Bon Jour Rose Lovers! (very photo heavy)

Hi All! I was recently in Paris and thought of many of you throughout the week. Cameron, thank you for all your tips in advance!

The roses were just spectacular. Here is a sample of what we saw. Please pardon the overcast skies and slightly dark pictures. We only had one day of sun, but it didn't matter! It was all so beautiful.

I had no idea "The Thinker" would be surrounded by such beauty!

A couple other pictures from the Musee Rodin. The rose borders were really spectacular and I was surprised how they had all different varieties and colors mixed in together.

We happened upon a beautiful garden along the Seine in the Bastille. There were all kinds of city gardens throughout Paris. They were tended so nicely.

Also along that same walk.

And one last one from that garden.

The Promenade Plantee is a 3 mile walk that is elevated about 4 stories from the street. It used to be a railway viaduct and now is a beautiful garden walk.

At the end of the Promenade was this playground. OK, seriously, roses on the fencing and inside the playground? I was amazed!

Roses at the Paris Botanial Garden

I was surprised that there weren't more roses at Monet's garden. Here is a beautiful standard that was just coming into bloom.

For all you iris lovers here are a couple more pictures from Monet's garden. There must have been hundreds (if not thousands) of iris blooming when we were there.

Ever wonder how they plant those perfect rows of annuals in public gardens. These photos show the gardeners working on a huge garden bed. It was so interesting to watch them. The two guys on the ladder would plant a row (plants were already laid out for them) and then they would wheel the ladder back to do the next row. Quite ingenious.

Wouldn't you love to get your hands on all that plant material?!!?!

We didn't go to Paris just for the gardens but it sure was a nice part of our trip. Hope you enjoyed the pictures!!

A woman after my own heart,i'd want to see the gardens first,then if i had time left,i'd check out other sites.LOL,LOL

Wow! Fabulous roses. You did a great job on the pictures; in fact, the overcast sky was an advantage. Much better than the heavy contrast that comes with bright sun.

Frank, I don't think you're a dork, at all! There's nothing wrong with being sentimental, and remembering good things... even if they do make your eyes tear up. I can clearly remember the beautiful Bleeding Hearts my Grandma grew... and her luscious Peonies... and I half laugh/half cry when I think about all the plants my Mom killed, even though she tried so hard... she just didn't possess the gardener gene! It skipped a generation! Actually, Ryan, I have my Calla Lily planted in a very well-draining medium, in a clay pot. It bloomed and grew ok last season, but wasn't really that impressive. It was a $2 bagged rhizome from Lowe's, I think. Not the highest quality, I'm sure. I'm just surprised it hasn't begun to grow yet this year. I haven't had a chance to look at that website with the Irises yet... but I'm going to! I never miss a chance to drool at online photos of gorgeous flowers! I didn't know that those fountain pumps could be adjusted... you learn something new every day! Thanks for that, Ryan! That little piece of information has just widened my choice for an indoor water thingy... I need to up the humidity, and I think a little fountain will help. Well, guys... it's been fun, but the dogs have their legs crossed, so I'm off for now! Have a sweet day!

Thanks, everybody! By next year, I think it will really be coming into its own. A lot of the plants are still only about 2' tall and not really filled out much yet. The weather this spring didn't encourage a lot of growth, in spite of my feeding them. Hi, Kat! After seeing Ill's lovely Abraham Darby, I really want one. Nicki has one, too, though I haven't seen it in bloom. They just look so gorgeous! I got your emails, but will have to answer later. I'm suffering from some severe neck pain, and I can only sit at the computer a few minutes at a time. I WILL get back to you, though! Nova, I'm sorry to say that MOST of that underplanting you like so much is weeds! *blush* I've been very neglectful of getting rid of them. I DO have some blue daze, sweet alyssum, and agapanthus here and there. But my dream is to get a whole bunch more of that Diamond Frost euphorbia and spot them all the way around the bed. They are just stunning! Nami, I think I'm going to get a large Belinda's Dream pretty soon...when I get the Abraham Darby...so not to worry about rooting one for me. But thank you so much for the offer. I'll bet someone else would just love you for starting one! Thanks, Gary! There's really not a lot to walk through yet, but when the whole yard looks like the rose garden, I hope people will really enjoy taking a stroll here! Well my DH wins the prize. He hasn't divorced me or threatened to take away my spade, yet. I don't know if all of you saw the photos that Jim (Idiothe) posted of Sheila and I with our kayaks and bikes and the car completely loaded with hostas? Well in order to do that we loaded all our gear in our boats. It is my hubby's car. (both our names are on it, but it is his vehicle 98% of the time.) I drive the used Mommy van that gets used as a truck for hauling mulch and whatever. But the kayak rack is mine, and I can't load boats on my van due to a bad shoulder. So..... he is very particular about his car. He hates me putting the rack on, he will not drive on gravel, etc. So with my bad shoulder, and the heavy boats, I couldn't lift my end of Sheil's up very well. So the J cradles kept twisting and falling down. I finally found a man to help us. We finally got it loaded, made it home... and there are dents all over the top of the car. Bad dents, like really big hail. :( Like will never come out. I feel awful, I do. Whats done is done, and he isn't holding it against me. But he is so sad. And I am too. But I did get all my hostas home! So he wins the hosta hubby of the year award. I need to get those trophies made, don't I? Anyone want to nominate their Wife for the Hosta Wife of the year award?

Thought some more about this overnight. My dad was a dentist. Also built his own dental office. Corian everywhere. I have health issues, including a couple of surgeries. When you go to the doctor, or the hospital, Corian everywhere. Until I read this thread, I never really thought about why. I worked in a hospital 40 years ago, if I recall correctly, stainless steel was the thing then. It's all about keeping things clean. We have hard water, as do most people in the USA. Did not realize that hard water affects stone. I have never cut directly on a countertop, it will ruin your knives. I have never put a hot pot on a countertop and have no desire to do so. We do put hot pots in the sink, pour boiling water in the sink, so I am going to need a steel or enamel sink. Want a farmhouse sink anyway. This has been a very thought provoking discussion. Learned a lot.

It's also on my list of things to do one day - see the gardens of France, especially Giverny.

I loved the photos that showed the scaffold across the gardens so the workers wouldn't be trodding on the soil as they planted. How ingenious!

Thank you for sharing these photos. In the rose garden, I'm very intrique by the topiaries. Do you know if those are yews or something else?

The iris walk is very pretty. Are those campanulas edging the walkway?

Also - thanks for the shots on the process. Often it's the process I'm interested in.

Thank you for sharing these Susan! It is so amazing how there are gardens all over the place. And they don't use the typical landscape plants that we do over here but intersting plants! Particularly like that picture of the roses on the houseboat. How cool is that!?

I'm so glad everyone is enjoying the photos. We had such a great time. I just loved Paris and I found the Pariseans to be quite nice and helpful. We even had a driver on the metro hold the train for us!

Ianna, I'm not sure if they were yews. You weren't allowed down a lot of the walkways at Monet's garden so I sucked in the iris photos. I'm not sure if it was campanula, but it would be a good guess.

Field trip anyone? The kids were so cute. There were many school classes and the kids all had booklets of all the plants currently in bloom. Their task was to explore the gardens and find each of the blooms.

The famous bridge. Most of the wisteria was going out of bloom but it was still beautiful. I can't believe I scored a picture with no one on the bridge!
