If you could only have 5 types of figs

what would they be and if you have a why (as opposed to just wanting them), tell us. I've started my orchard with a planted in the wrong place Celeste, a brand new LSU purple, and I seem to want everything I see but know that is impractical, hence my question

Hi Grislad,

it would depend a lot on what climate i could have those 5 types of figs.

1) QUIETNESS Pros: tip hardiness, vigor, quartered flower form, petal count, heavy flower production and fragrance, and blackspot resistance. Cons: can ball up, very (too?) long laterals, 24"+, although they are strong, could hold petals longer but 100% heat proof blooms, no wilting or crisping. It's supposed to be a shrub, but I give it HT management. 2) SWEET FRAGRANCE Pros: large flowers, 5", that last, vigor, first to bloom in spring and last to bloom in fall, fast repeat, no bloom wilt or crisping. Cons: wrong name, little fragrance, winter protection a must, will black spot, I spray it. 3) LADY ASHE Pros: profuse blooms, high petal count, deep blooms, very long lasting, fragrant, excellent summer flower production 'til fall, tip hardy - no protection needed. Cons: will get black spot, more that you would expect in light of its other outstanding qualities. 4) JULIA CHILD Pros: vigor, heavy bloomer, no bloom crisping or wilting. Cons: black spots a little, average fragrance, winter protection needed here. 5) EVELYN Pros: high petal count, intense fragrance, large, exquisite bloom, slow to drop petals unlike so many Austins, blooming machine for me, unlike others' reports. Cons: weak, leggy stems, hanging, weak necked blooms, black spot prone, needs winter protection here.

Here is my list of favorites from my garden of about 250. I have several new ones that may join the list soon, but I decided to just list the tried and true. Most are very healthy, bloom a lot and are fragrant. ROUGE ROYALE- This Romantica blooms frequently with huge, fragrant, dark red blooms on strong stems. It is a consistent winner of the Decorative Rose class at shows. SCENTED MEMORY - This rose is very similar to the above, but is an apricot blend. It has huge scented blooms with an old-fashioned multi-petaled form. FIREFIGHTER - To me, this rose should get the Gamble Award for Fragrance. And, in addition to it's wonderful damask fragrance, it has beautiful, velvety dark red blooms. I have two, which in my garden means I love it! SPELLBOUND - This coral rose has exquisite form. It doesn't have much scent, but it is really beautiful. I have two of this one, too! TAHITIAN SUNSET - This is an amazing rose. It is huge in my garden (on fortuniana rootstock) and has huge yellow blend, scented blooms. ELLE - Elle is another constant bloomer with lovely pink blend blooms with a delicious scent. She is a feminine as her name. QUIETNESS - Another very feminine rose of a lovely pale pink and great scent. It is very healthy. NIMBUS - This mauve blend floribunda is has the loveliest color blooms - hard to describe. It has great scent, too. PRETTY LADY - The name says it all! This white and pink floribunda is constantly blooming and seems to be immune to blackspot. PASSIONATE KISSES - Another lovely floribunda in constant bloom with big candy pink blooms. BLACK CHERRY - This is my favorite floribunda. It truly never seems to stop putting out tons of dark red blooms and is extremly healthy. I have Preference, too, and it is very hard to tell the difference. Black Cherry is a little darker red. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE - Another matchless floribunda that blooms all the time with beautiful pink blooms with nice form. It is very healthy also. Whew! That was hard! I love a lot of others that people mentioned but decided to list the ones I really would grow if I could only have twelve. That actually could happen when I grow to old to take care of all the ones I have (That could happen any time!)

I have only begun to focus on hydrangeas in the past 14 months and my knowledge is somewhat limited. Being in zone 4b in VT is also a limiting factor because of the cold winters. I have seen some wonderful specimens of Annabelle and Pani's up here. But at this very moment in time, for me up here, I would have to say that ES have done very well and would be my #1 choice. They are also nearly labor free. I find that if you tinker with them abit in regard to acidity/manure/compost that you can nicely vary the intensity of the blues and purples. They seem to respond rather quickly to the tinkering in the early spring. That said, I am sure that in the future I will find other hydrangeas of interest which will do well up here. But, for now ES hold the spotlight.

