Morning all,

I am in Z5, just south of Chicago. I need to replace one DL that was lost. If money wasnt a problem, what is the one flower that you absolutely could not live without. I am seriously looking for suggestions here.

This one flower could be the show stopper in my dl bed.

I am tending to lean towards the looks of HBHMB, or Princess Diana. But as most say, growing EV's in the north is risky business at best.

So come on, throw your suggestions out here for me. Everything will be seriously considered.

HBHMB, is doing well in the North, and it came to my mind right away, before I even finished reading your post. I don't have it (YET), but I know of a few people in Michigan that have it and have said it has done well.

Hi - I'm new to the forum, and am delighted to find so many knowledgeable individuals willing to share. My husband and I have a Pachira (Money Tree) that we bought at Lowe's well over a year ago and it was about 2 feet tall and healthy-looking. As city-folk in Los Angeles, we put it on our balcony, in an alcove that still faces straight out, but is set back from the edge of balcony. It is partly sunny/partly shady -- seems to be a perfect spot. We named our Pachira (and call it by name) and it has been REMARKABLE -- growing to over 6 feet tall and lush and full. We have never done ANYthing to it, never repotted, etc. just water once a week and talk to it. Maybe it just loves sunny California and having a name, LOL!!! >>> about two weeks ago we had stormy Santa Ana winds, and even back in her alcove, our Pachira was tempest-tossed, and we heard her crash to the ground. NOT a good thing -- we have a table and chairs, and a tiny repotting bench that she managed to hurt herself on, on her way down. Of course, we set her aright, and soothed her, but we weren't sure what else to do. And then, about 2 days later, she began to drop leaves, and turn color--yellowish leaves at first, now turning brown and/or spotty. Not all leaves have turned yet, but a ton of them.We are thinking that we are going to have to be brutal and trim off the damaged parts, but we are also thinking it may be a good time to freshen her soil, since it has never been changed. On hand we only have the following two soils to use. MIRACLE-GRO Potting Mix (Tierra Para Macetas) with MICROMAX. and also MIRACLE-GROW Cactus, Palm & Citrus Potting Mix with a Fast-Draining Formula. We have no idea which -- if either -- of these would be good for her. And so we are "considering" mixing them half-and-half. Does anyone have any suggestions on: 1. SOIL 2. TRIMMING 3. ANYTHING else we can do to lessen her trauma, etc. Many, many thanks in advance. This is URGENT if anyone could possibly reply right away. Thank you so much.

Hrm, thanks for the replies :). Is the bow the wooden part of the plant? Here's another side view picture of the plant: So you would recommend cutting #4 and #5. They look pretty mature, so I might even be able to just put them in potting soil with some rooting hormones :)? The leaves just below cut #2 looks pretty bad as part of it turned brown and a couple leaves have already fallen off. My first picture doesn't show it, but #3 is also fairly large. Was the earlier point to just remove some leaves or remove all large leaves? How would the original plant grow again once the top of it has been cut off? I've never really seen any growth from it except it going upwards.

Hello Libbyliz, How about giving your Mom a $20.00 (or whatever value) piece of currency (I assume U.S. Dollar) for the next celebration for which you'd give her a gift. Paper clip/staple a note to it, or sticky note that says, "To be used only in ____________________ Store". Put it into an envelope with a card and give it to her. Perhaps she'll get the message - but if she asks what's going on, tell her that a gift card/certif. can be used in only one store, and that you prefer to shop where you please, not be dragged on a leash like a puppy, kicking and screaming, into a store that you seldom visit. It wouldn't be nice to return the next card, saying that you never shop there. You could suggest sometime, but I think that it'd be a bit discourteous, that you're thinking of putting her gift card in your yard sale, as you've had it kicking around for months and hadn't used it - you never go to that store. You could drop that line when she's helping you prepare for a yard sale - that would seem to me more genteel. Or - here's am idea ... ... get a piece of Canadian currency and give that to her. When she asks what on earth you gave that to her for, that she doesn't go to Canada! Tell her that you don't patronize the _______ store, that you received her gift card for, either - that Canada's justr a bit farther away, that's all. But that they do have some good stuff there, and sometimes bargains - and salespeople are courteous, helpful (well, most of the time). But that'd be pretty sarcastic - rolling her with a steamroller, so to speak. That should be enough to get me into the trouble that a dog hits when he doesn't get all of the way through the screen door before it closes - on his tail. Good wishes for a great week. ole joyful

But my choice is based entirely on photos. I would definitely have to see the DL in person before I spent big bucks.

What's your taste in color and form? You seem to like paler colors/pinks; are there others? Are you interested in hybridizing, or do you just want to enjoy the daylily for its beauty?

For the pale pink look that you seem to like, there's John Rice's WILLOW DEAN SMITH. A friend sent me an image of it in his own garden: I wish I'd bought that one!

If you like hot colors, there's John Rice's BASS GIBSON. It is stunning. For purple, there's STEVE MOLDOVAN. I believe both are currently sold out, but sooner or later, someone in the secondary market will sell a fan or two. (Note that STEVE MOLDOVAN isn't even out yet; people have ordered it for fall delivery.)

Since you are in zone 5, I suggest that you go to the web sites of various northern hybridizers first. This isn't to say you wouldn't find a beautiful, hardy daylily from a southern grower, but you increase the odds so much that a plant bought from a northern hybridizer will do very well for you. Try Curt Hanson (Crintonic Gardens), Karol Emmerich, who's in Minnesota (Springwood Garden), Roy Woodhall at Moldovan Garden, John Rice in Kentucky, Jamie Gossard and John Benz in Ohio....those are off the top of my head; I've probably left off so many names.

BTW, a daylily one could not live without needn't be the newest or the most expensive. One of my very favorites is Don Herr's JOLLY GOOD FELLOW. (Aha! Don Herr is in Lancaster, PA; check his web site.) JOLLY GOOD FELLOW isn't necessarily dirt cheap - I think Don H. lists it at $100. But I will never get rid of this one: described as burgundy lavender, it's small, true (around 4" I think), but I call it my blooming fool. I've never seen a daylily with so many branches and buds. Fertile, too. The color is just beautiful.

I really like Emmericks' "Moses in the Bullrushes"--dramatic eye and edge. She hybridizes in Minnesota which would be good for your area. Bob

This year I decided that my yard was too small to waste space on daylilies that are not excellent. The tree I added this year were Victorian Lace, J T Davis and Belle Cook. I have also been placed on a list for Mojave Morning.

Shores of Time and Artic Lace are on my "wait for lower prices" list. SOT has been out there for a few years and I don't remember ever hearing anything negative about it.

There is website called northern mecca (northernmecca.com). Many northern hybridizers are listed there. There is another website called DAYLILIES ON ICE with a few more northern hybridizers.
