Just for Fun...Back from Florida...

...and seeing all those incredible blooms...even water soaked, they looked pretty magnificent (not so much all the water logged and mud covered daylily folks...hehe)...

You know it takes me quite a while (seeing how I just finished the Houston pictures about a week before this year's convention in FL...), so I thought I'd start with some humor...

It is quite amazing how many babies pop up everywhere from trees to ground (in the concentrated area behind my house) I wonder why they only pop up in this area. It is quite different than the rest of the woods. It seems to be where the Scrub Oaks are the most dense. It kind of feels different than the rest of the woods. The Tillandsia Utriculata is an endangered species of brom. I must have thousands of them only in about three or four thousand square feet. Sorry the pic is bad, but check out how dense these babies are! These are growing just on the other side of my property line, notice the barbwire fence dividing the two lots. The property line divides the Brom Hammock somewhat, with about 90% on my side. But the cool Till with the red flower (I think Balbisiana), only grows in a very small colony on the other lot :( That's why I brought some over to my personal brom collection. I wonder if it would be okay to introduce some Balbisianas in the pedominantly Utriculata Brom Hammock?

So sorry for all of you Northwest Florida citrus growers. Last year we, here on the Texas coast had, what you are suffering. I was just on the interactive weather map looking over the temps and got that sickening feeling when tomorrow night forecast temps down south to Lakeland read mid to low twenties. If you cannot get electric power to your trees try to get water on the ground. There is a lot of heat in water. If your tree is small and can be covered, a garbage can of water placed under the cover will probably keep it from freezing one night. Refill with tap water tomorrow if it stays cold all day. As the water freezes, it gives off heat and helps hold the tree above the dreaded 23 deg F. Such a scheme works on temperate citrus like oranges and mandarines and grapefruit but tropicals like limes may not be warmed enough. Larry

Florida Figs, just some feedback

I'm in your general area and I've got three figs in pots. I think they are Celeste or Brown turkey. I've had them for three years and this year I had the best production ever. I put one in one of those small plastic wheelbarrows that don't work well (I drilled holes in the bottom first) They were outside for a while and I noticed a fig would almost be ripe and then disappear. I believe it was birds so I moved them into my pool cage and I've had quite a few figs ripen. ANother problem is too much rain so they are slightly under the roof so they don't get the tropical rains we get. I'll take pictures and show you my set up and maybe that will help. They are not mulched but planted in Miracle grow soil. Another problem may be that you are not fertilizing enough. As you know there is nothing in our soil/sand. YOu have to add everything..

Thanks for looking everyone! Bananatree94, Thanks for the IDs. You were definitely right on all those bird ID's and possibly the orchid ID too (I'm not sure since I dont know much about orchids!). Apparently Disney does protect their orchids, so they might have been given extra protection, but they were at least 25 feet above the ground, so I dont see how protection would be a very easy thing to accomplish! Someone ID'ed the Jubaea x Butia as a Syaragus x Butia, so it probably is just a very Butia looking Mule palm. Either way, its nice to see some palm hybrids on the property! Lzrddr, I think you might be right about that White Elephant Palm being potted. It does look like there is enough bare room underneath it for it to fit a pot. I did here that White Elephant Palms are somewhat frost tolerant and since the palm in this pic was in deep shade, its possible that it has not seen much of a frost even after last winters low temperature of 28F. Usually Orlando winters are above freezing, but they have not been so lucky with the past 2! Im sure that the Red Sealing Wax palm has to be potted up because even with heat, I dont see how they could survive last years Brutal winter. They can barely handle temperatures in the 40s! Jim, the plants definitely were one of my favorite about Disney! I was happy to see someone else taking pictures of plants so I didn't feel too alone, but plant lovers were definitely the minority! And I could definitely see why you thought the monkey's escaped, lol, the wire definitely looks like a telephone wire! -Alex

I'm enjoying your photos! Born To Run is so breathtaking, as is Fire Agate. You got some really nice ones. I bought Born To Run this year from a source that previously sent me great plants. But it's a real runt. I doubt that it will bloom this season. But your photos give me something to look forward to next year.

Oh My Gosh!!!! Yep, I've had my car looking like that, but not with so many expensive beauties as you acquired on your trip. How lucky you are to be able to go to the Nationals. I'd love to do that just once. You sure got some gorgeous dl's. I just adore Violet Becomes You.
I can't wait for you to get your other photos on your blog. I always feel like I went too, after one of your virtual tours. Thanks GG for giving me some smiles this morning.

Thanks, guys...after I put it up, I remembered I forgot to add Walter Kennedy....it was so fun buying daylilies at Floyd Cove...it felt like monopoly money...I only wish it was (grin).

Just to...hopefully...give you something to look forward to...these are the daylily gardens I visited: Peat/Thompson's new place, Dr. Ted Petit's garden, the Salters'...Ledgewood Gardens, Water Mill Garden, Frank Smith Daylilies, Art Gallery Gardens...Ladybug Daylilies, Kinnebrew Daylily Garden...Floyd Cove Nursery...Reilly Daylily Garden.

The last two, my camera was kaput from all the rain....however, never fear, I went back on Sunday (it was actually sunny) and took lots of pictures at Floyd Cove...

It should only take me...all year...hehe...to get them all up...but, hey, it'll give us something to pass the winter with!

Oh yeah...most of the plants I brought home in pots are putting up rebloom scapes (lucky Florida folks actually get this rebloom...every year...), so I'm hopeful that they'll rebloom with my daylilies...wouldn't that be nice!
