My little fig tree

This is my unknown Portuguese fig that I received from sue, but when it arrived to me a few months back it was half die from being dried out. The postage company didn't seem to care that she wrote keep cool on the box. I gave it a chance but it started to die at the tips and all growth stopped. Is there any possible chance that it will start growing again?

The plant have had this same growth for a month or two now and nothing new have come from this yet.

Here is what I do - if it is still alive at all - keep it. Don't get rid of anything until you are sure it is "deader than a door nail" as the expression goes.

I've had figs come out of the garage in April and not break dormancy until July. Just this spring, late March, in fact, I forgot to bring about 20 one year old plants back in the garage and they froze, killing all the new growth they put on. Some of the varieties began pushing new buds from top growth within three weeks, a couple waited until last week to push new growth from the root, most were a combination of new growth from the roots and a few new buds on the trunks and two (both Atreano) have yet to show any growth at all. Figs are strange plants indeed in some of their growth habits, but they are also darned hard to kill. Keep nurturing it and see what happens.

Leave them alone. When it is clear what is still viable (after releafing), then you can prune.

I had a terrible problem with tiny brown spots on every fig leaf for the longest time. Some sort of fungus, I suppose. During the Big Freeze, all the leaves fell off my fig, then when it started greening up a few weeks later, I was ready with my spray bottle loaded with copper fungicide. I sprayed the new leaves very aggressively on several occasions, and everything is looking terrific now.

I've got two fig treelets; one bought two or three years ago from the bargain bin, exact type unknown, which is in a big pot and stays outdoors over winter. It's quite big, lots of leaves, and has one biggish green fig on it which I'm waiting for - that'll be the first. The other came as a present from a friend last year, Brown Turkey, is in a small pot and overwintered in the greenhouse. About 40/50cm tall now, not so many leaves, but we have had 5 figs off it already. Small, but delicious! The olives on my little spindly tree in a pot don't seem to get bigger than tiny beads before they disappear...

I find that figs will stay in a dormant like state for some time when young. Then, they will grow vigourously. My Conadria didnt grow for a whole year, not a leaf, nothing. The next it grew 5' tall and about 4' wide and produced a large crop. I would let it be, I think you may be surprised one day.

Hello american fig boy.I started four portugeese fig tree cuttings from Sue also.Two of them are in two and three gallon containers and growing fast.The other two are in small clear containers with only four leaves each with no more leaf growth,but have numerous roots.Some cuttings and fig trees take longer than normal some years.Don't let pots get hot from the sun.Place a piece of plywood in front of the pot.Phil
