Anyone in South Florida or Central Fla have any palm damage from Fay? Winds are near 65 mph with 75+ mph gusts in some areas. I have my big coconut palm that I planted in March tied down. Winds here at the moment are only about 50 mph so it shouldn't be any problem I hope.

Don't live in florida,but thought it was interesting to see a tropical system intensify as fay did over land.Not the usual scenario. It will be interesting to see what this storm does in the future as it appears to be headed for open water yet again.

Most palms can handle high winds well unless the ground gets so wet they tip. Winds were pretty mild here especially compared with Frances Jeanne and Wilma lol But WOW we had a lot of water . I always curse my pure sand yard until this happens Imagine 8 inches of rain on soil or clay??
Jim isn't it interesting that with all the advances in technology. Still not much better at predicting where they will go. or how they will behave.?? lol. You'd think with all that fancy equipment they could predict to a pinpoint lol

There is LOTS of 'Fay talk' on the Florida gardening forum. She's a very nasty girl, let me tell you! I'm in Brevard (near the Space Center and Cocoa Beach). We had +20" of rain in my back yard...it's like a lake; I fared LOTS better than so many in our county..this thing just stayed and stayed and stayed...dropped sooo much water...we have still several thousand without power and many, many are flooded...still no school here tomorrow...it's only sprinkles and a brisk wind now here, but a bit further up the coast, and moving across the state to the panhandle, they're getting pelted. Thank goodness, I pulled all of my potted brugs into protection under the patio and they will be okay. (I have ten in pots...this was a 'rooting' summer) The two in the ground...well, we'll see what happens...they've been in standing water for about two days. I hope you all are spared of any damages. Be well; stay safe and dry.

I've been following the Fay threads here for several days, knew from national news that she wasn't done Friday. We worry for your safety. The irony is that we have to wait until power is restored and you have a few minutes to spare from clean-up. Wish you were closer: I'd join TM with my little electric chainsaw. Oak is much sought after by folks who heat with wood stoves: know anyone who might help you out in exchange for a few logs? Glad to read DH's surgery went well. One of the challenges of recovery is overcoming boredom. And, when you're the care-giver, forgiving (in my experience) the little bell ringing for attention every 15 minutes. Best wishes! Ana

Hi All! I thought I'd check in from Cocoa, Brevard. It's after 4pm and we are still getting a bunch of wind and rain. So far no damage so I'm grateful. My fibromyalgia is going crazy, my kids are getting antsy and my dog's poor bladder is bulging because he hates to go out in the rain but other than that we have been very fortunate. My poor husband has been out in the weather all day since he's a police officer, but luckily the bad guys don't like to get wet either. We haven't lost power which I consider amazing. So I hope everyone is safe. Best of luck! Tammy Something I did today to kill some time: SCENE: -Tammy can't sleep. After taking another half of a sleeping pill she gets out of bed and opens the bedroom door. -As an after thought, Tammy slips into her sandals, so as not to bump her toes trekking through the house at 4am to get outside to the back porch to listen to the rain on the metal roof from TS Fay. -It's dark. -Tammy can't see, but it doesn't matter because Tammy knows her way around the house with her eyes closed. -Tammy reaches the back door and flips the light switch on the wall for the back porch light so that she can see the bugs that are just waiting behind enemy lines for Tammy to make one wrong move so that they can drag her into the night and chew on her flesh so that she is never seen or heard from again. -Before Tammy can open the door, she feels something with lots of tiny legs scurry across the top of her foot. -It's still dark. -Tammy has not opened the door yet. -She vigorously shakes her foot trying not to screech like a banchee and takes several steps back. -Nothing. -Tammy takes a step forward with her right foot. She hears and FEELS a sickening C-R-U-N-C-H under her right sandal. -Don't move. -It might have been a Froot Loop. -It might have been a cookie crumb. -It might have even been a piece of dried Play-Doh that was left on the rug over the weekend. -Please don't let it be a giant bug. -Tammy opens the door and lets the light from the back porch spill in. -What lies before her on the floor in a crushed pile of gooey bug guts and oddly colored slime, turns Tammy's stomach. -It was one of those giant flying cockroaches. -The ones that no one can get rid of. -The ones that would survive nuclear fallout. -The ones that live under your house, planning a coup de grace while you sleep. -THIS ONE never knew what hit him. -Which was good. -Tammy had ALMOST gone out with no shoes on. -Which was bad. Mind you, I don't garden in Florida (east central Mississippi), but if I were betting, here are some things I bet went wrong: My first bet is your watering schedule. Unless your soil is pure sand (Not, since you amended it.), your plants do not need to be watered every other day, and certainly not for 25 minutes at a time! You also mulched, which will help the soil retain moisture longer. In my area, an inch of water per WEEK is considered ideal. I know it's hotter there (Our high temps average in the low to mid nineties through the hottest part of the summer), but still, that sounds like way too much water to me. If you're in doubt, check with your local Agricultural Extension Service. They have pamphlets and such that will be helpful to you. 2. You don't say when you planted your garden. Typically, you want to plant once your nightly low temps are above 50 to 55 degrees. Here, that is in early to mid April, probably even earlier for you. In our area, most folks have harvested the majority of their garden by mid July. Once the hottest weather sets in, alot of plants (tomatoes, especially) will stop setting fruit. Depending on when you planted, this might be the trouble. 3. Miracle Grow (nor any other commercial fertilizer) should never be applied to plants that are already stressed and not thriving. Once a week is too often. Label directions say to apply Miracle Gro every two weeks, and honestly, that's still alot of fertilizer. If you add compost, manure, etc. to your soil each year before planting, you shouldn't need nearly that much fertilizer. The only way to know for sure is to have a soil test. And here's another possibility. 4. Why did you add lime? If you had a soil test and the test indicated that lime is needed that's one thing. But if you just added it, you may have done yourself in right there. Most vegetables like a neutral to slightly acid soil PH. If you over did it (or under did it) that could definitely explain your problems. Do not despair! Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a "born gardener". Knowledge is the key, and it's widely available. Read all winter. Look for and attend gardening classes and seminars. Ask questions. Get your soil tested. Visit your Ag Extension office. Take a Master Gardener Class. (You're a Master AFTER, not before you take it.) Try again!! And be grateful that your family won't go hungry while you're learning. :)

