Rudbeckia goldsturm still inside?

Ok...I got my seed this winter, chilled them in the fridge until I sowed them in 3" peat pots in late March. I couldn't find my seed invoice to see when I got them, but I think they would've had 6 weeks in the fridge.

I've had them inside on the cupboard then on the windowsill since then, but they're not sprouting. Shouldn't they be by now? Maybe I didn't chill them properly? Or would I have done better just to throw them in the dirt outside and hope for the best? Or do they just take a long time?

I think they will be my first WS project...

Yah Toots, I'd say if they haven't come up by now there goners or stubborn.

Sure direct sowing will work too, but I think you better jump on the Winter Sowing bandwagon with all us crazies next year, you will get amazing results!

Don't throw your containers in the composter, dump in part of the garden with tag of course and keep an close eye on them, you never know, like I said they could be stubborn and surprise you later in the season or next spring ;)

Ya, I think I'll take your advice Sharon, and dump them in the garden somewhere. And I'll save the rest of my seed for WS! :^) I do love them!

Has anyone in Zone 0 to 2 had any luck with perennial Rudbeckias?

Wagonwheel - wow - love the image of 'Prairie Sun.' Thanks. I sowed both varieties from seed and had poor germination. Another weird spring too hot too cold not enough water, etc. I have a single 'Irish Eyes' I'm nursing and expect to plant soon. I've been debating where to put it! I've been very happy with the way the 'Cherry Brandy' looks in and among the other Rudbeckias I have which are common R. hirta and fulgida. I have R. triloba all over the place - self sown - and love it wherever it pops up - as for 'Prairie Sun' - there is something green in one of the containers so I'm hoping I have one. Funny how precious a single seedling can be when it's the only one. Dee - I have wondered about the perennial/annual listing of all the Rudbeckias, but here in zone 7b/8a they almost all overwinter in sort of a semi-evergreen rosette stage.

sounds like powdery mildew.. usually related to damp/humid nights with little or no air movement ... thats when mildews grow and exacerbated by water on the leaves in the evening ... making the leaves wet for dark ... do not water int eh evening.. unless you use a breaker to apply water on the soil only ... and once there.. its there for the season ... you can stop it.. but you arent going to make it go away .. full fall cleanup is requisite though i like rubeckia .. i wouldnt use chemicals to save them ... i recommend moving on to other things... or try moving them out to a full sun area ... where there might be a bit more air movement .... and look into applying baking soda instead of chemicals ... for PM ... google it ... ken

I have the straight R.fulgida rather then cultivar 'Golsturm' I've planted both at clients and Goldsturm I find has slightly larger flowers and has noticeably darker & larger foliage then the species. It's my feeling that this why they are a little less drought tolerant and more prone to diseases like botrytis. The leaves on the species are smaller and more slender which seems to make them less prone to rapid water loss. The flowers are a bit smaller but just as showy and you get an extra 2 - 4 weeks of bloom out of them (up to 8 weeks) rather then the standard 4 weeks from the 'Golsturm' and disease is rarely an issue. But they still have the same attraction for rabbits - lol.

UPDATE: I put two of these in my garden in May. I like them very much. They have performed as advertised i.e. compact and shorter than "Goldstrum" but still very floriferous. As well I have had no blackspot or any other leaf issues that I often experienced with "Goldsturm". Here is a picture of one of my LG taken this morning. It is now 1.5 feet by 1.5 feet. I am hoping that is doesnt get much bigger.

The only species that I have any luck overwintering as a perennial is R. hirta Gloriosa Daisy, this one also self-seeds like crazy making new babies each year.

Some winters are better than others for R. hirta ÂIndian SummerÂ. To my surprise many came back this year. Given that there is no guarantee of this one coming back every year, I therefore start 1 flat of ÂISÂ indoors just in case.

No signs of any of the 3 R. triloba's that I planted last year, I'm so disappointed because they were so beautiful last fall.

No luck with R. fulgida var. sullivantii 'Goldsturm' either ;(

Sharon my R. fulgida var. sullivantii 'Goldsturm' has now been through two winters no problem. I wonder why yours don't make it. I have it planted in a south facing bed and it's gorgeous every year. That's not good to hear about the R. triloba as I bought one this year. Maybe it will overwinter for me too?

Maybe I'll try the Gloriosa or Indian Summer for WS, too.

Syreeta, that gives me hope! How were yours started? Transplant, started indoors or direct seeded? Three years ago I did direct seed some Goldsturm and they came up the next year and bloomed the year after that, then never made it through the next winter.

I bought mine from a nursery in what was probably a 4" pot. I'll let you know next year about R. triloba. I do mulch my beds with leaves and straw that is at least 8" thick for the winter.

Nope, nothing special, they are very easy to start indoors, I usually start them around the 3rd week of April.
