How do I get rid of mushrooms?
Comments (2)There is no reason to get rid of them usually. They are just a symptom of decaying organic matter in the soil and will be gone by themselves in no time. The exception would be honey fungus which destroys woody plants....See MoreGetting rid of lawn
Comments (21)Our state rebate was easy. Take a few photos and then do the project then submit new photos. It’s all online and we got our check about 6-8 weeks after completing our project and submitting the photos. The plant list includes all CA natives plus a bunch of low water non natives , so if you plan on native plants it is not an issue to “pick from the list”. As for sheet mulching and Bermuda grass - we were advised before doing the project that nothing really will ever free us from Bermuda grass especially since neighbors have it, too. The seeds are in the air so even stripping the soil to remove rhizomes only buys you time. It WILL be back! But we were also advised that sheet mulching with sufficient cardboard layers and mulch thickness would kill the existing grass and give our natives time to establish. We have had some bermuda reseed on top of the mulch, but we knew it was inevitable and try to keep on top of it, and our natives are doing great. We chose sheet mulching because it was cheap, easy, fast and a good way to improve soil and looks good. We are happy we went with this method....See MoreGetting rid of moss on front lawn
Comments (10)It does depend on the soil, moss, and whatnot. If the soil's rich and well-drained and grass wants to grow and spread, the moss is not going to be able to compete with it and will die in short order. In poor soils with bad drainage, the moss will never leave because it's perfectly happy there and the grass isn't. Moss killer doesn't make any sense either way, really. If it's going to die, it will. If it isn't going to die, it'll just come back again. Although, for a cheap moss killer, just spray iron or ammonium sulfate at about 4% solution on either one, it'll knock out moss with no problems. I use that more on my patio and oddball corners where I don't want moss hanging out than anything, though, and ignore any that shows up in the north-east bits of lawn. That stuff is just going to stay there no matter what I do anyway....See MoreDark Lawn Area - What is this and how do I get rid of it?
Comments (2)It seems to get still greener as it gets closer to the green cap just to the right of the yellow area (1st picture). Do you know what that green cap goes to? Could there be a low spot where it's greener? The tall grass circles in the last picture is "just" a grassy weed. I'm not up on northern lawn herbicides, so I'll let someone else help with that. You should not have to treat for grubs annually. Grubs are typically a problem in July and August, if they are going to be a problem. If you suspect you might have grubs, dig up one square foot of turf and inspect. If you see fewer than a dozen grubs, place the turf back and leave it alone. That is normal. If you have an uncountable mass of grubs, then you need to treat. But in a normal 10- year period you might have grubs once. Besides insecticides are really not good for the rest of the insects and microbes living in the soil. How are you watering? You seem to have done some reading on this forum, so you've probably read my thoughts on deep and infrequent watering....See Moremarciaz3 Tropical 3 Northwestern Ontario
