Show me your Mini's

My daughter, who is almost 16, decided she wants to try her hand at hybridizing mini's. I have a few mini's but not many. I'm going to put in a mini bed just for her to play around with and need some nice well preforming mini's for her to get started with.

Would mini's be about 2 or 3"? Siloams seem to do well for me
S. David Kirchoff, Merle Kent, Gumdrop & S. Virginia Henson is new, but doing well. Little Bumblebee doesn't seem to be listed with Tinkers so maybe it isn't a registered one, but I've seen it several places. Tiny flower but lots of impact.

Little Bumblebee is just 3 fans here, but looks like it is going to be a good one. It is taller than my others, I don't know if this is normal or due to the rain, but it is the smallest flower I have.

Bahama Butterscotch, simply tons of blooms, small blooms bu a larger plant so may not be what you are looking for

Little Show Stopper, cute little double

Siloam Double classic is great smaller one too. Two to Tango is a cute little double that does well. Frankly, all my small grow well & have tons of blooms. I prefer large flowers, but the small ones put on a great show.

I have only one mini that I can recommend and that is Siloam Double Classic. Sorry I don't have a photo, but I am sure other Forum members can post one. It's a real beauty, and the only one I grow that might be what you have in mind. However, I have seen a number of the Siloam mimi d.liies, and you would probably do just fine with them. Avedon

RemodelFla, my kitchen designer suggests first checking with your contractor or designer if you're using one and see if they can get a sample for you to have or borrow. There was a thread on this topic some months ago--see below. There are some good photos of niches. Our project is bogged down, but I have a few additional comments since I posted... Because we have to watch our pennies, I'm shopping in bargain places. One problem I have encountered is that oddball lots of tiles often don't include bullnose pieces as well as regular field tile sizes. The niche that we have roughed in will require some cute tricks to make ordinary tile edges seem attractive and classy; we don't want to just snip tiles and leave raw edges. DH, my sweaty equity, did not finish the niche smoothly when he created it in drywall because we knew we would cover it in tile. Now, we're thinking that we might not do the tiling right away and he'll have to pull out drywall tools and make a proper corner edging around the niche. This kind of "go back and do over" gig is getting very frustrating. [Meanwhile, I've found a smashingly exciting tile that of course only comes without trim pieces. It's sitting right next to me, thinking. Unfortunately it has a decidedly unfinished raw edge and will require tricky handling if we choose to use it. I just covered it over so I can't see it tempting me there on the table. Have to be more practical. ] Tile shops do carry a metal edging that can be used to finish off edges when no bullnose is available, but I haven't seen examples of it in actual use on a range niche. Would love to see a sample photo to reassure me. Also, remember that if you choose to work with a thick tile or a remnant of some kind of rock from countertop on the back of the niche, that will cut down the depth of the niche shelf. If you want the area above range/cooktop to be an artistic focal point, I humbly suggest that you either make a niche OR some kind of tile design but not both. If you choose too fancy a niche back, the items standing within the niche will compete with the tile design for viewer's attention. Mine will be a working kitchen, so we're planning to put oil bottles, vinegar bottles, salt shaker, etc. there and they are supposed to get top billing. Beth , peren and old_dirt, I have some of the same as you three do. Let me comment on ones I don’t have….. Beth, Bitsy Gold is a cute one. Looks especially good in a pot. I love the trio of minis in a pot as well. Peren, well….you just have soooo many! Some new ones I have purchased are ones I’ve seen in your garden. Sometimes I buy multiples and plant them together as well to make a bigger plant quicker…..lol I really like Cracker Crumbs, Crumb Cake and your row of 4 minis is cute. I love Teaspoon and Ladybug! old_dirt, your Mini Skirt looks great in that planter! I have seen Surfer Girl before, but in your garden it has a lovely light green shade. Also love Pocket Full of Sunshine….. I had one, but I believe it developed nematodes so I tossed it. I may have to give it another try! debra

To be registered as a miniature, a daylily must be UNDER 3" in diameter! Sometimes it is difficult to tell with those that are right about 3", but if it is 3", then it must be registered as a small flower. (Just as an FYI)

Thanks for the photos.. I have a couple Siloam's so maybe I will look into purchasing more of those for her. She just got Nano Second over the weekend. Tiniest daylily I've ever seen but was told the lady hadn't been able to set a pod or use the pollen from it. Sure is a cute little thing though lol

I have small gestures and dragon or dragons orb and they are adorable! I love the fact that your daughter has an interest in gardening, that is wonderful. We gave our fourth child the middle name of Gardner and he still hasn't forgiven us! Some day he might appreciate it.

I also have Eenie Allegro and it is a great one. Little Missy and Little Business are also nice. My smallest flowered daylily is Cricket, very cute, tiny, yellow flowers.

Thanks to everyone who has participated in this thread. I love the smalls and minis, so this is some great info for me.

Andrea, you are lucky to have a teenaged daughter who is interested in doing something like this. I think it is great that you are going to put in a bed of minis to support and encourage her.
