Garden Fest at Indian River Park

I was wondering if anyone has been to this event. I was told by one of the vendors that it is a gardening event not to be missed.

Butterflygardener and I are planning on attending on Saturday. Is anyone else going or interested in going? Maybe we could meet for lunch at the food court and visit.

I go every year with Ginny. Hubbies hang out and baby sit plants and drink coffee. It is the best plant sale ever, vender from all over are there. ;o)

I guess I am hostile about it now,(not to you, but him) but I feel it was totally dishonest. In truth, I feel stupid as well. But he was under the shade of the trees and I was wearing sun glasses so the colors didn't look so fake. He put the plants in plastic sleaves, so I didn't notice it until I got home. I pulled on one of the petals and there was the true pink color. They are hyberdizing new bromeliads all the time, and I truly thought it was something new. I even said to him how different the colors were and said "oh yes, they are different." Nothing about being painted.

I would like to invite everyone to visit Smith Gilbert Gardens in Kennesaw. It is a 16 acre collector's garden that includes a conifer garden, camellia garden, rose garden, children's vegetable garden, perennial garden and woodland walk. Bring a picnic lunch and spend the day at this beautiful garden. There is also a historic house that you can tour. I'm a volunteer and member of Smith Gilbert Gardens and it is one of my favorite places to relax and enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer. Hello, Izhar, Mine have not re-appeared, yet. I keep looking at the pot and hoping for them to show their lovely selves. When they come up, I will re-post here and let you know if they look like they multiplied. As I remember from last year, they took a long time to appear. Much longer than the regular Florida caladiums. I kept the pot in morning sun and in shade the rest of the day. They were planted in commercial planting mix that contained a lot of composted plant material. I fertilized regularly and stuck to one low in P (N-P-K) because I wanted growth and division, not flowering. I kept them damp, but did not flood them.

That is pretty amazing! Were no stranger to tornadoes here in the DC area, as we usually have a few. Ive actually SEEN two in real life here, and one way down in central VA. One of the ones I saw here passed about 2,000 feet from where I lived on the 14th floor. I watched the whole thing and saw the damage occuring. It was an EF0 when it passed us, and lifted and touched down a few times in Northern VA, Crossing interstate 395 twice and touching down next to the Pentagon, and passed the Washington Monument just above the ground. As it moved NE is turned into a monster EF4 and killed several people in College Park MD. THis was back in 2001 or 2002 I think. We have had a few EF4s here, but most are EF0 or 1s. We got hit be severe weather several times this summer, and my neighborhood got the worst storm of the summer. We took a direct hit. It was a microburst, with winds around 110MPH. IT was as was described here... a wall of rain and everything turned white like blowing snow. It ripped up around 1000 trees in our neighborhood, partially ripped off roofs, blew off several Chimneys, destroyed several large signs for businesses, blew out several large windows including that of our post office, ripped shingles and siding off of most houses including ours, bent METAL LIGHT POLES at a 90 degree angle, crushed about 150 cars, and killed 1 person. You name it it happened and people were finding property blown several blocks away. Many of my friends here took extensive damage. It literally looked like a BOMB had gone off here, and it sounded like a freight train when it went through. It only lasted about 5 minutes or so, and the gusts to 110 was only about 30 seconds, but man it was insane. This was easily a quarter century storm. I saw the PURPLE coming right for me on the radar, and we were under a severe warning for damaging winds of 80+. no one was expecting the 110+ MPH winds tho. I was outside trying my best to secure things, take down the umbrella, pile up the chairs, take the glass out of the coffee table, bring in the cushions.. etc. I heard the first gust coming and it sounded like a train coming. I could see debris and dust in the air about 30 seconds before hit hit. It was probably about 65 MPH. It was a dry gust before the rains. Then the rains started and each subsequent gust was stronger and stronger until the big one came. I would have gone in the basement but the only way in there is to go outside so I was stuck on the ground floor. I moved to the side of the house(front) that was not facing the winds and could see peices of siding and roof shingles and large tree branches flying through the air. The house shook like an earthquake and creaked. I was pretty damn scared because you couldnt see much. Fortunately the sudden wind direction change never came, and after 5 minutes of hell, it was over. No power, sirens going off all over, EVERY street blocked. Could not drive anywhere. It blew all fo my plants flat over, as well as all the furniture, and picked up a 200 pound shed and tossed it 30 feet like a toy. The yard was filled with 20+ foot branches but fortunately no entire trees came down right near me. Everywhere else was a different story. Every other house had a tree on it. The official wind gust recorded at National Airport 1 mile away was 74MPH, however they were not in the direct path of the microburst. The winds were estimated at about 105-115. I have been through a CAT 2 hurricane before, and this was IDENTICAL to what I experienced in that. Glad to hear you took no damage. Some how, none of our furniture nor plants got damaged. the only thing damaged was a couple of clay pots which were lifted and thrown. The plants (Bananas) in them were fine. The only other damage was some siding and shingles ripped off the roof, but that was it. We got VERY lucky because many right around us within 20 blocks got extensive damage. There are sections of our neighborhood now that look completely different. Where once the trees and yards were filled with 100 year old trees, there are very few left standing and it is very "open" looking now. Thanks for the story and sharing this with us. Its been a pretty violent summer for lots of people in lots of different places for sure.

