Tsuga canadensis:

"SEED: Cones ripen September and October of their first year. The brown cones should be harvested as son as they mature ot prevent losses due to the release of the winged seeds. Canadeian hemlock cones when collected green are difficult to open, but can be opened by exposure to repeated cycles of moistening followed by drying at 100F...Tsuga canadensis seeds may have low viability due to the difficulty of separating out poor seed.

Dormancy is variable in hemlock seed with some seed lots requiring cold stratification. Stratification accelerates and improves total germination and, unless seeds are known not to require pretreatment, sttratification at 33 to 41F for 1 to 4 months is recommended.

Hemlock seedlings are difficult to grow. They are easily damaged in hot sun, and their small size the first year makes them susceptible to frost heaving. In nursery practive T. canadensis is often spring sown after stratification. However, there is no difference in growth between fall and spring grown seed. Seeds germinated under laboratory conditions require 21 to 28 days cold stratification followed by artificial light and 68 to 86 F for 14 to 28 days."

"Juniperus: Invaluable needle evergreens displaying cosmopolitan personalities that allow them to survive where other landscape plants succumb. Most are dioecious or occasionally monoecious trees, shrubs, or ground covers that "flower" in spring with the berry-like cones ripening the first or second (occasionally third) season. Each cone contains 1 to 4, to 12 seeds. Collect ripened fruits in late fall or winter, clean by maceration, dry seeds and store in sealed containers under refrigeration."

I remember we had a bunch of very tall hemlocks in the backyard in Maine. One section of gutter on the garage always clogged up with stuff. There were always a few hemlock seedlings to be found growing on it!
