Can beans and peas be transplanted?

Since the weather has been so bad and the voles and rabbit have been around, I'm wondering.......

Can I can plant beans and peas in my warmest spot outside, which is usually for flowers, and then transplant them later when I've prepared their permanent home, wherever that may be?

Will they survive transplanting?

I was also thinking of starting lettuce in a large pot that can be dragged into the garage every day until the nights are warm enough.

I have this terrible feeling that if I don't start some things, it's going to be too late for anything to mature before the season (if we get one) is over !