This is truly an Awesome event with vendors from all over selling plants and garden related items.
Stop by the Master Gardener tent if you are there Sat AM so I can meet you! I will also be doing Sunday at the
Ask The Experts area 12:15. Hopefully I will be too busy helping with questions on ORGANICS but I will gladly say HI before or after!
Even if you don't have time to say Hi this is an event you do not want to miss.

Hi Katkin,

I may do Sat alone. MB's quilting group has probably arranged to fly in some instructor and has quilting classes on that SAT & SUN. Go figure! She wins the Quilt contest and yet needs classes!

I already marked the calender and should I be able to make it I will bring the fuzzy leafed plant for you.

I think this will be our 5th year and I wouldn't miss it!! Will be great to see a lot of the GW friends. I don't post much, but always lurking and looking forward to a fun day.

Tony and Evelyn it will be so good to see you both again and I am sure you'll both find some plants you'll love. I hope some other can meet us at 12:00 on Sat for lunch in the food court. ;o)

It will be great fun to see what plants you can't resist and to meet fellow GW'ers. Like Ginny said this is our 5th year and we wouldn't miss it. ;o)

Kat, yes we will be there and I'll look for you too. Just not sure that we'll stay for lunch though as we are taking care of Kathy's little dog and don't want to leave him alone too long. I plan to get there early and stay for at least a couple of hours.

Evelyn - If I don't run into you before I'll be in the food court around 11:00. Will probably be wrapping it up to head home then. Will have a green cart and DH and hopefully lots of plants. lol.

Kat - Sorry, but I don't have any floating plants except for the lilies and water lettuce. Anything else I can bring you? I have a small rooted salvia purpura or flowering maple for the butterfly garden.

Tony I'd love to ride up to Vero on my bike, it's just a hour north, but...I'd have no where to put plants!! So...I'm riding with Kat...who has a mini van that we can fill...and you know we will!! LOL

Tony, sorry we missed you. We wore bikini tops just for you. Somehow our stomachs didn't get sunburned at all,
and yes, I the Brom-ho fell victim to Tropiflora. They took plastic after all. I can't wait for next year!

What a great event, the park was huge and well shaded under the ancient oaks. The vendors were all busy, the selection and variety was amazing. The company and the journey was as usual the best as alway. I had a wonderful time. GINNY it was great to see you and DH you look fabulous. TONY...I'm so sad we missed you...I was looking forward to seeing you again.

Terrie The three crazies you met today were Butterflygardener, Coffeemom and myself MsMarion. It was wonderful to meet you. I hope to bump into you again. I do hope that sweet lady was OK. Do you think it was heat stroke?
Cindee you have to mark this event on the calender for next year. We'll make a weekend of it.

It was such a wonderful day with lots of vendors and beautiful weather. I had to make two trips to unload plants as my little cart wouldn't hold them all, but I just can't find the variety in my neighborhood.

Kat, sorry I didn't see you, but we were heading out as you were heading in. Did get to say "hello" to Marion, Kristi, Tony, Evelyn (abendwolke), and Susan (bodiggly). Will be a lot of GWers out planting today. I know I will.

Cindee, I was hoping to meet you, so maybe at one of the swaps.

O MAN ! It figures I would miss such a treat that you three put on for me. MAYBE I did see you, just never got to look at the faces? I was able to see Ginny and her mega cart loaded with goodies! She really knows how to stuff a cart with colorful plants and things.

I got there early, found a mango tree and walked around with it as if providing my own shade with it while checking the food court for everyone but it seemed maybe something happened and ya's couldnt make it.

Thank you for giving me the usernames. I had remembered butterflygardener, but couldn't remember yours and coffeemom's.

And thank you for your help and care with my friend, Lois. I do believe it was heat and dehydration. She wound up spending about 8 hrs. in the local ER. I really appreciate you checking on us and helping out.

I look forward to being active in this group. I actually haven't spent much time on gardenweb in the past few months.
I'd like to be part of the "gang" next year, too.

Tony, we got there a little after 11 am. This included a pit stop, stopping for gas and getting lost after a wrong turn. Then I had to park Kat's van in the North 40. Of course on the way to the food court we stopped and bought salvia. It was a miracle we got there at all! We'll catch ya next time.
Terrie, it was nice to meet you and I'm glad Lois is OK. Come be part of our gang of crazy plant people!

it was well worth the 1 1/2 hour drive for me. What a perfect day and so many vendors! I splured buying a copper garden shower and a few ferns. Met Tony but forgot to get the sunflowers out of his car. Ts, I guess I am a diz... and I did see some familar looking faces but wasn't sure and didn't dare to just jump at strangers. Ginny and I did some swapping, thanks Ginny for the bromeliads :-)

I am looking forward seeing everyone at one of the next swaps.

Tony, don't believe the bikini's for a minute. Those old broads were probably all wearing sweatshirts with their heavy spun braziers underneath!

Ginni, sorry darlin. I want to meet you too. Perhaps this summer after my 2nd hip installment. Thanks for all your encouragement earlier!
