I usually post photos in the gallery. But, the gallery doesn't seem to get the traffic that used to frequent there. So, I hope there are no objections to the following snaps. Hope you enjoy the tour. Liz

There hasn't been anything worth posting from my gardens of late. Things have come and gone so quickly this year due to extremely unusual high temps and the high humidity which has accompanied the temps has not been appreciated by anything. What happened to spring this year?

But now, the gardens are in high summer form. They are lush and full. However, I don't expect they'll be here very long.

Please excuse the hose in the next shot. DH was at the bottom of the hill watering recently (early spring) planted rhodies.

The edge of the woods where last year we cleared out all of the poison ivy, virginia creeper, and a multitude of various weeds. We now have in this area an assortment of rhodies, azaleas, and hostas, as well as this hydrangea which we transplanted last year from the area in front of where it is now located.

gorgeous beds! I like your new shade bed a lot, looks like a nice place for a garden bench to relax. Your beds have such a nice neat edge and I have to say there is not a weed in site in your lawn! what a beautiful place you have. :)

Wonbyherwits, judging from the photo you posted i would say you have a very keen eye as well. I think the trick for me is useing plants that do well in my conditions and understanding there growing habits and mature size. I think experience is the best teacher in my case. I have no special talents as a gardener other than a deep love of plants. I've been useing the same plants (10 yrs.) and understand what thay do. Thanks for your kind words. I googled herbaceus borders "images", there are a lot of inspirational border pics. This is the 1st year i've started back working on my borders. I took the last 7yrs building and understanding my antique and shrub rose collection. Its good to be home again. Perhaps we should start another thread discussing combination and heights etc.........mark

Hi Linaria, some of them have been sitting for more than 10 years in the same place without division or anything, still going strong. I have divided some, but in my experience it takes a long time for them to recover after being divided. I divided some which were attacked by slugs(or other monsters) in winter , and the middle of the crown/main roots were hollow, so I was forced to resque the surviving shoots. I have a very sandy soil, the worst rubbish imaginable, it is like water repelling or something. But some delphinum growers recommend mineral soils for them. I live in a "cold pocket" in Denmark Zone 7, the coastal areas are zone 8. But the nature of our winters here makes it impossible for me to grow plants from USA which are hardy from Zone 6 and above. This year was very dry, the first rain in July fell on the 31st(one day more and it would be the whole July without a drop of rain) with several heat waves. But only 1 plant got mildewed. The reputation of Delphiniums is very unfair and was caused by Pacific strains, which deteriorated in the course of time, eventually becoming biennials. The clones available on the market in Germany are propagated by cuttings taken in the early spring. I can see you're from Switzerland . There is a nursery in Austria , Sarastro Stauden, near the Swiss border. They have rather good selection of plants at the moment. You have also Staudengartnerei Gaissmayer in Germany http://www.pflanzenversand-gaissmayer.de/shop.php?sid=910100cfa9fb6f9b8ba73be6d3fd316d&mode=botanik_index&letter=D and Stauden Stade in Germany. You can also check von Zeppelin in Germany and Vasteplant in Belgium. The named clones I personally grow and can recommend are: Lanzentrager, Ouverture, Merlin, Sonnenwind, Jubelruf, Tempelgong, Waldenburg and Augenweide- all stormproof and long-lived. I also grew: Morgentau(died in winter), the flowers were too big on this one, too much resistance to wind. I disposed of Finsteraarhorn- big clumps are too floppy. Vierzehnheiligen is standing up nicely while young, old clumps are too tall and need staking. Elmfreude - beautiful but not standing well, I give it one more year to see if it improves. Of Bellandonna Hybrids I have been growing Picollo (very good) for more than 5 years and Volkerfrieden. Volkerfrieden is a very old clone which is described as "losing its vigor" but it is still acceptable here with me. Vasteplant in Belgium has a Delphi series, shorter and sturdy, the colours are matte on these ones. http://www.vasteplant.be/catalog/index.cfm?fuseaction=cat None of Magic Fountains and Pacific series plants heard the notion "longevity" here. Of Millenium double series: they all need staking no matter what the labels say. The florets are extremely heavy and flop even without rain and wind. Thanks for the responses everyone... To answer a question that a few have asked - I may have mentioned before that those garden borders were total woods ten years ago (we have three acres). As my husband and I cut the trees bordering the grass, I decided to start planting around the stumps. Little by little, the stumps rotted (actually there are almost none left by now) but more trees to cut :0( It was frustrating to see all the potential borders, but no money to buy plants, etc. I had tons of sedums and that's what I used for a few years - propagating them every year and cutting them in half every June... As I worked on the clay, I had dreams of hitting the lottery and buying tons of perennials/annual to fill the borders. I was hooked on gardening. Then.... six years later (I had accumulated some daylilies/stokes asters - lost a few other perennials here and there).. Trowelgal found me on Growing from Seed and directed me here. The rest is wintersowing history. I haven't bought a plant since then!! Yes - Mostly EVERYTHING is from seed. I have some shrubs, can easily propagate my spireas to make tons more shrubs - so this gardening project has not cost me a lot of money. As far as stress, lynn - I cheat. I take the pictures in the morning... 'nuff said :0) So, to answer the question - MOST everything is wintersown/spring sown I owe it all to this forum Carrie

