HAVE: for Fay vicitimized gardeners

It looks like some of y'all are going to need lots of replacement plants. It may be a little early yet, but does anyone want to post what they need?

At least some of you will be in driving distance to the Swap-a-que, and personally, you're welcome to anything I have that I can figure out how to reproduce. No trade needed, you're going to have your hands full when this is finally over.

I'm sure there are others here who would like to help as well.

Feel free. I'm new here, so I'm trying to follow the rules, but it should be mentioned wherever the poor gardeners who got flooded will see it.

Hi Brandan Love your site; some really great stuff and awesome photos! I hope your flooding is freshwater from all the rain. If I remember right about the East Coast, isn't the St Lucie saltwater? We got Fay first over here on the West Coast, but my yard right in the Ten Thousand Islands bays was totally under saltwater. Take a look: Poor cannas! Bougies & Gingers don't like drowning in the bay! Another bouganvillea, some wind-whipped plumeria and one of my Tagami clumps that I thought sure was going to bloom soon And a shot showing my clerodendrum I got at Ricky's trade, my once-gorgeous canna bed and more heliconia. I didn't get to shoot any pictures of the actual flooding, since it was raining and blowing so hard (70 mhp) and it was kinda dark and dreary. I know that would've been more interesting that seeing a bunch of dead plants! I can't bear to take pics of all my hybrid hibiscus corpses, though. I had to pull out my 'maters, sweet taters and squash vines, along with begonias and dahlias and stuff like that. I think all the trees will come back, even though they are now nudies; the pink tab is a champ, though, and so far is still full of foliage. Anyways, keep us posted on how well your flooded garden fares in the next week as it dries out. Susie - P S.......nice shot of your 31" Snook. Got one of a 40 incher? I DO!

Of course, everything that's washed out of the ground needs to be put back and propped up, if necessary. And obviously broken branches can come off. But I recall that after the storms in 2004 the recommendations was to just leave everything for several days and be sure the wilted leaves, fronds, whatever were really dead. Just like after a freeze, there will be time to cut everything back that doesn't make it. Lots of what you think is in bad shape will come back very strong. I have a lime tree that's been out of the ground 3 times! I just keep putting it back in and it always comes back with huge crops of fruit. Kate

Aw, Ima thanks for the pictures, they are both so cute! My mom has a peach faced lovebird that someone gave her after they got "tired" of it. Her name is Sugar and she is a regular little clown. I have to say, she kind of has an attitude sometimes! How great that Popeye just chose you to come and live with, poor thing. So many birds that get lost do not make it, they get eaten by predators or die from exposure or starvation. I have an Amazon - and they have major attitude, and he LOVES to chomp on my plants. Actually, he loves to chomp on everything. He was a reject, a bird someone else didn't want. He's sort of mean, but loves me, so I tolerate his meanness. I have a little dog too, a chihuahua whose name is Oobi and he hates storms as well. I think little dogs are frightened easily, maybe more overwhelmed by anything big and scary. Thanks for sharing your pictures! I know someone from here who lives in Stuart, Florida and she said they had major rain and some flooding, but that is seems the storm wasn't that bad in her area, I believe she is a little north of the Fort Lauderdale area. As of later this afternoon she had not lost her power yet.

Virginia and points north are said to be overdo for a big one.No drought here and now enjoying the crystal blue 80-85 F. days. This is more continuous sunshine than we've had all summer and the palms must be lovin' it. Moving into autumn soon--my favorite season. I wouldn't worry about -1.5 inches, you can get that in a 15 minute thunderstorm. Last week when local tornado warnings went out (a rare event), rainfall was falling at a rate of 18"/hour! T.S. "Floyd" was last bad hurricane-related flood around here. As bad as it has been in Fl., the saving grace apparently is the level terrain and the sandy soil (excellent drainage).

And I guess, trying again to follow the rules, I should post what I actually have:

chenille
jasmine (I'm not sure of the variety, but it's the big one, with clustered flowers, 15 feet high and trying to get as wide, often used for a hedge.)
persian shield (never buy this, it roots so easily)
several crotons including a couple unusual ones
pride of barbados (as seeds, or in a couple months, I'll have babies)
wart fern
golden dewdrop
a bunch of differen and not very unusual heliconias
brom pups
rooted firebush babies
purple epidendrum orchids
firecracker (another never buy plant if you live anywhere near me.)
christmas palm seedlings
century plant pups
very common pink plumeria cuttings
a red mimosa that I'd need to air layer first, but I've done it once, so it can be done

all of this is purely amateur stuff, but if your entire yard got wiped out, I suspect it will be pretty expensive at the big boxes to replace even the amateur stuff. So let me know if any of this will help you fill in the holes. And if you've lost fancy stuff, I bet someone with it will be checking in. I hope you will post what you've lost.

None of what I have is worth the postage to mail except maybe the seeds. But I'm going to be at the swap in October ...

This is a very nice thing you are doing. Right now I am in the middle of Fay's visit. Hopefully my plants will still be here tomorrow. We are on higher ground than our neighbors, and live in the woods near a flood zone.

I agree, I am willing to help as well. Plants or whatever to help. I just have basic stuff but check my trade list for anything that interests you.

Anybody close (that can come pick up) that wants to do some trading I have some potted palms, gardenias, butterfly bushes and a few other things I moving out to replace with items that took the storm alittle better. I will have plenty for the swap in october if your not close enough now but I just cant put out the posage cost with needing to replace all my tarps and fix the mist house.

So heres what I have that I can help with or trade out: gardenias - miami supreme, august beauty ( cuttngs or trimmed plant)
tri-color asiatic jasmine
A few angels trumpet type unkown
Robelini (pygmy date)
Queen palm
A few basjoo bannana
butterfly bushes (different kinds)
Purple Mexican petunia cuttings (easy to root)

Would like to replace:
a few crotons that were smashed (any kind) mine were just small ones I bought at walmart i think
Could use a few blue porter weed to fill in a spot
Anybody have a rooted confederate rose (still deciding if mine will make it or not but going to try...
Lions tail mine WAS beautiful and then it was laying on the ground and flattened by a branch broken and dying (cut it back today at the ground and praying hard)
My mints are semi-missing flattened out and crushed (same branch as above)

I think thats inventory from today..

I will have lots of Plumeria cuttings for anyone who is interested. Sus, this is a fab idea, and very sweet of you! What kind of Brom pups do you have?? anything interesting?

My brom pups are pretty to me but I doubt any would be worth mailing. They were all given to me by various friends or bought at a big box when they were in bloom and then stuck out in the yard once they stopped.

I was figuring I could offer them to anyone who happened to be in Miami some weekend, or who might be at the swap in october.

(newbie, but okay with it :)
