When is a yellow, not just another yellow? Seedling pics.

Well since it is still pouring rain, I will post lots of pics today. I apologise to those on dialup, but how do you choose when you love them all. I started growing seedlings 3 years ago when I didn't have much to cross. I did fall in love with both Bold Encounter and So Many Stars, so yep I did it.

I made a water bed like Tom Maddox uses and put about 150 seedlings in it, talk about a small operation, LOL. Until today it hasn't had much water except for the water hose type of water. It is FULL right now and still more coming down.

Most of my seedlings bloomed this year allowing me to evaluate and save some. I sent a friend of my sons, home with a whole pickup load full of my rejects, but he was ecstatic to get them. he loves free stuff.

OK when is a yellow just not another yellow? When it is YOUR baby, thats it.

Some of these I posted before, but what the heck, no work outside today, so I'm posting seedling pictures, feel free to comment on my new babies.

I love all the yellows, and I've wondered the same thing myself: When is a yellow not just another yellow? You do know that Curt Hanson has a plant named JUST ANOTHER YELLOW?

I couldn't evaluate the differences between many yellows out there, so it would have to come down to form and performance. Yours are beautiful.

The Real Problem is this: The Proof On The Ground In the forests of Northern California, bark is literally being scorched from trees. On many specimens, only a thin strip of bark remains on the shaded side of the tree. Foliage is being scorched with many trees having only a fraction of their normal leaf cover. Many native species of plants are not even sprouting any more. The organisms that do still manage to grow appear miniaturized in some cases. What are just some of the results of excessive UV exposure to plants? Phytoplankton accounts for some 30% of the worlds' intake of animal protein. Phytoplankton and the microorganisms they consume are killed by excessive UV levels. (Global plankton populations have already been reduced by 40% to 50%. Much of the die off is likely due to increased UV radiation.) Less plankton = less carbon-dioxide absorption. Hey Carol! Thanks! I was sorta wondering about those lower leaves, whether they might die off. These guys get plenty of light. One thing, I probably should've potted some of them a bit deeper and buried their long stem more, but I was afraid I'd break it off! As for the fertilizer, I have it highly diluted. And I don't have a mister, I just use a squirt bottle maybe a couple times a week. I usually just mist a few squirts over the plant and the surface of the soil. Maybe I'll quit that and just use plain water all the time instead. Earlier last month I filled two more of those 72-cell seed starters with more seeds that I gathered off the bushes. They had gone thru the freezing temps and light snow we had, and some had even begun to germinate in the hips. So I figured by putting them out in the breezeway again, where it's still only around 40 degrees, they should start popping up like these guys did. But I see nothing happening. Since finding more of the other ones coming up after I put their little greenhouse outside, I'm wondering if I should put these two other ones outside too? I think they'd get better light maybe. The breezway doesn't get very much light. Anyway, this is my first attempt at this, and I'm so excited I can't stand it! I hope all of these 12 first babaies will have good enough blooms to keep!

Well, I took a closer look as best I could at my rose and didn't see any damaged canes, and I also noticed as I walked around the garden that all my roses seem to be doing this to some degree. Now, I don't have but 5 roses (small yard) but all of them are, and nothing else, no other perennials, annuals etc. In my other garden bed where the rest of the roses are, they are doing this with just a few leaves here and there. It doesn't seem to be concentrated near the bottom or top but throughout the interiors of the bushes. I've got William Baffin, Westerland, Livin Easy, Pretty Jessica, and a mini rose Sleeping Beauty.

Yes, Betsy, I see the white midrib. You take fine photos, but sometimes the camera just can't capture the same beauty the human eye sees. Is the seedling from your own cross? Thanks for sharing! Julie

I don't pay too much attention to pure yellows in the garden, and I hardly ever photograph them unless they're gigantic or have an amazing edge. But I do use them to separate the colors I like in the garden. LOL They seem necessary, but they don't get my love and devotion like the pinks and purples.

Most of your yellows, however, are not plain. They have eyes or edges that make them not just another yellow. My favorites of these are Alexandra Paige and the Princess Diana X Green Illusion crosses. Those make me sit up and take notice.

Oh joy, more pretty babies....geez...I can't pick a fav from this bunch...but some that really stand out for me are,
your Alexandra Paige, 09-37, 09-33, and 09-31. OK, where's the next batch? I wanna see more please. :)

Love those eyes. Alexandra Paige is outstanding! Scott Bennett seedling is very nice, too.
And seeing green on those edges-- the formal look of the Princess Diana x Green Illusion seedlings.
Love 'Sherry Lane Carr' and charming 'Lemonesque' name is so fitting. Looks huge.

What a nice collection of seedlings. Alexandra Paige has a nice pink color to it.

And that PD x GI yellow is very pretty. I just love the edging on it.

Your son's friend is a very lucky person. I know how thrilled I am to get a freebie from a friend.

So many nice ones. Can't pick a favorite as they are all so pretty. Well maybe seedling 2008-12 or Alexandra Paige or....No I just can't pick one.

Your seedlings are beautiful. I like nice yellows,
especially when they have eyes, etc.
