So they probably like it moist too. Being under the canopy would also shelter them from the wind, so I'm thinking they prefer that to out in the open.

I bought a Variagated Siberian Dogwood this spring and planted it close to a lilac and where it will get afternoon shade and a bit of shelter from the wind. It hasn't put out much growth yet, but seems content there. We'll see next year. Hope this helps.

Hello Sandcase, welcome to our lit' corner of the world ;)

Too much "dailing" watering could be the cause, give it a good drink once a week for 1-2 hours. A good soaking is much better than daily light waterings. Also water at the base not by a overhead sprinkler. Dogwoods are susceptible to blight and anthracnose (fungi).

It also could just be showing signs of stress being in its new environment, especially if you planted in later in the season.

Give it good weekly soaks, mulch around the base and it should recover hopefully by next spring.

Hi Sandcase, I'm ALSO a newbie...DH said that a dogwood needs lots of moisture and some shade. Hope this will help some, if you haven't already found help.

Thanks for the input. All my watering is done by hand since I don't have any kind of water system in place - so I'll have to think about how I could do a "soaking".

I did spray it down with a deer repellant that I wondering if it "burnt" it.
