Some First Flowers of the year.

Lilies, lilies and more lilies. These are my RED ALERT AT hybrid lilies opening to put on the spring show. I love the way they look there. Last year I had them forward, right in back of my row of daylilies there and I did not like it. So last fall I moved them back.

ROCKS CRY OUT a 2009 Korth intro that opened its first flower of 2010 today. Love it :-))

MISSISSIPPI MAN also opened its first flower of the year. You can't really tell here but the flower is really large. Last year it had afew small flowers (although pretty) so I am, glad to see its really shaping up.

RED RAMPAGE is a favorite of mine. I was happy to see it opened a flower today.

I don't know of home gardeners who grow other "bulb" plants from seed. But there are lots of tubers/bulbs that you can buy, and then lift in the fall for storage, though if you can grow a coconut palm, most of them - including dahlias, you probably don't have to lift, unless you are going to divide them. Many people in zone 8 in the US only dig their Dahlias every couple of years to divide the tubers. There is a Bulb forum on GW - I would ask this question there if you really want to start from seed.

My first year with Clematis, I have some questions

In my zone 7a garden, I trim all my type III and sometimes my type II clematis back in late December. Some people wait until late winter or early spring to do so. Any time after the plants have gone dormant and aren't likely to be reawakened into growth by pruning is fine for your pruning. You didn't say what clematis types you have but since they were just planted this year, all types that you planted should be trimmed back in winter to early spring to within 4 or so inches of the ground. I have used various things for mulching my clematis including grass clippings, homemade compost if it is available, pine needles, and various types of wood mulch. I have mulch around my clematis year round as it helps maintain constant soil moisture and soil temperature during all seasons. It also decomposes and adds tilth to the soil and draws earthworms to the area and they in turn will deposit their castings as fertilizer for your clematis. Unless you live in climate where clematis don't go dormant or won't go dormant until late in the winter, you should not be fertilizing clematis at this time of year. Hope that helps.

I started Solidago speciosa from seed last year, and they did not flower the first year, just made small basal clumps of leaves. Now I'm trying to figure out where they're coming up in my meadow garden. You might want to consider Asters - they are lovely late season bloomers, and all 3 species I started from seed last Spring bloomed a little in fall. One species that might work okay in a container is Aster laevis (aka Symphyotrichum laeve or Smooth blue aster). It has pretty lavender-blue flowers, nice foliage, and Bill Cullina says it one of the best for garden use with "a neat habit, rarely needs staking, and is very drought-tolerant".

Those lilies are looking gorgeous! I'm with Christine, love Rocks Cry Out. Sure wonder the story behind the name. The roses are so pretty. I bet it smells wonderful around your place Rita!

Hi Rita! I haven't written much on here in a while, but sometimes have time to come and look. I've been enjoying all the lily and perennial pics on here this bloom season so far! Are the small multi-colored miniatures below the red roses Hot Tamale? They sort of look like them, and they are my absolute favorite miniature rose. I had them and Sun Sprinkles planted together in Weatherford and absolutely loved it, so just curious. They are gorgeous with the red, whatever they are. I really enjoy seeing all your hardscaping that you have added last year with your lilies! As usual, your gardens are breathtaking!! Jan G.

Hi Jan- Nice to see you posting here again. You are really good :-)) That is certainly HOT TAMALE with the red also miniature BLACK JADE in that rose picture. I don't really care for miniature roses in general, I only have a hansdfull of them but those I have I do love. HOT TAMALE has such a great color that I have always liked it.

Nancy- Some of the roses are scented and some are not. Sometimes I smell roses when I am in the garden, it depends on the time of day and were the wind is blowing. I know neighbors and passersby say they can smell the roses.

And I was really pleased with the way the lily groupings there by the fence turned out :-))

I LOVE Rocks Cry Out, although I like Mississippi Man & Red Rampage too. Yes, I know, I just like all of them :)
Your lilies are lovely. I didn't think I would care for Red Alert when I had a chance to buy them, now I wish I had. I thought they would be very close to some I have, but those look much more substantial. Your roses, as always, are beautiful.

The thing about RED ALERT is that it is one of those upward facing lilies. I really like the fact that they face up and out. Plus I truely love the color.

Mississippi Man is my favorite daylily, but I like them all. Your lilies and roses are beautiful as always. You do a great job of always having something blooming in your yard.

I find myself humming, "Everything's Coming Up Roses" while looking at your photos. The roses just blow me away with their beauty. I wish I could grow them here. Rocks Cry Out and Mississippi Man are both gorgeous!

I think more people could grow roses well than think they can. Unless you are in an area that is just overly infested with those darn Japanese Beetles. Otherwise its just spray the systemic fungicide. Anywhere on the east coast, that certainly includes here, it's spray or put up with blackspot.

Are they asiatic? If I wanted half the show you
have, about how many lily plants would I need?

Common asiatic lilies usually bloom before oriental and trumpet lilies. The lilies on the picture there are about 20 lilies that are one of the asiatic trumpet hybrids. But they are planted in front of other lilies that you can't really see because they are not blooming.

ROCKS CRY OUT;;;;It is Beautiful,I love it.It looks huge, too. I like MISSISSIPPI MAN, TOO,but,rocks cry out IS my favorite.I love them Lilies too, the way you have them all together in a row.Very pretty.The MINI roses are pretty.But, I LOVE that WING DING in that planter.Its gorgeous there..

The edge and color were ever deeper on todays flower of ROCKS CRY OUT but it was splotchy. This would be a first as I have never had a splotchy flower on it before ever.

Yeah, but this has been the year of the splotchy for some reason. A lot of blooms that have never been splotchy started out that way for me. I absolutely love Rocks Cry Out!

I absolutely love it too. Don't worry, it is in no danger of being tossed for a splotchy flower. I see many more buds so will take pictures of the next ones on it to open :-))

Rocks Cry Out and Red Rampage are my favorites here. Although I love the other one too. Your roses are beautiful.
I have Red Alerts also (not as many as you do). Your's look very nice in front of the fence. Mine are on the border of the woods and they get lost in the background. I need to move them this fall where they will show up better.

It did get splotchy for todays bloom, but its deeper color today is even more gorgeous then the first one.Can't wait to see m ore of this one.WOW, its gorgeous.

Well, here is ROCKS CRY OUT today.

The color is still there and its not so splotchy as yesterday. I love the color and edge on this flower. And never any troubles opening. It opens wide everytime.