Lucky, when I first started out and went beyond the lovely Optimaras I could buy in stores, my first five that I actually sent for were all purple/violet in color. It took me a long time to get over the purple thing! I am still not! My reasoning was that if I was going to go to all that trouble of plunking down hard cash and sending away, then it had to be the very strongest contenders. I just had to explore the purple category first! In fact, when I first heard the word standard, I mistakenly thought it referred to the color purple, not the size! I love the color purple, and it was so ingrained in me that wild violets in the garden and woods are always purple. My favorite color with pansies, also. It is sort of like asking me what color rose? Well, "roses are red and violets are blue ... " Anyway, it is a great marketing type of question that growers like Optimara must ask themselves all the time, because they always offer a basic collection, often, one purple, one pink and one white. Anne, It is nice that you were able to post photos of most of these on a recent thread about what is blooming now! Not sure if I have CrinkleBlue, will be adding it if I don't! In rereading Lucky's query, it sounds like you have narrowed this down to the ultimate basics, sort of a "back to basics" question. Diana and Karin, too, seem to go for the bare bones basic collection. A violet club friend of mine and myself often joke that when we first started collecting violets, we both had only the solid purple pansies! It took me forever to break the sound barrier, so to speak, and buy, oh my, a pink one! Then a wine-red one! That was it, I was totally content for many years with that color combo. Just for fun, my choices are based on extensive personal research of growing out several in each category. This is what I ended up with. For today, my one red would be a true red, (not a wine-red), (drum roll ... ) Stork's Pow Wow. It is a semi double pansy with a distinctive variegated leaf. My one light blue would be the Optimara Manitoba. This is a "back to basics" choice. It is a very early Optimara and a very pleasing, soothing color combo with a good growth habit. It gets big and makes me look like a great grower. My one light pink would be another Optimara, MyDelight. This is a new one. I really wanted a flower that looked like a rose. After growing out many fussy ones, such as Anne, among many others, Optimara developed one that met my need with MyDelight. I wouldn't bother with a white. Although I have several. I would keep a couple of deep or bright pinks like Beauty Goddess or Gentle May. But you must allow me several of the deep, bright blues and purples. That would be Optimara Maui, Lyon's Starry Night Blue, Lyon's Midnight Waves, and Lyon's Simpler Times. Not sure about the fifth blue yet as many are growing out. Several Ness contenders. Yes, I am very boring and basic, but these are the ones I reproduce and keep many duplicates because I also think I have done the research, so this is the basic collection everyone should have. Well, if you really shoved me against a wall, if I could have only one, that would have to be Starry Night or Maui. They are each classics and non-stop bloomers. Sorry, Midnight Waves! But, of course, this question made me go back to basics and scour the on line catalogues to see what basic purple or blue I am missing! As if, with 200 and some odd different ones, anything could possibly be "missing." Joanne

of course there are others also i would like to try to see how they do.

With my relatively limited fig experience, I know of only two I would have for sure--Black Mission and Kadota.

and there are also two that would never be on my list--white Genoa and California brown turkey.

After this season, I could let you know whether or not my Violette De Bordeaux and Panache Tiger would also be on that list. From all that I've read here, they probably will be.

Hi Grislad, I'm a newbe. I live in zone 6 I think my Peters Honey fig was the best thing I have ever tasted and it's green so you have a better chance of getting it since the birds or critters can't tell when it's ripe.I am buying mostly green, yellow or white figs so I get to eat them... I LOVE to EAT FIGS !!!!

I seen a post on here before of an Iraqi Fig, not sure of the type it is but it look great so that would be on my list. I would like any variety from Palestine. Black mission because I like the dried ones i've tried in the stores. I think one is called tiger stripe, it is yellow or green with stripes, because the look is cool. Lastly I would like to grow marseilles, just hear so much about it.

Are there any US sources for Coll de Dama or does it have to be imported? I can find most of the other outstanding figs but not this one. I currently have the Italian Honey Fig and plan on adding the Negronne this spring.

In USDA Zone 8, you are (almost) in fig-heaven!
(any beneficial fig-wasps there?)

ANY fig should grow with no winter protection there (bless you!).
Choose closed eye'd ones if you have any excessive rain
or bugs in your area.

You may also go the big (sized) fruiting figs...

Which ones are both most productive-and-sweet?

I'm in a hot zone 9 so results may vary. I lost the tags to all my early planted figs except for a few. As a result most of the ones producing I have no names for.

Of my named varieties these are my two favorites.

Violette De Bordeaux
Black Mission

I have most of the ones mentioned by others above but they are only rooted cuttings so I can't really comment.

iammarcus, Col de Dame cuttings are available from the UC Davis National Germplasm site. I got mine from the yearly Encanto Farms sale. Its supposed to be one of the best but mine has not fruited yet so I can't really attest to it.

Celeste you already have
LSU Purple you already have
Violette De Bordeaux.....excellent tasting and super productive. One of the best tasting figs. One of the best for all growing areas.
White Triana......consistently produces super sweet figs, productive, and long season. Does not drop figs and tolerates heavy rains and is bug resistant. Cold tolerant Absolutely excellent fruiting characteristics.

Any one of these......Hardy Chicago, Gino's, Dark Portuguese, Marseilles VS, GM #11, or Sal's (El). They are all good figs.

LSU Gold if you like them big, juicy, and sweet. It produces two crops per season. Does well in colder areas.

Hollier or amber pulp Golden Celeste....if you like them sweet.

or Black Mission if you have the room for a tree that wants to grow LARGE. Black Mission figs are in a class of their own. I love them.