Absolutely beautiful! What is growing in those sloping terraced beds with the landscaping timber? It's a very interesting and lovely effect.

Is that liatris in that middle bed? My gosh, all your flowerbeds are beautiful! That's a lot of property and flowers to take care of but evidently you both have green thumbs and enjoy the beauty you have created for yourselves as well as for others. Do you have any bee balm planted? So much to see in each bed. Thanks for sharing with us.

Thank you for posting these lovely pictures. I find your beds to be just beautiful and so inviting.

How did you ever get rid of poison ivy? I struggle with it because I am so allergic. I can touch it and come in, strip shower, it doesn't matter....I will break out and itch for day. How ever did you do it and replace it with that lovely planting. I am so impressed! Beautiful!

I always looks forward to your pictures! You have made such nice use of perennials and shrubs together and have such interesting borders.

In the first picture against the fence what is the green perennial(?) in the middle between the 2 purple shrubs?

You have a very creative eye for combinating colors and textures. I didn't see any garden phlox or coneflowers, did I miss them?

Thanks for your lovely comments. It makes it worth the effort even more when others have the opportunity to see it and express appreciation at the result.

For Lisa: I used 2 different types of sedum-kamtschaticum
(blooms yellow in spring) and spurium 'fuldaglut' (blooms pink in mid August). Both are excellent in this situation as ground cover. They are low growing and evergreen.

For Pippi: I have 'Cambridge Scarlet' and 'Blue Stocking' bee balms in various locations.

For Kay: We began removing the PI with multiple applications of Round Up. Hate using the stuff, but I am severely allergic to PI. That was followed by DH rototilling carefully so as for him to be able to remove large roots. After leveling the soil we laid heavy layers of soaking wet newspaper and finally followed with about 8" of shredded cedar mulch. Haven't seen any PI coming up (yet??).

For thymetodig: That would be Joe Pye weed between the 2 purple leaved sand cherries.

What a beautifully sculpted yard - I just love the tiers and the hydrangeas against the woods. Those purples in the daylilies are amazing! I have a purple with a pale throat called Swirling Waters that is reminiscent.

So gorgeous....and clearly loved. There is so much personality of the gardener(s in the creation. :)

Lovely gardens! They are so neat and tidy, I wish I was like you! Your daylilies are sumptuous, and the gaillardia is blooming its head off.

It looks like an interesting "radiating" pattern in the lower bed. Are those landscape timbers for the edging or something else? How do you keep the grass from crossing over?

Beautiful!! You have the perfect balance between shrubs/perenniels, with nice variances of textures of plants too! I definatly have to add some day lilies to my back butterfly gardens, thank you for sharing:)
