Recieved 1 of 3 types of figs via United States Postal Priority Mail in a Fedx box today.

rogue de bordeaux was not available on list but when i emailed Berni he said he would check later on he said he could send but oh well.

So out of 3 i recieved 1 the santa cruz dark and nice scions indeed.

UCD is a very precious resource.

I agree that UCD is a special place. No complaints but I to didn't receive an Ischia Blk nor an Adriatic but friends (Gorgi and Renee) are taking care of me.

Martin I don't have the cultivar's you didn't receive but hopefully someone can help you out.

1. I have usually gotten two but sometimes one sometimes three cuttings/scions/etc. I don't think you can get any more than a sample, they expect you to do the propagation if you need more. 2. Before the deadline :-) 3. It varies depending on the variety; March/April. 4. Only the Davis site uses a form, and you only order from them the varieties that are kept at Davis (figs, pomegranates, most stone fruits, etc). I have mixed genus on the same form to Davis. That's a good experiment, York Rose. An alternative baggie method a friend showed me is to use the Jiffy peat pots. If you get the tomato refills, they quickly plump to about 4 inches tall and the netting keeps the soil together. I also tried peat pots, but they are kind of fragile when wet and then you need to stuff in the damp soil. Speaking of soil, a seed starter mix with perlite (not vermiculite which will bog the soil) seems to work really well, I found some by Ferry-Morse at Lowe's (they also now have the peat pots). Before I only used a fine mulch and I think that was a bad no-no. You can fit two 3" peat pots or four tomato refills into a gallon Ziplock bag. He also mentioned about acid water working much better than alkaline as a friend of his up in northern Ca can simply put the slips in a jar of water and get roots pretty quickly. Since we have water hard enough to stand up a spoon, I played around with some pH sticks and vinegar to figure out how much to use to simply buffer the water to get it to just under neutral. It didn't take much vinegar at all to buffer a gallon of water. In my limited experience with this method, I am having a lot of fun. Out of 100 or so slips that have been in for a month now, I've only lost one so far. One other thing to be careful with the bags is not to have the leaves touch the side of the bag cuz that moisture will make them soggy and rot. I wound up taking most of the leaves off of my slips. In order to keep the bags upright, I had the idea to use bamboo bbq skewers but these got moldy so not a good idea. If you have a bunch of the bags in a plastic container they seem to keep themselves upright. Now that I'm having so much fun, I want to get around to looking for some Sterlite bins that are tall enough to use the pots without the bag, otoh, if I do that, I'll have to be careful to label each one instead of the bag. Oh, temps? For this experiment I've simply had them in the garage which stays about 50-ish even at night when it's cold. It will be interesting to see if my luck changes for the worse when it gets warmer.

Received mine yesterday as well. I ordered them 9 months ago hoping to get everything this year that they ran out of last year. Overall they are really nice cuttings. On most of them I was sent 3 of each type with the 2 I really wanted.. they sent one of each. Some of the cuttings are small but fat and healthy, some of the others are nearly 16 inches long. Received a bunch of grape vines and other stuff as well. I cant wait to go play in the greenhouse tomorrow!!

It's too late for this year. The deadline for UC Davis cuttings is December 1. Get your order in NOW for next year. You need a Fed EX number (free), but you need a credit card to link it to, so UC Davis can ship your cuttings at no cost to them. It's a bargain! You pay for shipping, but sticks don't weigh too much. I guess it depends on how many varieties you order. They sent me 3-5 of each, except for the one I was dying to have (Violet de Bordeaux). They only sent one sorry little cutting of that, but I cut it in 3 parts, and 2 are now showing leaves. They honored my entire order of 13 varieties of grape vines, 2 of olives, 2 of pomegranates, and 3 of figs aka Ficus Carica. They go to a lot of effort to send you these FREE cuttings. They cut nice straight cuttings, then they bundle them, label them, put them in plastic with damp paper towels, put them in a shipping box, print out the label, and send them to YOU! They do all that hard work for nothing. I am happy to pay for shipping! No complaints!! My big fear is that they will catch on, and start charging us :-( I'm not a fig tree collector (just a fig eater), so 3 varieties was plenty for me. I picked the 3 best tasting according to an article on their site, and I suppose that's the reason I only got one of sweet little Violet de Bordeaux! Demand!! I have already started my order for next year. My vineyard has most of my attention, so my order is just wine grape vines this year, and mostly root stock at that. I won't compete with you for figs! your so right they are a precious resource indeed.
I hope in my post i did not sound as if mad, perhaps a little down when open box but im very appreciative of the 1 i did recieve they look great and 1 should root.

Funny i was saying to myself if i see them rabbits this year come from next door somehow under the new chainlink fence im getting the scatter gun, i hope to have my feet aterwards if it come to that.
See out here we have a range thats very close and hear them so 1 more similar noise wont bother anyone especially nextdoor whose house i always watch for him as he leaves town frequently.
My poor large dog about 100 pounds came close to catching one but as it ducked under fence in the back of yard after a long run ole Butch ran smack into that wood fence we used to have and it knocked him to the ground but was just stunned somewhat.
So i hope my feet are still around next year!

Vinnie thanks for the thought, i have got lucky and will recieve the other 2 in near future and thats it for me.
Of course unless someone comes up with a type that grows money! But thats it i have no more room in my garage anymore until my move to a warmer climate.
Gorgi many thanks for the things you have done for me, if i ever get that money tree your first to recieve it.

Referring to the below link,
I did air-layer (mid-Feb) my very FMV sick Ischia Black.
Hopefully, a clean sucker may come up (per Herman's remark).
If things turn up right; I should get 3, but only need one;
sooo, you are welcome to any of my spare(s).
I know that you want IB to experiment with "freeing"
it from FMV for the benefit of all us.

RE your rabbit shooting story:
It kind of reminds me of Elmer (a funny cartoon
charachter - no offense intended).
He is always shotting him-the-Wabbit, but always invarably
misses; so be careful...

Gorgi, thanks for the consideration and look forward if and when you have success in getting a sucker. The one i have is almost gone now as the whole top started to dry up and shrivel i cut it down and its only about 2 inches tall but the root system still looks great just refuses to do anything so i let it sit to see with covered dome on it to hopefully further stop anymore drying. I was really hopeing to get some ucdavis cuttings to keep on trying.I might be getting one ischia black sticks from another country in future and keep my fingers crossed i can root it, the more i can get to work with though perhaps one day something i do will work . My intentions afterward would be to totally isolate to not get reinfected by any others and take many many cutting and propagate, who ever would want 1 would be welcome to it. After that i would not isolate the mother plant as an (ADULT) anymore and see how it fights if reinfected as an adult compared to a new rooted one but would always keep a seperate spare one just in case.Thats my goal. I have the time now although even though i dont think this will happen to quickly but im hardheaded in trying to make it work. Im sure this will take some years possibly at the least but i hope to stick around.
It did cross my mind to find a lab and send sticks of ischia black so they may do the invitro process which totally rids it of virus by extracing a healthy mersistem which has yet to be infected (its been proven)and i could have such a plant to work with but that im sure is way out of my budget.
Some may say and rightfully so why bother with all this problems of ischia type and move on, and i would respectfully say "i cant it bothers me to have not tried".
