All in ground plants survived with 2 died, almost to ground inclusing pots buried to the rim. At least 30 other varieties in unattached & unheated garage survived. 7 unprotected in pots outside(not placed in ground) died.

In my attached garage and in 25+ gallon or bigger pots they all survived with garage temps going as low as 6 to 8 above zero.
If tree's were outside in my area it probably would have been much different as temps dropped to 24 or so below zero with some 18 below zero temps and strong winter winds this past winter.

Hardy Chicago doesn't mean it's really hardy. It will usually sprout back and bear figs the same year. It is usually reliable in cold climate therefore it was called hardy.
All figs have about the same hardiness. Damage is often determined by microclimate. Although you didn't have some of these figs protected, there was some type of wind breaker perhaps, such as a tree or a wall. Also were they planted facing the sun that kept them a bit warm?

bass, interesting phenom here - only the panache is planted in an area close to the house. the rest are all out in the open. And the Winter sun might have been part of my problem as some of my trees had limbs which were green on the north side and that dead brown on the south side. As things warmed up the green sides eventually also died.

That is interesting about your Hardy Chicago. HC has been the hardiest by far of my figs. This winter, unprotected figs all together in same microclimate were

Celeste-40% dead
Marseilles-70% dead
Brown Turkey-20% dead
Hardy Chicago-0% dead

The HC and Celeste both have brebas maturing now as well, something neither has ever had before. My HC did come from EL in 2004, so maybe its really Sal's? Whatever it is, it is definitely hardier than the others, and out-produces all the others combined. It has never had more than slight damage, even after the 2007 Easter freeze, which killed all others to the ground.

Here is my report,on a few of my figs including Hardy Chicago:
Hardy Chicago:30percent dead
Sal's (EL Gene strain):10 percent dead,at tips

Marseilles vs black:5% dead,at tips
These were the only ones, old enough to be left unprotected.
I also had various results on my younger figs that were winter protected the best I could ,because I am talking aboutanother 20 figs inground outside.
Most of them sustained more Damage than the 3 above.
