pruning fig trees

Hello to all,

I have had a tree (don't know the type) for about ten years now. It had grown quite large and produced well and last year as I stood on a ladder to wrap it before winter, I decided that was the last time I wrap. This spring after uncovering I cut it from about 12 ft. to roughly 4 1/2 ft. Now as four weeks have passed the only growth I see is small shoots from out of the ground around the base. Have I done wrong by such a severe pruning? Should I have just let this majestic tree continue reaching upward? Where does one draw the line and should I continue to wrap for the winter as I have noticed some trees in my development that were not wrapped this winter. I am in central New Jersey. Thanks to all that may respond.
