Western White Pine accidentally overwatered badly

I have a small pinus monticola (about 18" or 20") that was planted a couple months ago. I just discovered that the hose was left trickling nearby, probably for 14 or 15 hours. There was about 1" of water on one side of it.

Do you think that this one incident is enough to kill it?

doubt it.. unless you planted in a clay hole.. amended with peat .... that does not drain ...

how does your soil perk???

Probably not. I see monticola growing in seasonally saturated areas in the mountains here. Let it dry out. Call it a 'good, deep' watering

Thank you Fetters. Really good post. Quite timely for us as DH has suggested putting in a garden pond. My first question was, "What about the mosquitoes?" I was intrigued by the mention of Lemon Eucalyptus. E maculata sounded somewhat familiar so I assumed we call it something else down here. I googled it and this is what I found. E maculata is known as Spotted Gum or Honey Gum (good for bees). E citriodora is known as Lemon-Scented Gum. And there is a hybrid E maculata citriodora. Recently these particular gums have been reclassified from Eucalyptus to Corymbia (useful to know in case the nurseries change the labels). I debated whether to mention the next bit. In some areas they are getting a reputation as an invasive weed. It's hard to know when such a reputation is truly warranted. (I have some birch trees, which are most definately not indigenous to my area, and I do get seedlings coming up, but after all these years my birches haven't taken over the nearby bushland. Or is that because they have no chance against the Patterson's Curse, which was once an introduced garden flower.) I suppose all I can say is do some research if you're thinking of planting one. Perhaps conditions in the areas of the US where they are grown are such that they are happy enough to grow okay but not so happy that they get out of control. And the good news is if you change your mind after you've planted one, it apparently makes really good timber. Hello OzOrganic. Sorry to hear about your landlord issue. Well then, I sit corrected! ;) We've seen your plants....we know you have skills... This year, I accidentally "over-watered" my succulents....in that I left them outside (wasn't home to move them) when a rainstorm flashed through earlier this month. My Hummel's Sunset took a pounding: many leaves developed black edges and pits, and others yellowed and fell off. I pulled all of the leaves with black injuries, but it's a slow process while the leaves fill in. I can't wait to root-prune and re-pot this fall. I guess someone should also ask Danammeyer what sort of soil this Jade is grown in. If peat-based potting soil, the plant will either stay too wet or too dry. A good, fast- draining mix will help minimize the risk of over-watering. I've been using a mix of perlite, pine/fir bark, volcanic pumice, and crushed gravel (white quartz). The pumice holds a surprising amount of moisture, so I increase or decrease the ratio of pumice to affect the moisture retention of the mix. Josh

Great topic! My wife and I spent several days last summer getting granite rocks for our rock garden in the Crystal Basin area of the El Dorado National Forest here in Northern California. We saw these two large pines next to the road and am sure they are not the tallest in the area but than how do you measure height with no instruments? The first pic is a ponderosa with my 5'8" wife hugging. The next pic is a blurry pic of me at 6' high next to a sugar pine. These are very massive trees but am not sure how girth size at base relates to height. Pinetree30 is right on about our Forest Service being ignorant of what they have. When I ask questions about the trees they seem to have no clue what they have or where they're located. Maybe I didn't ask the right person or they're feeling budget cuts?

Brian: It would be nice, for tree lovers like us, to be able to get a variety of hybrid pines, but the problem is that there is no market for them that would re-pay the investment of setting up production. The one that may, at some point, be available, is loblolly X shortleaf. The idea behind this one is to develop a tree resistant to fusiform rust, which in some areas is a big problem with southern pines, including loblolly. I am not sure if there are others that will have a commercial market worth exploiting. Another factor is that there are regular pines that are very nice. One thing holding back pitlolly is eastern white pine, which is a flat out gorgeous tree, and which is very productive. It's wood, however is inferior to the southern pines, but it does find a ready market. If I didn't already have knock-dead gorgeous white pine groves, seeming to tower to heaven, at my timberland in far western MD, I might not be "messing" with loblolly, and pitlolly, so much. Northern growers also have red pine--not my favorite pine tree, but productive. The only genus that I know of where there is a great tree fancier's interest in hybrids, is the oaks. You can find all kinds of hybrids there, and I have been sampling some. But here's an idea: if there is something you really, really want--maybe the pitch X pond, you may be able to do a search and find out who, and at what university, has worked with it, and then give that person a call. Thanks for the replies. There is some clay in the soil but it seems to have drained quite quickly. Hopefully it's not pooling a few inches below the surface.

I'm not as worried as I was. It's not a mistake that I want to make a habit of though. :)

==>> take a hand trowel.. and find out ... why hope ... why guess ...

a small hole isnt that big a deal ... plus.. if it is soggy.. you can leave it open .. maybe it will dry it out down below ... if need be ...

many peeps.. put the hose away in early oct ... and then forget to keep their plants MOIST [not wet] late into fall ...

in my MI ... ground freeze isnt until ... usually.. mid dec ... and thats a long time for potential drought ...

its rare ... since days are cold.. and nights colder ... and any moisture in the soil .. usually lingers ...

the point being .... just check ... keep the trowel handy.. if your soil isnt friable enough to insert a finger ...

since your soil perks ... i wouldnt give this plant another thought .. in THIS REGARD ....

And farther South Ken, the ground rarely freezes at all, the whole winter. So yes, I water in January sometimes.

yeah DB ... but i am thinking utah is a bit more like MI rather than OK .... in winter ....

its weird.. but here in MI ... for the uninformed... the leaves turn colors in early oct.. you roll up the hoses ... so you can rake, etc ... and who cares about all those transplants for 6 to 8 weeks ... when it may or may not be moist in the soil ...

and then they say.. look what winter did to my transplants .... it killed them all ... no it didnt.. you did.. when you forgot to water it for 2 months.. and it went into winter bone dry ... perhaps this is a prelude to winter dessication .. eh????

and i am thinking.. when i first started.. i may have killed a few things..

one thing for sure.. i dont think jim will have to worry about it.. on this plant... i am sure the soil is moist.. deep down ... and without the heat of summer... it isnt going to dry down there.. until next july ....
