Second year seedlings started blooming

Hi all, I haven't posted in a while, but have stopped in now and then to check out the daylily pics. Wish I had more time to spend on the forum. It's fun to see what everyone is growing and how the gardens are changing and developing. It's raining here today so no pollinating. I decided I'd take time to share some pics of some second year seedlings that are blooming now.

The one above polys every now and then.

I'm lovin' this Jelly Maker kid. Nice full round form with 6.5 to 7" blooms

Hope to be able to post a few more as they start to bloom.

I like the peachy-yellow one with the ruffled gold edge and chartreuse throat. I'd be delighted to see one like that in my seedling patch!

It is certainly possible here in MA with not too much effort. All of mine older ones are sending up buds right now. Give them plenty of sun after flowering and then put them outside in the summer. As Hans Werner suggests feed regularly. The bulbs need to be nourished by the sun and fertilizer to replenish over the summer. I put mine in the shed in September to force dormancy and keep them in a cool dark room until I see them start to grow. Normally this is in early January. I repot some of mine without too much damage. I wonder if buying them at a chain store (a not so dependable source) is also part of the problem. I dont think you need to pay the ridiculous prices at Jackson and Perkins or White Flower Farms but much better bulbs can be had at a local nursery for about $12. Size matters here.

That seedling is very pretty. It kinda reminds me of Chicago Candy Cane. That is an oldie but it really stands out in the garden. I really like it!! Yours has more bells and whistles and I 'm sure will stand out all the more. Lovely!!! I'm just seeing scapes on my first seedlings. They are last years. I have scapes on about 30% which is really good for the north from what I understand. My seedlings are all dips and mostly unusual forms and spiders. (love those spiders) So they have clumped up nicely. One seedling has 3 scapes already. it's only 18 months old. Cool eh!!! I lost the marker over the winter....but I know one of the parents is Apple Swirl. The scapes are taller than apple swirl's already so that is a bonus! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!:) Ange

The seed was sent to me by someone on another forum. They new it was from a polyantha but didn't know the ID, hence the Pollywog name. I often make names out of the parents names since most of them are open pollinations. It helps me remember who at least one of the parents is. The flower is very tiny, maybe only an inch across, but it does usually bloom in clusters of 4 or 5 blooms, like a polyantha, which makes a bigger statement. It doesn't have any fragrance that I can tell. It's been very winter hardy for me but it does black spot some. It's still in a pot and I'm hoping to get it in the ground this year so I can see what it really can do!

Cheerful and EARLY! I have not seen black stemmed daylilies in person, only seen one in photo. Would make for a longer period of interest, but I personally would not get one unless it had a flower I liked. Looks like Heavenly Dark Knight is a lovely shade of red.

You are getting a lot of variety. I like numbers 1, 4 and the last one the best.

The Jelly Maker kid reminds me of a bigger Citrix with a pointed pattern.

Very pretty seedlings. At least you get to see how the blooms hold up under wet conditions.
