Stamile blooms steal the show today! (photos)

There was a lot more blooming this morning than I had anticipated, but my husband and I just kept coming back to a bed I made last year that is dominated by Stamile daylilies. My husband just shook his head and said, "Why are these so much bigger and better than any of your others?" My answer: Patrick Stamile's a hybridizing genius. I sure hope he will continue to hybridize, even though he has left Floyd Cove. Just take a look at these:

WALKING IN BEAUTY ffo

BELLA SERA ffo

ARCTIC LACE

BORN TO RUN ffo (I was pleased with the opening because thrips have been after these buds for a week.)

ZEPHYR'S SONG ffo (This thing was enormous, nearly 8 inches across. And the edge really had a green tint to it.)

Sure there were other flowers today, but they just didn't compare to the Stamile group.

CRAZY IVAN ffo (This bloom was on a 4-inch scape. CR--A--ZY! The other scapes are tall and not ready to bloom yet.)

GRANDMA'S SMILE duo

QUEEN OF NARNIA is improving with each bloom. But it's not the caliber of an ARCTIC LACE or LAST SNOWFLAKE.

Wow, wow, wow! I would love to have all of those beautiful Stamiles in my garden. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be tied with Crimson Edgings and Arctic Lace. But then for 2nd......all the rest. I don't see anything here that I don't love. Thanks for sharing!

I'm repeating Michelle, but Wow, wow, wow! Each picture I thought this one is my favorite, but then there is the next one. Born to Run is gorgeous, gotta be a favorite, but then, maybe Crimson Edgings is my favorite. But Jamaican Love might be my favorite.

Ngraham - Zephyr's song has put on a magnificent show this season, with its tall scapes and huge blooms. It just started reblooming today, so I get to enjoy it for awhile longer in July. Jean - I knew you would like all these. They're your kind of daylily: round and ruffly. Chris - It's hard to know which ones do well in the North. Maybe you could post a message on the AHS Robin and find out which ones do well in your zone and colder. Christine - Last Snowflake remains my favorite daylily out of the 600+ I grow. It just has a certain presence that transcends all the others. It's bloom is large - 7 inches - and very voluptuous. It's also heat proof and rain proof. But Arctic Lace is whiter and does seem to rebloom better. Arctic Lace is definitely in my Top 12. Debra

I love this thread! I am so in love with his dls it's pathetic! I'd marry him w/o meeting him if he was single :) That's how much I love his dls! I'm still waiting for that zone change that they were promising several years ago! Strange to hear Rita aone 6a/7b not be able to grow them & Debra in 6b can, albeit not as prolific as FL. Very weird! Edward Kimball in z5b is experiencing pretty good odds, seems cultivar dependant. I love reading your experience Jan & it seems he consistently strives for great garden performers as well as beauty. I so appreciate his honesty in all of his descriptions & how they will perform in different areas of the country. I can't wait to move down there. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems Guy Pierce has taken over all the financial aspects of the business leaving all the creative work to the Stamiles. He seems like he is doing a phenomenal job & love to see him posting on the LA. I oftened wondered how any of those big guys could compete with how the LA operates. Very, very smart! Can't beat 'em, join 'em. The prices he is asking with the number of fans is a great deal, until you get outbid, LOL! Next I would be interested in hearing which ones melt in the heat. Trying to taper down that list for move time, if they melt I will just let my friend keep them.

Those are two very nice eyed rebloomers. I just love Gillian, but I don't recall ever getting rebloom on that one. It must be in too much shade where it's planted. I noticed a couple of new rebloom scapes here this weekend. It will nice for us to see some blooms in August. Debra

Another Wow. Glad to see your blooms are opening. I have some Stamile's here.It is a gamble whether they will open well here in our area. I keep adding and pushing the limit but sometimes we just have to try.

I got JAMAICAN LOVE last spring but it never bloomed. This year it has 2 scapes so far coming up that I can see. Your pic of your clump is gorgeous.

Thanks everyone! I was surprised that so many of you picked Crimson Edgings as a favorite. It doesn't have the round form Stamile is known for, but the edges are very striking. For those of you smitten with Born To Run, it held its color pretty well today in high temps of 90 and horrible humidity.

My vote would be for Born to Run.. then probable Zephyrs Song and Bella Sera , all of them are very nice and Stamile has done a great job hybridizing..

Quite frankly though Debra, your photography out does his!

Whomever takes his pics they are just so photoshoped it drives me nuts.. yours are way more beautiful, natural garden setting...

Silverkelt - Maybe I should get a job photographing daylilies for the big hybridizers. Wouldn't that be a dream job? Thank you for your kind comments.

Kathy - Jamaican Love finally has 28-inch tall scapes this year. It's been very short the previous two years. The eyes on the bloom have been nice and patterned all week. They don't always show the gradiation in color.

I posted the photos in the order I liked them. Walking In Beauty was my top favorite today with Bella Sera second, and everything else tied for third.

Those are gorgeous! So far only the older Stamiles do well for me. The rest just die off. I wish I could grow some of those!
