I live a bit north of Williamsburg in Washington, DC and there are many large figs of different kinds around the city that I have not seen killed by single digit temperatures in recent winters. There are several figs that are quite hardy here, including 'Brown Turkey', 'Celeste', and 'Magnolia'. I imagine any of these would grow even bigger in Williamsburg. Posting a picture is probably your best bet for an i.d.

I will be in Williamsburg for a week in May, one of the people I will be with used to be the president of the American Forestry Association. Perhaps he will know someone there who could give us an ID on your fig, if you could give me a location.....Elder

When ppl here talking about single digit temps does it mean from 0 to 9 or also to minus -9? I ask bcs none of my fig trees in containers never been killed when temps are anywhere from 0 to plus 9 celsius.

With US posters you can usually assume that temperatures are given in fahrenheit. I think the only problems with figs at 0° C would be if they're young and in active growth.

When ppl here say single digits they do mean above zero, but as Gene says, always in Fahrenheit. This is -17.7 to -12.7 CELSIUS which would be very bad for a potted fig.

Now I know where I was lost and confused, and then I thought Oh, I have such tough "cookies"=figs , since non of them died. Oh, better I be careful in this forums if I misinterpret temperatures in a wrong way my figs would be history.
I have to many figs in containers and I am expecting many figs this year- galore.

Duke of Gloucester St. is the main street in the colonial district. Walk toward the old capitol and most of the figs that I found are on the left side of the street behind various buildings, houses etc. There is a green that runs away from "D.O.G." street toward the Govenors Palace. The larger fig that I found is beind a house on one side of the green. I think I saw an even larger fig a couple years ago but I could not find it 2 days ago in the time that I had.

In your area what are some excellent figs that ripens before late november. Must be wonderful to be so close to Adraino's farm with so many options available. Here in BC fig varities are limited to common varities like desert king,peter's honey,latarulla,stella,brown turkey & negronne in almost all nurseries. I have plans to increase my collection & have got in touch with Adraino. Yr advise is appreciated.

Is this the famous VA tourist attraction place where there
is a somewhat of a small (old simulating & including
the old dress costumes) of the colonial a town in W.VA?
I have been there quite a looong time ago with my then
very young son. Just remember that it took ~8 hour
drive to get there from here form N.Central- NJ! I kept
asking: where is this place? and probably my then young
kid son was also asking the if 'are there yet' question.
Anyway my now 16 yr daughter was has never been there
(apart from possibly being a baby in a push chair).
Maybe this is good time to re-visit for my daughter's
education sake, (also for me to see them figs!).

Yes, gorgi this is the famous Colonial Williamsburg that I am talking about. Much is open to the public. They want you to buy a ticket to enter all the buildings etc. and this is probably the right thing to do if you are not going to be back again for years.
I have done all of that before living so close so I usually just walk around and visit the shops etc.
Some areas are private but they will be marked so.

I see no measures taken to protect figs. The older ones are planted in full sun but some of the new ones recently planted are under big trees, on the north side of buildings etc. The larger ones seem well taken care of.
There are probably many people taking care of the place?

Paully, sorry for being late, not here as often as I want to be. All my figs do ripe before late October probably because I take them out quite early, I took them already out from my cellar room and they at the back of the house under nylon tent, that' what I do every year.

I have Bifara and Natalina apparantly Humber Nursery in Ontario got them from Vancouver, very expensive.
They are very good to me:-)

Also, I have some yellow very sweet from Serbia (Yugoslavia) very prolific, I have some blue fig medium size, then I have a very large blue/black, then I have black mission, and my favour is Palestine fig- sweet dark blue/bronze/redish/black colour changes with weather and I guess moon too:-)

Since I have to many I never visited Adriano's place although it is very close to me 22 miles.

I received an email from the Coordinator of Garden Programs at Williamsburg, VA., and this is the info contained therein: the figs in the Williamsburg Historic District are probably either Celeste or Brown Turkey except for a Marseilles which is espaliered against the wall at the fruit garden of the Governor's Palace. The following gardens contain some very nice fig tree specimens: Bryan House, George Wythe, James Geddy, Benjamin Powell, and Elizabeth Carlos.
The above is a paraphrase of the info sent Apparently, because the two varieties are so similar, the garden people there don't make any distinction between them. From everything I have heard or read I would have guessed that they might possibly have some Brunswick figs (Magnolia), but that is purely a guess. I am NOT any kind of expert on the id of fig varieties, but will be in Williamsburg in two weeks, and will see if I can get any more info.