The eye wall came through Moore Haven and it was not good.We had about 10 to 12+ inches of rain is my guess.In some ways it was worse than Wilma and we have no power as of yet.
I have several palms that have to be straitened and a orange tree fallen to the ground. This storm was under estimated and if you were close to the eye especially the east side of it you would of had some damage to your plants.

Yea,its kind of strange that they say,well its not a hurricane,but near the eye with 65-75 mph gusts,well I have seen 50-60mph in thunderstorms and I would not want to see that last for a few hours!We get used to hearing 125 or 175 mph but when you get winds anywhere over 30mph thats pretty damn windy!I think they are getting better with some predictions,but one of the things about weather thats so "cool"is its unccertainty,as in the exact track of a hurricane.One thing that was interesting about the t/storms is how fast tornados can pop up from t/s in hurricanes,they can not be on the radar at all and in 5 minutes they pop up and in another 5 min they are gone,there was one county in florida(can't remember which) where they actually put out a warning and 5 min later a tornado did hit there!They need to watch those radars like a hawk!

Heard that Fay dumped 24" of rain in Melbourne. It should be passing to the south of me sometime tomorrow IF Fay sticks to the "protected" path. Not worried about it intensifying, winds have dropped to 25 - 45 mph inland but I might get a little rain.

Some reports say nearly 30 inches of rain has fallen in or around Melbourne - that I cannot even fathom. Here in Orange County we got maybe 3-4 inches since yesterday...plenty of rain by my standards. No wind damage either, all palms are fine, just some loose boots or a couple fronds knocked down...really was just palm self maintenance here.

This has been one weird storm. It never really had a chance to develop over the ocean, seemed to be a land lover (or at least a beach lover) in the Caribbean and now Florida. Got stronger over land in fact. Is/was expected to move NW but still holding steading and not going anywhere, anytime fast it seems. Part 2 (3?) of the saga may continue next week if it gets into the Gulf. Not exactly the textbook example so far.

We ended up getting 17 inches of rain. It is still raining off and on here but I can see the water has went down a little.

Here in Fort Pierce we got whooped with rain. The N. Fork of the St Lucie River burst the seems and has some neighborhoods 6ft under water. My property has a river running over it! And my house has all of my palms and plants a foot underwater.

Thanks for sharing guys! Kinda wish we had some of that rain up here. Were not in a drought anymore, but it still would be nice. Were now abuot -1.5" on the month so far.

Last times I can remember we got massive flooding from any Tropical Systems were Ivan, in either 04 or 05, which also brought tornadoes, and from Isabel in 2003, which hit here as a category 1. Lots of flooding from her too, but way more wind damage from her here.

Its been quite a while since we had a tropical system push through.

Virginia and points north are said to be overdo for a big one.No drought here and now enjoying the crystal blue 80-85 F. days. This is more continuous sunshine than we've had all summer and the palms must be lovin' it. Moving into autumn soon--my favorite season. I wouldn't worry about -1.5 inches, you can get that in a 15 minute thunderstorm. Last week when local tornado warnings went out (a rare event), rainfall was falling at a rate of 18"/hour! T.S. "Floyd" was last bad hurricane-related flood around here. As bad as it has been in Fl., the saving grace apparently is the level terrain and the sandy soil (excellent drainage).

nature is cruel. Up here in Se Michigan we've only had a trace of rain in a month. My lawn is like concrete. I've watered the garden (tomatoes and pepers) a couple of times a week. And of course I water the palms each evening when I get home. 42% humidity and 88 right now.

Funny story about Hurricanes ,typoons as they are called in the Pacific. A friend who lives on Guam was being threatened by two monsters . One with sustained winds of 165 other 155. Prediction was for both to collide directly over the island. I was sypathizing with him on the preparations necessary for the storms when both veered away and missed entirely.!!! Great news!!! So instead ma nature dished out a 4.5 earthquake lol.

talk about flooding, i feel ya, the rain was non-stop, and then once you think she was gone she just chilled some more. ugh. poor palm trees
