Why I don't like side branch grafts

I have had this Picea orientalis 'Nutans' for about 8 years. Give or take.

It was a side branch graft.

I have tried to train it for vertical growth. As you can see I have somewhat but it still retains the side branch look growing vertical only because I forced it.

I took it off the stake last Spring. It is doing the 'Nutans' iregular upright growth thing with a side branch growing mentality and look.

In my opinion these grafts never look good enough to become a balanced tree for vertical growth. This one will be moving along soon and will be replace with a better specimen.

I now no longer entertain mail order purchases because side branch grafts are not an option for me when I am looking for a vertical growth specimens.
