Rainy, rainy Sunday photos

This is so unfair. The forecast called for rain by afternoon, not before 7 a.m., and then again at 8:15. It really spoiled my morning plans for weeding, mulching and chopping. Here are a few that withstood two torrential downpours.

DESTINED TO SEE opened with triplets

WHEEL OF TIME

GILDED BY GRACE had its largest bloom so far. While the earlier ones were in the 4 inch range, this one is 5 inches or more.

Here's LORD OF THE WIND from yesterday. The thrips made the sepals a bit splotchy.

Seedling Redefined Design X Blue Eyed Bandit, also from yesterday.

Persian Shield - I just love the foliage on this plant and was lucky to find one again this year.

Goldilocks Rudbeckia - I used to grow this from seed before I became obsessed with daylilies. I was glad to find it in a container planting at KMart.

I'll end with the always lovely PATRICIA SNIDER MEMORIAL from this morning. She sure knows how to light up a flowerbed!

Destined to See and Lord of the Wind are my favorites - but man, that Persian Shield is awesome!

I know what you mean about the rain, Debra. We have had rain showers that weren't supposed to come in until this p.m. so I was running around trying to shield the camera as best I could and still get pictures which I will post shortly. Love all of these, especially the Destined To See Triplets. I really like that seedling and with the pic of Persian Shield underneath it seemed to really play off each other. PSM is wonderful, as always. Avedon

Thanks all! Donna, the rain was heavy but short and the sun is out today so not so bad. Jodi, I'll send a Ragtime your way as soon as it warms up a bit for ya. Gotta figure out which one is Benfica and send that one too - it'll need to bloom first due to that little issue with tags I had - lol. Jan, I think you're right! I looked up Susan and I think that's it - though mine for some reason never did fully open. Almost like it stays cupped. Pat, I honestly don't know what the palm is. I took it from my son a couple of years ago when he moved and didn't have a place for it. I hope he doesn't think he's getting it back! ;-) I don't have that book, but need to get it one of these days. It's true that Moonlight gets creamier - when it first opens it's very green streaked, then gets much more ivory as it ages. I bought the bulb to fill up one of the bags in the Yahoo co-op, and I'm so glad I did! Totally worth $7 ! I love a bulb that sends up leaves with scapes. The only other white I have is Christmas Gift, and this one is just so much more impressive. Dooli, thanks - I also had Vera from the co-op and it's different, bigger - I think Jan is right that it's Susan. Jen, thanks - I initially got started with bulbs to fill the pots. Thanks everyone. I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. The muffins were great. Brought them in to work with me to share so I wouldn't be tempted to eat the whole batch! Felix! Scones!!! That's what I should have made. sounds like a project for tonight. I have some blueberries to use up. Cindee, I don't know what passie this is. I got it a couple of years ago at HD but of course it was not marked. I'm thinking it is possibly alata caerulea. It has a very nice fragrance. Vigorous growth but manageable. I'm going to try to get some cuttings rooted. I haven't had the best luck with rooting things but I don't think I wait long enough before I give up. Going to try a little patience this time :) (Now I will have Guns and Roses playing in my head all day - lol! All we need is just a little patience ...... Patience... Ooh, oh, yeah) ~Betsy

@ Roselee, Yes, I can see the Milky Way and I have some favorite lightning bug sightings that were down right jaw dropping and other worldly.. I am remembering one because the person I saw it with , died this week. We were down on the banks of the Pedernales. we spent a sunset swimming under Ol'Glory, a immense cypress that survived the big floods of the 30's and 50"s. It must be in a sweet spot. The many roots of dead Cypress structures created glorious Rorschach structures in the glassy still waters. we cooked our meals and watched the stars come out and there were millions of them in the moonless night. then the millions of lightning bugs came out all over the undergrowth of the opposite bank down to the river. All were reflected in the glassy waters , stars, bugs, all together, just a vague dividing line between the changing dimensions. It went on for hours. WE slowly waded in till thigh deep in the stars and dove into the reflected lightning bugs and then floated on our backs looking up into the convergence of the sparkling trees and stars like fat bloated water bugs, arms outstretch still and quiet. . This supplanted the last amazing sighting of watching one of those amazing multi-level towering Texas storms sprouting a constant hair of lightning from its upper levels , snaking in the convolutions of green cloud, lighting up like glow worms and snakes in the clouds depths. Out of the lower levels, tree lightning snaked outwards for miles above our head,. and again millions of lightning bugs answering their brethren of the skies. Also an amazing sighting. They definitely rank among the memories that I treasure that have made me forget to close my gaping mouth. Amazing things can be encompassed by "Golly miss Molly" Thank you guys for making me delve into the memory banks.

Ouch! Weather is never fair, is it. It is always a pleasure a plant produces bigger blooms. Gilded by Grace is lovely. That seedling of yours is my favorite. I really like it. Beautiful blue eye.

I have got to get outside and do a little work myself. And it is supposed to rain today and tomorrow. Rats!

Beautiful daylily blooms. I love that Goldilocks Rudbeckia but that is just the most STUNNING picture of Persian Shield.

really like that cross.. light blue with lavender and a stripe of pink between them, very nice! and that reminds me I need to find some purple shield for my yard again this year. :)

Mnclerk and Rita - Persian Shield is wonderful for a part shade place.The first year I had it, I took cuttings and grew them inside over the winter under grow lights I gave my mother one of those, and she still has it. During the winter, she brings it inside to a sun room. The cuttings are very easy to root.

beautiful photos debra, love that seedling, its gorgeous. and like Goldilocks, tooI don't usually care for them flowers because the peddles droop on them, but, yours is a pretty one.
DESTINED TO SEE is my favorite one., they sure don't look like thay were in two thunder boomers. gorgeous,

Lord of the Wind is gorgeous, love the twisting. Really like the colors on that seedling too, such a nice combo with the light blue eye & slight edge. Dean has me looking at the stamens too, may be the photo but they look like they match :)

I always enjoy the rainy photos. I think Lord of the Wind is going to be spectacular -- love that form.

Beautiful seedling, too, with that pastel blue eye.

Nancy - I'm not sure about the stamen of the seedling. I'll take a look on the next one. The backs have blue tint in the photo, but I think they're probably off white or cream.

You were fortunate to get such good photo's. I went out early before church and got a few. Some weren't open yet and when I got home, the rains came..in buckets so everyone I didn't take a photo of, was beat to death.

Destined To See looks really good and Gilded By Grace is strutting. A 5" bloom is a really good one on her. As always, PSM does light things up and Lord Of The Wind is a favorite here. Ellie

Love your Blue Eyed Bandit cross! I had Persian Shield a couple of years ago and it never came back after winter...really pretty foliage though :)

The rain ruined my plans for planting today too. Although it didn't rain in the morning, it was pouring buckets by 2pm! Looks like I may be potting up some of the daylies in my garage that I was planning on planting today.
