Mike I used to see those cats during mid-summer so the timing is there and if there's one thing I've learned, is that anything is possible... as you know.

Sounds like pine webworms. I have found these on several of my pines over the last few years. Do a search for 'pine webworm' and find some pictures of their nests

It's pine webworm. The pic matches exactly. Now to find how to treat so I don't get them next year.

Well, I took the "nests" off with my hands and the hose and water. Nothing has climbed back onto the trees, but when I took the webs off, it didn't feel like there was anything in the nests.

The tree in the front yard that is being attacked is 5' tall and the one in the backyard is 3.5'. From what I have read on the Net it said that usually just seedlings are attacked.

Just about every branch on both trees had the webs on it so they were pretty covered. The tree in the front looks very thin due to the loss of so many needles.

It's funny, the critters just ate the older needles and not the newer needles, just like pine sawfly larva. I wonder what is it about the new needles that protects them from attack because I would think the new needles are much more tender than the old needles?
